Over on the animation side, Blue Sky released the trailer for their upcoming film Ferdinand. (Based on the 1936 childrens book, The Story of Ferdinand.)

Now compared to Blue Sky's other works, this actually looks pretty decent. It's got a fairly nice voice cast with John Cena as the titular bull and supported by Kate McKinnon, Gina Rodriguez, Daveed Diggs, Gabriel Iglesias, Bobby Cannavale, David Tennant, Anthony Anderson, Flula Borg, Sally Phillips, Boris Kodjoe, Jerrod Carmichael, Raúl Esparza, Karla Martínez, and Miguel Ángel Silvestre. (A fairly diverse cast to say the least.)

Also, if the film turns out to be good then I hope it gets a good amount of money, since with Blue Sky there's a rather unsettling trend with their films. First you have to look at how much money their cash cow Ice Age has made...

Ice Age - $383 million
The Meltdown - $660 million
Dawn of the Dinosaurs - $886 million
Continental Drift - $877 million
Collision Course - $408 million

The highest grossing films they've made -other- then a Ice Age film is Rio, where the 1st made $484 million, and the 2nd $500 million.

Now for the kicker, here's the grosses of all the rest.

Robots - $260 million
Horton Hears a Who! - $297 million
Epic - $268 million
The Peanuts Movie - $246 million

Keeping in mind all of these amounts are worldwide grosses, not only has any non-Ice Age/Rio film grossed less then the first Ice Age, but all have grossed less then $300 million! That's probably a big reason why they've kept churning out Ice Age films, they're the only ones that really rake in a profit for them.

Since I'm not really a fan of the Rio films, I'd really like to see Blue Sky put out a good film that's also fairly profitable. Which brings up one major problem with Ferdinand, it's release date of December 15th...the exact same release date for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. One may think going the "counter programming" route can work, but not in this situation. What makes matters worse is there doesn't seem to be any releases currently scheduled the week before, and the week before that (First weekend of December) is a horror film so that would be perfect counter programming. That would be a better jumping point then trying to go alongside a juggernaut IP.

my daughter loves this book. Although I can't imagine a modern movie made out of it.
