In conjunction with The Walt Disney Company and Miral--Disney is coming to Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

The Walt Disney Company and Miral, Abu Dhabi’s leading creator of immersive destinations and experiences, announced an agreement to create a landmark Disney theme park resort in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The waterfront resort will be located on Yas Island, a world-class destination for entertainment and leisure, connecting travelers from the Middle East and Africa, India, Asia, Europe, and beyond. This seventh Disney theme park resort will combine Disney’s iconic stories, characters and attractions with Abu Dhabi’s vibrant culture, stunning shorelines, and breathtaking architecture.

“Abu Dhabi is a place where heritage meets innovation, where we preserve our past while designing the future,” His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman at Miral, said. “The collaboration between Abu Dhabi and Disney demonstrates the remarkable results of combining visionary leadership and creative excellence. What we are creating with Disney in Abu Dhabi is a whole new world of imagination — an experience that will inspire generations across the region and the world, creating magical moments and memories that families will treasure forever. Through the development of unique attractions and experiences, Abu Dhabi continues to be a destination of choice for the world.”

The new resort will be fully developed and built by Miral. Disney and its legendary Imagineers will lead creative design and operational oversight to provide a world-class experience. Miral, which has developed a number of family entertainment destinations on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi in collaboration with American and European brands, will operate the resort.

“This is a thrilling moment for our company as we announce plans to build an exciting Disney theme park resort in Abu Dhabi, whose culture is rich with an appreciation of the arts and creativity,” said Robert A. Iger, Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “As our seventh theme park destination, it will rise from this land in spectacular fashion, blending contemporary architecture with cutting edge technology to offer guests deeply immersive entertainment experiences in unique and modern ways. Disneyland Abu Dhabi will be authentically Disney and distinctly Emirati – an oasis of extraordinary Disney entertainment at this crossroads of the world that will bring to life our timeless characters and stories in many new ways and will become a source of joy and inspiration for the people of this vast region to enjoy for generations to come.”

The UAE is located within a four-hour flight of one-third of the world’s population, making it a significant gateway for tourism. The UAE is home to the largest global airline hub in the world, with 120 million passengers traveling through Abu Dhabi and Dubai each year.

“This groundbreaking resort destination represents a new frontier in theme park development,” said Josh D’Amaro, Chairman, Disney Experiences. “Our resort in Abu Dhabi will be the most advanced and interactive destination in our portfolio. The location of our park is incredibly unique – anchored by a beautiful waterfront – which will allow us to tell our stories in completely new ways. This project will reach guests in a whole new part of the world, welcoming more families to experience Disney than ever before. Ultimately, it will be a celebration of what’s possible when creativity and progress come together.”

“Bringing a Disney theme park resort to Yas Island marks a historic milestone in our journey to further advance the island’s position as a global destination for exceptional entertainment and leisure,” said Mohamed Abdalla Al Zaabi, Group CEO, Miral. “Together, we are creating a place of boundless innovation, where the vision of our leadership continues to inspire the world.” The development of unique experiences will support sustained economic growth in Abu Dhabi and beyond.

Upon completion, the new theme park resort will offer signature Disney entertainment, themed accommodations, unique dining and retail experiences, and storytelling in a way that celebrates both the heritage of Disney and the futuristic and cultural essence of Abu Dhabi.

And to be honest—I concur with this quite a bit. It feels like a long time coming that either Disney would enter the ring, or that Universal would step back in. But at that same time; I don’t feel like I’d want to go into a place that I don’t feel like I’d actually be safe in.

I’m curious to see the end result, if only to see a modern ground-up park with the funding on the level of a OLC.

Yes, exactly! I'm sure it will be stunning (quote John Hammond, spare no expense) but...I'm not sure I'll ever see it.

We're firmly in the "major companies selling out to oil rich anti-human rights desert countries" era so I'm not surprised by this. I'm sure it's going to be an insane park (that will definitely get built since Disney isn't the one footing the bill), but I'll never see it in person LOL

Is this the major announcement insiders were hinting at to take the news off of Epic?

If it is, I don't think this is the answer.

Announcing an international park (in a socially controversal region) that likely won't open for eight-ten years isn't the counter-programing Disney may otherwise want it to be.

If anything, this is a response to Universal Great Britain, but even that feels more advanced than this does.

America is so popular right now, I’m sure a Disney park in the Middle East won’t be a target <sarcasm>

Disney when designing/building a theme park internationally, will look for areas that make sense economically, not just population density. So while India has a large population size, there are concerns about how a park/resort economically can work there.

I had the same question about China, but it's easy to justify a resort there when the country/Chinese businesses are footing a significant percentage of the bill.

With Abu Dhabi being financed completely by a 3rd party, with experience and attention to high-quality offerings, it's a no-brainer for Disney to approve.

With the addition of Disney, Yas Island will easily become the 2nd best theme park destination/city in the world.

So many thoughts

1) Like most the parks in this area, it will be amazing
2) I'm American and know especially now we suck but this area is at another level, you can't kiss and even hand holding is not really looked upon as something you should do in public......so yeah
3) Just insane this is Disney answer to Universal....like Universal is going to Texas, UK and Vegas....and this is your answer?
4) The real good I can see from this park is them making tech with the oil money and us in other parks getting the tech one day

Anyway it will be cool to see but I doubt I'll go there, I mean maybe by my self if it makes sense but I just can't see me bringing my wife to this area

It's a licensing agreement like Japan. There's really no financial risk to Disney. It's a plus plus profit move for them. They'll overprice their Imagineer fees, like they do to even their own parks. Plus licensing fees. Very profitable for Disney.

On one hand, I do not believe there can be such a thing as a good nation state. The politics and policies of a government do not necessarily reflect that of its people, and I really don’t know how you comparison shop those politics. France and Japan have a lot of, ah, cultural proclivities that I strongly disagree with — and yes, certainly I have little good to say about the United States in this regard.

So while I am also not a fan of many of the social values that define a conservative society like Abu Dhabi (and I’m certainly not of the mind that those values are above reproach) I’m also not sure I think those values make it completely unsuitable for a theme park like this.

I certainly won’t begrudge anyone who decides to not visit out of concern for their safety or general comfort. And I’m not going to cheerlead this project. But, to me, this is simply the end game of an insanely financialized global system where the profit motive has beaten every other motive into a bloody pulp.

This is not Disney's answer to Epic, this is Disney's answer to their own success of international guests asking for a Disney theme park closer to home.

Disney's answer to Epic is local with projects at DAK, DHS and MK (we're getting an Epic Universe number of experiences here FYI - 4 new E-tickets, 1 E-ticket retheme, and a collection of smaller experiences... and this doesn't include anything else in the works for the 2nd half of their "turbocharging").

India doesn't have as large a wealth base to dip into, it's also set to be more ravaged by climate change than the UAE so if you're building out a 20+ year investment you need to take that into account.
