I think if the Nintendo Switch is aiming for the Late May/Early June position that it is seemingly aiming to be at, I think it makes sense that they might've decided to "Flip" the choice of directs for this year.

I think if we're looking at it smartly, the Direct rollout for the year should look like this:

April 2nd - The Big One
Mid/Late April - Indie World
Mid June (Post NSW2 launch) - General Direct for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 titles
Late August - The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 Trailer Direct
September - General Direct for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 titles
October - Indie World
November - Final General Direct of the year

In-between that we should probably get "Mini-Directs" post the Big One that covers specific titles. Mario Kart 9, Metroid Prime 4 feel like good contenders for that.

Nintendo is potentially going at their own tempo—words spreading from Andy Robinson, Nate The Hate, PHbrazil and others of a potential direct this week. Some suggesting it for Thursday.

It’s not clear what kind of a direct it’d be—but it seems to be picking up steam.

It's probably the "Yeah Wind Waker/ Twilight Princess HD, Metroid 2+3 Remastered, and FE4 Remake exist" direct with like, a third party or two. I expect these all to be Switch (1) centered as the final hurrah, while maybe also announcing Metroid Prime 4 as the swan song?

Deltarune's probably the big thing for me--but outside of that I'd probably say Fire Emblem from First Party.

tbh I wonder if Bandai Namco might have the Xenosaga Trilogy. I think that might be a interesting shock.

I think there's a very good shot we could see the rumored remaster of Kirby Planet Robobot here.

There were also trademarks recently filed for "Plants vs Zombies: Reloaded" (allegedly a remake of the original game), and a new Katamari game called "Once Upon a Katamari", so there's a pretty good chance we will see those as 3rd party announcements during the direct.

I’d hope it’s a package otherwise I’d probably go with Twilight Princess since it’s the only one of the two I haven’t played.

Prime 4 looks soooooo good but I do still hope there’s a version for Switch 2 with improved graphics. Maybe there will be and that’s why we didn’t get a date today so as to not tip off the release date of the Switch 2?

Also, what the heck could be the “one more thing” if they already showed Prime 4?

The fact we didn't get a release date but we got nearly everything else makes me think they are holding off on the release date for the Nintendo Direct next week.

Big things this direct was amittedly a few things. One could argue the big thing is Sony IP's of Patapon & Everyone's Golf going third party (which feels big). Another could be the revivals of Rhythm Heaven and Tomodachi Life. Personally speaking I think the big thing is that they used this direct to talk about things that will likely be important for the Switch 2--that being the Virtual Game Cards + the new Nintendo social app.

In hindsight with the way social media is turning out; I think Nintendo's wanting to have a centralized place to allow themselves to stand out and to constantly allow themselves to update for people. To a point of where Nintendo Today feels like a logical conclusion so they can leave the social media spaces of X, Facebook, and Instagram as they can.

As for the Virtual Game Cards; I feel like there's a larger use for this with Nintendo Switch 2. Perhaps relating to the C Button that we haven't had full context of. Gut makes me wonder if this could be how they might be able to do TV casting for Handheld to TV's.
