If it wasn't for the fact that Jackson and Serkis are involved--my immediate reaction is "this is just them trying to rake in money".

But the fact that Jackson, even in a producer role; is helping Serkis out in whatever this vision of a Gollum story is--makes me genuinely interested to see where they go. If they're gonna place this in Media Res of Fellowship; and focus on Gollum as he is being hunted to be interrogated; that could be a genuinely interesting play (if the script is good).
