Black Panther

$1 billion appears to be a question of when, not if, at this point with the second weekend US at $100 million. It should be at $400 million US on Monday.

$630-660 million appears to be the final projected haul in US depending on legs, but it depends partially on how big A Wrinkle in Time is.

Imagine saying 3 months ago that Black Panther would earn as much in the US as TLJ. Just crazy given original projections for TLJ were twice as high around $750 million while Black Panther was around $350-375 million.

At this point, it looks like Black Panther not only may match TLJ, but as long as it doesn't have a ridiculous drop off this weekend like TLJ did (which isn't like), Black Panther probably outperforms TLJ at both domestic and Worldwide box office.

Yeah, domestic appears to be certain but worldwide really depends on Japan and China.

Both are great Marvel markets, China especially is much better for Marvel than Star Wars, so there's a good chance there.

China's interesting because ethnic stories have been absolute gold the past few years like Coco as well as Bollywood movies. If Disney can combine the Marvel and unique ethnic story aspects in its China advertising, that could really take off there.

So Black Panther really can do anywhere from $50 million to $200 million in China depending on word of mouth. That's the market to watch, if China's above $150 million then Black Panther worldwide has a solid chance at matching or exceeding $1.33 billion (TLJ's global take).

China has a growing black population thanks to their investments in Africa with more interracial marriages etc. I think that bodes well for Black Panther using social stats. Japan on the other hand, I don't think it will do well as lately they have start becoming more ...colorist.

in addition, Chad Boseman is considered" most popular US actor in China"...

Might need to upgrade the potential domestic haul to $650-700 million...; the second weekend hold could be as high as $110 million. That would be the 2nd highest of all time and taking place in a non-holiday/summer situation makes it all the more stunning.

Unfortunately, Hollywood will go from representation to exploitation in a hot minute.

After the first Star Wars' success, how many bad Star Wars rip-offs did we get?

How many of those ripoffs stood the test of time? Good will out. Besides, no one in Star Wars had been criminally underrepresented.

thats because one is a sucky movie and the other is Black Panther

Black Panther has officially been nominated for three Golden Globe awards:

  • Best Picture - Drama
  • Best Original Song - All The Stars
  • Best Score - Ludwig Goransson
Golden Globes have always been popularity contests rather than a celebration of the art of film. This year is especially bad though.
