the bugs think the yeti is a giant dead animal carcass due to its long period of immobilization, so they laid thousands of eggs inside it and now they are hatching...

Edit: never mind, Skip beat me to it... lol

Looks like some sort of attempt to keep something else from falling apart.

Good explanation! I will bet that is it what it was. Why that system failed is beyond reason. Stupid.
