Thank you, triblorlfl. I vaguely remembered that story but forgot where I had read it. Either Universal was sneaky and snatched the rights away, or Disney dropped the project on their own account, due to JKR being a tad bit difficult to please. In the end, I'm happy how the way things have played out. But dammit, I wish Disney would have built that Incredibles ride! Stupid lawyers...

I just hope Universal Creative can eventually rise to the level of artistic sophistocation that WDI achieved in the pic below:

haha, blame this on Eisner man.
You know for a fact is not WDI
considering the new California Adventure.

Disneyhead you seen DisneySea right?
that 3 billion dollar park is just sick. (I go there every week, but of course not lucky like you, every week for Potter-land soon)

Just on DisneySea, I forgive WDI and blame all old DCA crap to Eisner only.

But there are many people who can't afford to go, no matter how much of a reason they have :) e.g. we were hoping to bring some of our friends some back from our trip. I wouldn't have minded it not having much of a head in the bottle-version.

Sorry, but I am going to run a business, buying the drink from the park, bottle it later, then sell it to the international fans over the internet.
Waha
(dudes, is just a joke, or have I waking the beast of business idea to everyone here!! haha)

According to a series of Jim Hill Media articles 3-7 years ago, Universal originally was going to (or did) approach JKR to bring the HP world to life in a stunt show, only to learn apparantly Disney had "wrapped up" the rights to the characters. That was apparantly in 2003 (when I was still an employee at IOA), and the Universal rights were awarded in 2007. The way the articles reflect the timeline, JKR was working with WDI quietly, but for quite a while and extensively. I honestly don't think she would have been working with Disney if all they were planning was a single ride, nor do I think Disney would have seriously considered locking up the licensing rights at the kind of $ it would have taken if they only planned a single ride out of it.

In the end, I believe Disney was planning either a "land" for HP, or a seperate theme park. According to Jim Hill, who has very reliable sources inside Disney and WDI in particular, the JKR/Disney deal died because of JKR's insistance on complete creative control, "particular ideas of what the experience would entail" (including entering through Diagon Alley and a train ride to Hogwarts) and the concern her "requests" would not yield a desirable ROI.

Universal ended up winning the rights, I believe, because they swooped in with a proposal where they might have been less grandiose in scope (because face it, while what they have done looks amazing, all we're talking about here is a few shops, a restaurants, facades and a new dark ride), but dedicated to faithfully recreating her world from the books and movies and ultimately giving her the final say over the entire project.

Disney was never going to give a crap about Potter anyways,
It is not their own Content.

JK was only smart enough knowing that Potter will never be bigger than the Mouse, at the mouse park. That was why Uni was the right choice.
But let say in a perfect world, where WDI dont work for the mouse, and they have unlimited budget (like DisneySea had)
Then I bet that Dream Potter-land will be the most awesome thing you ever see.

I'm kinda annoyed that there is pretty much no expansion room for TWWOHP :'(. I guess it doesn't have to be any bigger but theres so much more that could be done.

I am very happy with Universal being home to the WWoHP. I wrote this huge post about why it's better suited for Universal Resort rather than Disney World in my opinion, but it was really off topic... so I'll save you all the trouble :P

They could always expand into the parking lot behind DD..err I mean DC < Still a stupid name. Anyway, I will be at Universal from April 2nd - 8th and I'm hoping the April 9th Soft Opening rumor is true. I'll be mad since I only get to go once a year and I'll be so close to an opening. Ill be so close yet so far away if it isn't in softs :'( even though I hate Potter. I Haven't missed a year going since 2001 and I'm ready for something new!

I doubt the expansion will ever go into the parking lot.

If there is expansion, you know where it is.

The Sinbad theater part and its middle Eastern area right before the current Potter entrance.
That WHOLE area is a waste of crappy attractions and carnival games.

If there is expansion, move the hogsmead entrance all the way to where Mythos is, make Mythos right
in front of the potter entrance.

Then all the space from the alladin carnival games to the Sinbad Theater can be used for expansion space.

Which currently, in my dreams
are for the Shrieking Shack and a partial Hogwarts Express ride(which is just for you can go in and sit and not the prop we see now)

I really hope.
That Sinbad area is really just bad and waste that I really think no one cares about that area.
We only love things up to Mythos and thats it.

i think the most exciting part of this project is FJ..I like the Harry Potter stuff okay, but am mostly excited about a killer immersive dark ride experience. I think even if the show building was a big box i'd be happy as long as the attraction was above and beyond. That said i'm not sure how much further these dark rides will be able to go before becoming repetitive. Also they might not ever build something as expensive or massive as FJ or spiderman without being an established base character

What's the obsession with the Shrieking Shack? It's just an old building that rocks back and forth and creaks because it's so darn old. It's not even haunted, you know. All that is a rumor/lie that was started so people would not go near it while Lupin hid there when he turned into a werewolf.

It is great and yet a horrid compromise as they have defaced two islands perhaps. They are not finished yet so I will reserve judgement. If they can put JP back the way it was, I will be amazed.

I totally Agree and I sure hope they put JP back to the way it was...specially cover up the areas you can see Potter with trees. I really hope they bring back the electric fences and shrubs to make u feel like ur enclosed in the island. The also screwed up the JP skyline from the front of the park due to the dumb white FJ builing sticking up just above the trees! It ruins the look of JP!!!! and JP is my favorite movie and island! It sickens me!

I agree that the project as a whole has completely changed the original idea of the park (small themed lands that are basically their own theme parks and are separated completely from each other by forests, bridges, architecture), WWoHP is exactly the shot of adrenaline that IOA needed. Without this project, do you thunk we would be getting all these parkwide refurbs for the past few months? Once universal starts making a profit off this baby, you can only begin to imagine all of the new attractions and updates that both parks will accrue. So, while I feel that JP and lost continent are getting the short end of the stick at the moment, the benefits outweigh the losses.

They still have some room for growth. Originally a back "service area" was mentioned as being part of the land. You can see this area from DD, and its where some greenhouses, etc currently are.

Reminder:

The 10:00pm Eastern PotterCast is beginning as I post and if you care to watch/listen (which I somewhat recommend because this episode is solely devoted to WWOHP discussion) click on this link. It should be entertaining and enlightening as it includes a fan site which attended the detail reveal trip.

http://www.livestream.com/pottercast WATCH IT!!!!!!

Edit: THEY'VE ALREADY STARTED!!!!!! But also be patient, haha.

(I'm so overreacting but seriously, a person who ate the food and listened to Coup is talking NOW!!!!!!!)

AND THEY WILL POSSIBLY SHOW EXCLUSIVE FOOTAGE FROM THE REPORTER'S TRIP

Regarding the show buliding, I think they should try to draw attention away from it, not giving people another giant mountain, this time with no castle on top. People would say, "WTF!?" when they see that. Just add more trees like they've been doing and you're gold.

Also, I have full confindence that JP will be restored. Just some tall trees and the skyline is fixed.

Very true, I'm just very grateful that JK chose universal over Disney; she made a decision that will not only result in a fantastic new experience for all Harry potter AND theme park fans, but will also boost Universal Studios' resources completely. Now, I'm a huge Disney fan, and a huge chunk of my childhood memories come from the magic kingdom and epcot, but ET and Hannah barbera will stay with me forever. Disney would have made a great Harry potter ride, I have no doubt about that. But universal was more willing to concede to JK Rowling's wished and demands, which may at a glance seem like a bad thing, but in turn has given us this amazing gift.

I just finished reading all of those Jim hill articles posted earlier today, and I wad surprised to find out that mr. Hill believed that instead of Harry potter, a wizard of oz island wad heading to IOA. This made me think that if this project rumor was indeed true and actually came to fruition, this would be a very different thread right now!

The Chamber of Secrets

Isn't anyone else worried for the lack of news or mention regarding the Chamber of Secrets?? I mean we did see one of the snake props in a parking lot, but maybe they dropped the idea. I would be very disappointed, but nothing story wise or news wise points to its appearance in the ride.

And could anyone please provide a link for the FJ spoilers thread???
