Thorpe Park are launching a new dark ride for next year, costing a rumoured £35 million, Merlin's largest ever spend at one of their parks. Not much is known into the theme, ride type or anything really, though usually we have plenty of people in the know, this project is really under wraps.

Last year we got some plans submitted to the local council showing us what the building will look like once complete.

It's great to see Thorpe getting a dark ride after endless coasters and flat rides. Arguably, the park grew far too quick under the Tussauds era causing too many large rides to reside in a small park size wise. But it did lead us to get 3 coasters in the space of 5 years with Saw only a few years after.

As for WC16, basically nothing is known. Rumours started with a Dynamic SFX, won't happen in that building. Simworx were rumoured since they do a lot with Merlin and have acquired Robocoaster, and Triotech now they're working closely with Legoland. Construction started in the late spring this year as we got our first clue.

Boards were saying this. For a long time, Merlin have been rumoured to get Doctor Who as an IP, this really helped fit that bill. But, the reminiscence of a London underground sign also sprung up.

Then ground work started.

Then we got a building slowly rising which led to a new marketing image.

This really sparked theories. Another idea for Merlin has been acclaimed illusionist Derren Brown. Working with the mind theme this really helped that idea. Anyway, FN came along and had some clues to this ride.

The parks new maze for 2015, Big Top, was littered with clues to the theme. The eye was part of the theming. The maze was based upon the Figaro Brothers, these deranged owners of a circus. Derren Brown is a patron of the Parrot Zoo in Skegness, one of which is called Figaro. It all started to bubble up, clues were everywhere, we were all cottoning on to it being Derren Brown. Derren Brown posted this on Twitter.

While Thorpe posted this.

We all knew what was coming. So this happened.

I'm not sure if many of you on here will be aware of him and his shows, but I love his showmanship and everything he does so this really pleased me! He is a genius of entertainment and as he is helping create the ride which has a huge budget for Merlin I have high hopes!

As for the theme, it's going to be Victorian we think. But also have a tube station. Probably Whitechapel tube station as that's the project name, Project Whitechapel or WC16. A reliable source has also said Merlin Studios have created a replica tube carriage. There was also a marketing stunt in London on the underground where two Victorian dolls walked around.

That's them.

As for the ride though we have no idea. The park is now closed until March and you can't get photos of the site from the surrounding areas as its hidden in the middle of the park. So we're all being kept in the dark. But the press release promises it will be a world first, and Derren thinks it will be the future of the industry.

From the press release.
Mike Vallis, Divisional Director of THORPE PARK Resort commented: ‘We started our search for the next era of thrill three years ago, and decided psychology would be an interesting avenue to explore, so we approached Derren Brown to work with us to create something truly exciting.’

We are delighted to be partnering with Derren Brown to announce the first details of what promises to be the single most exciting launch event of 2016. The creative concept comes entirely from Derren and we have spent the best part of three years working closely with him to bring his unique vision to life. This is our biggest investment to date and over 1,000 members of our creative team and external specialists will be working on the ground to bring the new experience to life. The attraction will be a world first; as such we have invested heavily in next generation cutting edge technology that will quite simply ‘derail people’s minds’ in a way which has never been seen before. This truly is the world’s first ‘smart’ theme park attraction, paving the future for the leisure industry – it is not what you would expect a theme park to deliver.’

Derren Brown, comments: ‘The process of creating this new experience has been the most challenging of my career - so much so that it has taken us three years to get the project on track. Now we are actually in production, excitement is mounting and we are making the final tweaks to an idea I have wanted to release for some time. As always, you can look forward to a heady mix of magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship. We are keeping the full details under wraps but I can say that the attraction will take you on a journey like no other, an attraction where no one will have quite the same experience and where the guests will be unable to make the distinction between what is real or imagined!’

“This opportunity with THORPE PARK Resort has enabled me to create a unique Derren Brown experience, for many to enjoy. It takes everything I love from Victoriana to mystery and illusion and wraps it up into a mind blowing journey.”

Exciting times for Thorpe! Lets just not mention I'm A Celebrity the maze attraction thing or Angry Birds Land...

He's an illusionist over here in the UK. He's very well known with many live theatre shows, most known is Svengali. What is best though is his persona on stage. Such a character that could be used so well in a dark ride!

It would be nice if Merlin could make a new ride in the UK that didn't have a dark/horror theme to it for a change.

They must have done some half arsed research that pointed them in that direction!

The VR on this is different, the HTC stuff includes front facing cameras as well so their is even more potential with that. VR also only plays part once for at max 4 minutes on the whole 13 minute attraction. It is a combination of many experiences into a grander attraction. Derren Brown has worked on every aspect of it, it is hugely exciting! For £40 million as well we are in for a treat, it has the potential to change how theme park attractions are viewed. There is a transit system for part of it, live action, mazes, two possible endings depending on the options you make.

There are lots of elements to this ride, most won't be disclosed until people post reviews all to keep the experience a secret and for it to work better. This train element they're so heavily advertising is one section. There's a lot going on. And will be a lot of surprises.

So this has finally opened after 2 months of delays. And wow. It's not what I was originally told. Going to spoiler it just to be safe, they're only light spoilers though. Nothing about the story.

The preshow is good. Think of Disaster and projection. Just, this is Derren Brown. The hanging train looks good but not amazing. The inside of the vehicle is good. Shame you never really get to admire it as you wear headsets for most of it. Headsets play a much larger role than what I was originally told. More like 10 minutes of the 13. There are no mazes, the live action sequence is predictable and shouty. The VR is very game like. It's like a really tame simulator. The transit system is slow, and although I'm being told very very clever, I don't care because it doesn't feel like that on ride. It could simply have been an evolution to Simworx's immersive tunnel system but no, it's brand new. Intamin did the controls of the Simworx system that was built. It's just poor. Cheap scare tactics that wear off in seconds. Ambitious, but like a pimped out very of Nemesis Sub Terra with VR but no thrilling drop element. Shop is cool though. And Disney and Universal were on site looking at the ride system probably to get Dynamics to make one that they fully utilise. #disappointed
