They have a similar setup for the Seven Dwarves and Frozen AAs. They project the faces onto the AAs. It's not quite projection mapping, but it's a step in that direction.

What about seasonal Mickey? Halloween and Christmas seem like a no brainer.

That would be great, but I still remember when TSM was talking about changing out the games on the ride to make them seasonal (snowball toss for example) and aside from updates with new characters, nothing ever changed. I'd still love to see them do a seasonal overlay for this ride.

What if the AAs within the ride are 100% blank and are projected onto? Would that have any possibility of working out?

I imagine that is what they are going for. Either similar to the way they have been projecting faces (Frozen/Seven Dwarfs), or actual 3D mapping. With 3D mapping I can imagine a blank AA shaped like Mickey. He is projected to be in his red shorts costume, and through the power of projection and timely sound affects, he pulls his train conductor's costume over his red shorts. With the 3D mapping it'd look as if the AA changed clothes. So many things they could do with this.

^^^They did add TS3 characters to TSMM back in 2010, but that's the only change that the ride experience has ever seen. The change was done overnight.

And it was pointless and it was hard to even notice. Not worth the cost.

They should put some kind of giant Mickey icon out in front of the Chinese Theatre to advertise the ride.

They already do. Although time has hidden it even more.

The current rumor is that there will be no AA's as it stands, but, according to multiple insiders over Magic (MansionButler, Martin) there will still be plenty of practical effects and physical sets, making it feel as if you've stepped inside a cartoon. Not just majority screens like Ratatouille supposedly.

I think this attraction is going to spark a massive debate when it opens about what is classified as a screen and what is classified as an AA.

We'll see.

I see this attraction being massively popular, I think people more or less are going to have certain opinions about the ride simply because of what it's replacing. If this was a new build, there would be absolutely no debate I don't think.

Correct. I'd have little issue with it if it wasn't going to be replacing dozens of AAs and incredible set design.

The Paris ride has a bunch of physical stuff in the mix.

But a bunch, you mean physical sets? Because last time I checked Rat, it's like transformers. No animatronics or practical effects, full on screens with physical sets.

Because Disney is building 3 LPS (trackless) rides at the same time I don't want to make a straight up comparison to Transformers or Spider-Man, but i'll give a rundown of what to expect. Keep in mind all three of these rides should be what are considered E-tickets.

Ratatouille - This ride will be the tamest of the bunch and the ride with the least amount of practical effects, etc as @Alexshow stated above.

Mickey - This ride will be geared towards families, but it should also be a very fun ride with a longer than average length (7-8 minutes). It will utilize extensive projection mapping as we've talked about, but will also have practical effects and physical sets in play, really rounding out the ride.

Battle Escape - In the same park as Mickey, the First Order-themed Star Wars ride is aiming to be one of the most thrilling rides of it's kind that Disney has made. Simply put, they are trying to knock Spider-Man off his pedestal with this one. It should have everything Spidey does and will fully immerse you into an action packed battle against the First Order. This ride will use an elevator system very similar to Transformers to get to different levels of the building.

Jim Hill says part of the the reason the new ride will only utilize 2/3 of the show building is so eventually the rest can be removed and the space utilized for a future Star Wars expansion, around the third entrance area that DL is getting but we are not.

^This goes against what some people are parroting, which is that Runaway Railway will use the exact same layout and vehicles as GMR. Suffice to say... what?!

Those vehicles can not move quickly and would be a strange fit for a "runaway railway". In addition it's a different kind of trackless (no wi-fi) than what has been brought up. That's different than what I heard which is "imagine Mystic Manor without the AAs and 100% more projection mapping and physical effects".

Granted, if it was the former then I totally believe it'll be up by 2018, but I even doubt Disney will push for that. I could see holiday 2018 at best, with spring 2019 as the favorite.

I've been hearing for a long time that the ride would be using only a portion of the ride path, similar to what happened to Figment when it got it's first big update. All I have heard was the unused portion was going to "back of house." It makes sense that it might be utilized for more Star Wars land someday, if even just to be able to swallow up some of the existing back of house and use this new space as new BoH.

I have never heard that the old GMR vehicles were going to be used for this ride (from anyone outside of Twitter the last few days that is.) I'm still imagining trackless like Rat/MM/Hunny Hunt.

I'm still trying to figure out how many people this will have per vehicle. I just can't see the GMR vehicles being kept.

I highly doubt Disney reinvents the wheel on this one so I'm going to guess four to eight per vehicle.

And yeah, Alicia, that makes more sense and in-line with the little I've heard.

I'm honestly only expecting projection mapping on multi-demensioned surfaces....i.e. Cinderella's Castle projection becomes a whole ride

The GMR vehicles are being scrapped as is the current "trackless" floor. The only thing to remain in that building will be the surrounding walls.

Martin said just the other day that only 5-10% of the building will go unused and i'm inclined to believe him over Hill. I mean, Hill just got the scoop on the cut third Bantha ride. Mice Chat had that a year ago. A flipping YEAR!
