This reminds me of Disney also not paying Legacy Authors from Star Wars Books (that Disney still sells). Disney just really wants to rip off everyone

Disney is for sure just going to have a few years of things going meh.

No hype for the MCU, Star Wars feels like it's not gaining many new fans, the parks are making money but also aren't having as many people coming in and no real big projects tor draw most people back, and there are too many Disney films and most are over budget

At this point further action needs to be taken. I wonder how much longer it will be before we start to see ABC and ESPN get spun off. That will help a bit.

Kinda but even then they have to pay for Hulu now.....Money wise for a while they are screwed. I from day one was against the Fox deal and still think for what they paid wont be worth it for over 20 years for how it drained all the cash they had on hand

I understand that they wanted to beef up Disney+, but the timing happened at the worst possible moment.

Tbh, probably good for the industry that we now have definitive proof that the megafranchise strategy will only ever be temporary. You still gotta make something new eventually.

Can someone explain how ABC and ESPN would get spun off? Like, would networks buy IP’s related (Sports broadcasts, Sportscenter, Dancing With The Stars, Abbott Elementary… etc) or would these things be cancelled? ESPN shows so many sports so it’d have to go elsewhere.

Probably investment firms or something would scoop them up.

it's worth keeping in mind that, while this won't be the case forever, ESPN is still making Disney buckets of money. does any of that matter if there aren't new revenue streams to generate? probably not! I love late stage capitalism!

if ESPN was spun off, it would exist (I assume) the same way it did before disney bought it. the employees just won't get free theme park tickets and you'll see fewer trailer drops on monday night football.

Everything still would have a home on cable, ESPN+ would still exist, and the ABC content is actually iffy on whether Disney sells ABC Signature or just the network. If they sell ABC Signature, then the company can take any owned shows to streamers in order to sell the rights for a period of time.

Comcast bruised their ego by trying to buy Fox away from Disney, and then Disney overpaid. Now they're choking on that volume of debt for content they don't know how to monetize properly.

Meanwhile Comcast hamstrung its biggest competitor and got Sky, which is a profitable operation.

I think the writing on the wall at some point that ESPN will go direct to consumer, which will be a death knell for a lot of cable plans. However, the rights to sports are pricey so it's going to take time for them to price it as a premium offering because it is such a cash cow that no one is going to want to hurt by having cable customer passively have it and pay monthly in their package.

Then Disney brings back the guy who got caught in a trap....just for him to have to buy Hulu

Disney just is so screwed for year's because they have no leadership and seem to be losing good will from everyone the people that work there, guests at the park and most people ignore their films.
