[Full disclosure--I had my wedding at this venue, and while we paid, as the first wedding ever there we developed somewhat of a friendship with the owners. But FTR I was only comped a single beer at this particular event,]
Showcase of Citrus, the touristy orange grove-general store-monster-truck-ride attraction off 27 in Clermont, is trying a new nighttime Halloween event on the weekends this year, Nightmare Hours. For $20, you get unlimited runs through their (admittedly small) haunt and rides on their "haunted tram." Plus the bar, general store and playground all remain open, and their pumpkin patch is still set up.
The haunt definitely has that homemade feel, but still well decorated, and the young staff actually startled me twice, which is more than I can say of any HHN 33 house. The tram ride is a lot of fun--dark orange groves and cattle pastures are surprisingly spooky on their own, and there's about four actors who run right up to the tram. A bit hokey, but my friends' 8-year-olds were eating it up. Nothing too gory or adult, more or less family-friendly--even the 4-year-old rode the tram, tho she wasn't super-enthused while she was doing it. She did love nighttime swinging and climbing in the playground after.
The open-air bar features a very reasonably priced selection of craft beers plus unique local wines and slushie drinks, with a Halloween party soundtrack. It's a great place to just chill.
Definitely worth a visit if you have preteen kids on the west side of town, or just looking for an affordable few hours of Halloween fun.
Also, not Halloween-specific, but in the general store they have a locally made whipped honey and cinnamon spread that is one of the most delicious things I've ever put in my mouth. Do yourself a favor and buy a jar. Their salsas are good too.
