2018 has been...a year.

A lot of diverse and exciting moments have happened; from all across multiple platforms. From Streaming services, theaters, and on gaming consoles; it's been a heck of a year. And what better way of celebrating it, by tearing each other apart by top fives!

This could be something from this year, or something you are just experiencing now, as you get caught up in the hype of one particular thing. To give an example..

Films

1: Spider-Man into The Spider-Verse ~ This film was an amazing moment in animation, with some of the most innovative and exciting uses of animation. From the styles of Peni Parker and Peter Porker, to just the buildings and characters of Miles Morale's NY; there is so much love and care put into this. And the story, feels like it's coming right from a comic book, in the best way.

2: Isle of Dogs ~ I love me some Wes Anderson. And man, does Isle of Dogs not disappoint. What I love about this film the most, is just how they tackle the almost fascistic level of speciesism towards the dogs, and how those in Japan are dealing with it. It's not much, but it helps really well with the journey to find Spots...also, it's a Wes Anderson film; leading a lot of fun moments and acting

3: Black Panther ~ I sincerely wish I saw this film more than once. I loved how Coogler directed this heroic outing; as everyone in the film (both on and off-camera) kills it. Best song of the year for me with All The Stars, as I hope it gets some love for the Academy.

4: Crazy Rich Asians ~ Initially, I wasn't much of a fan of the film..until multiple outings. It's a very endearing and funny film, with a lot of great wit and character moments. Amazing outing to Chu, as he killed it.

5: Halloween ~ Halloween was the film that I was most excited in Horror. I tried Hereditary, and couldn't get past the first 20 minutes (it..irked me, more than any other film of the year), as the recent outing was an amazing sight for seeing how the classic IP can be revitalized. Props to Jason Blum for the fantastic endeavor.

(Honorable Mentions: Oceans 8, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man & The Wasp, Ready Player One)

I tried Hereditary, but it was too much for me. I may give it another shot, but it was..not my cup of tea. I do want to see A Quiet Place, BlackKkKlansman, and Bad Times At The El Royale.

I am trying to compile my thoughts in gaming, as it's been a hell of a year for me on my end. But yeah, I can't wait to see what people have to say in regards to 2018.

If I were to do a Top 5 of my favorite things in ALL of entertainment period, Spider-Man would be in it twice with Spider-verse and the PS4 game. Impressive for a year without a SM live-action film in release.

That list would probably look something like this:

1. Spider-Man PS4 - For me, best game of the year by a country mile. The DLCs have been special too, but this was a brand new take on Peter Parker and giving MJ a more meaningful and natural role in the story. The game also lays the ground work nicely for Miles Morales, paving the way for him to have a starring role in the game’s sequel. Same for Norman and Harry’s story, as they laid nice groundwork there, too.

2 Black Panther - A truly great movie that transcended the superhero genre and truly turned it into cultural landmark film.

3. A brief Inquiry into online relationships (The 1975) - Best album of the year imo. The lyrical content is meant to be a wake up call to all of us about how the internet affects our relationship with everyone around us and it also has some tender moments that tie into this theme.

Here's a little something from the album since I assume most haven't heard it. This jam is actually about a heroin addiction, but manages to sound like a love song in a John Hughes movie:

4. Into the Spider-verse - Like walking into a comic book. Best animated film of the year by far and close to best superhero movie (imo).

5. The Greatest Showman - I know this was technically released in 2017, but it made most of its money in 2018 and the soundtrack actually ended up being one of the top 10 selling albums of the year.

Honorable mention: The Sinner. This show is REALLY good. Very much in the same vein as Bates Motel. Jessica Biel and gives the best performances of her career in this show, although I don't think she's been given all that many great roles since her time on 7th Haven.

I actually kind of think 2018 was a severely underwhelming year in film, but since this thread allows for some broader entertainment types, I’ll play along. What follows is a list of 5 items from the worlds of film, television, and music that were some of the highlights of the year for me.

In no particular order:

ANNIHILATION (film) - Though I think it’s a flawed film, it’s the 2o18 movie that made the biggest impression on me. A lingering impression. Alex Garland’s previous movie, EX MACHINA, is definitely superior, but ANNIHILATION still keeps him positioned as one of the most interesting genre filmmakers working.

BETTER CALL SAUL (television) - The best show on television, and I think a case could be made that it’s even better than BREAKING BAD. Bob Odenkirk and (particularly) Rhea Seehorn did awards-worthy work this past season, and the really remarkable thing is that this show, ostensibly a prequel, has consistently made both old and new characters dramatically compelling.

THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE (television) - It botches its landing in the final episode, but up until that point, this is the most tonally-focused slice of supernatural storytelling I saw all year. Episode 6 is a technical tour de force that is more cinematically impressive and immersive than most entire movies from this year.

HARRY POTTER: The John Williams Soundtrack Collection (music) - A box set containing the complete scores to the first three POTTER films. Literally hours of unreleased music are contained in here, and hearing those three scores presented in full form really illuminates just how marvelous Williams’ work is. All of the thematic material really gets to breathe and develop when heard in this expanded format.

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND (film) - While it doesn’t technically go down as one of my favorite movies of 2018, it’s an extremely important one, being the completion of the last project the legendary Orson Welles was working on in the final decade of his life. He never finished it, so it is a simply incredible treat for cinephiles that this thing exists in any viewable form at all. It is a dense, fascinating film that will take me several more viewings to really figure out how I feel about it all, but I’m thrilled people can finally see what Welles spent so much time trying to finish.

These are my personal top 5...a lot may be eclectic and obscure with a lot of foreign properties.

Top 5 films:

5. Burning- Korean Mystery Film based off the book "Barn Burning" by Japanese Writer Haruki Murakami starring Steve Yeun from the Walking Dead. Oscar nominee for best foreign film. It had me on the edge of my seat and was so crazy yo.

4. Black Panther- Just was a really enjoyable film. I loved Wakanda and I also am biased because I was on the set when they were shooting the scenes in Busan, Korea in February 2017.

3. Lu Over the Wall- Japanese animated film that is an adorable musical animated take on the Little Mermaid that put Ponyo to shame.

2. A Star is Born- What more needs to be said. Gaga & Cooper moved me in this drama on fame, relationships, and the consequences.

1.Shoplifters: The film follows a group of people in poverty living in a small home in Tokyo: Osamu, a day laborer forced to leave his job after breaking his ankle; his wife Nobuyo, who works for an industrial laundry service; Aki, who works at a hostess club; Shota, a young boy; and Hatsue, an elderly woman who owns the home and supports the group with her deceased husband's pension. It made me cry so many times. It was so moving and had me at tears at points.

---------------------------------------------------
Top 5 Music
5.Kendrick Lamar-All of the Stars and Black Panther Album: Probably one of the most moving albums that fit a film to a T. Kendrick Lamar was the soundtrack of my Febraury and March as Wakanda was the flavor of the month.

4. End of the World & Epik High- Sleeping Beauty-Single: Japanese EDM group and Korean rap group came together for a mid tempo edm fused rap ballad in English that was straight up moving for its M/V and lyrical content.

3. Happier- Marshmello & Bastille: With an moving video....Marshmello has done it again with a creating a moving EDM song to motivate and move people.

2. DJ Snake-Taki Taki Ft Selena Gomez, Ozuna & Cardi B-Single: Such a fun song and light

1. Blackpink-뚜두뚜두 (Dddu Du Ddu Du) and SQUARE UP ALBUM-The most watched music video of 2018, the highest charting Korean girl group on Billboard, and the number one girl group in the world at the moment put out a catchy song that literally became my theme song in all aspects. From hearing my bosses singing it in the office to seeing my mom cover it on Facebook. The album that came with it was a nice hip hop, reggaeton, and RnB based pop album that created and shaped a lot of memories this year.

--------------------------------------------------
Top 5 games (Simply, I love RPGS and Smash is the only non RPG on this list)
5. PersonaQ2

4. Red Dead Redemption 2

3. Xenoblade Chronicles 2- Torna: The Golden Country

2. God Of War

1. Super Smash Bros

-------------------------------
Top 5 Television Shows
5. Chilling adventures of Sabrina- A Dark and Sassy Show the kept me on my toes and had me smiling from beginning to end. (Netflix)

4. What's Wrong with Secretary Kim- a Korean Rom Com television drama based off a webtoon of the same name. With an extremely funny and attractive cast, I literally could not miss a single episode with my friends. (TvN, Viki)

3. The Good Place Season 3- The Third Season is back, nominated for Golden Globes and one of NBC's highest rated shows. It is da bomb and if you aren't watching it, ya basic. (Hulu, Netflix, NBC)

2. Homecoming Season 1- Julia Roberts and Stephan James are in top form in this thriller based on a podcast with the same name. (Amazon Prime)

1. Happy! Season 1- A crazy action packed thriller with imaginary friends, demons, Chris Meloni, Corrupt Cops, a kidnapping Santa, and the Mafia. Graphic, Grotesque, Weird, Off the walls, yet Epic all at once. (Netflix, Syfy)

To go into it a bit further..

Gaming (I'm including two things from 2017 so bare with me (2016 if you count the JP release of one of those things)

5: Nintendo Switch (& Breath of The Wild) - My first Nintendo console since the GCN, and it's..quite the trip. It's also my first Zelda since Twilight Princess; and I love everything about the console and game. The console has a simple and easy interface, that works really well. And I love, love, LOVE the handheld/hybrid nature; as I have had quite a bit of time for trips with it.

Zelda also..is a hell of a game. It felt daunting to play this, and I got about 85 hours in the base, and love every bit. So happy I got the Switch, as I can't wait for my next big game.

4: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - I'm about 20 fighters through, and I am loving this. The fighting controls are simple and great, with a lot of gorgeous environments and characters. I am loving my time with Corrin/Kamui so-far, and I can't wait to get Simon (as I am hearing great things from him)

3: Pokemon Let's Go Eevee - My first true Pokemon game (in a sense), and I love the crap out of it. Kanto looks stunning, and I love how Eevee works into the game nicely. It's also adorable and I am so glad I picked it up.

2: Red Dead Redemption 2 - Regardless of how I feel towards the working conditions..I absolutely love this game. It was everything I wanted it to be and more. If it wasn't for Number 1, this would be there. And man, for me I find it great as an immersive front. I can't wait to see what Rockstar cook's up next (With treating their employees better, of-course).

1: Persona 5 - I have never been most enthusiastically happy with a game, since The Last of Us. Holy hell, this is an absolute outstanding game, with great characters; mechanics and storytelling angles. I love every second of it, as it also got me the chance to interact with @Joe more with a podcast. I am so happy to have the chance to finally experience it, and I will be pre-ordering a collectors edition of Persona 5 R if that is coming to the Switch

Music

5: God of War Soundtrack by Bear McCreary
4: ODD FUTURE by UVERworld
3: Isle of Dogs soundtrack by Alexandre Desplat
2: Pray for Me by Kendrick Lamar
1: All The Stars by Kendrick Lamar & SZA

MOVIES
5) Ocean’s 8: Breezy fun, made me laugh. Even tho there’s zero suspense whether the heist will work, twists in the script still managed to surprise me a couple times. Not the greatest movie ever but I had a blast seeing it twice.
4) Ant-Man & The Wasp: Funny but with a lot of heart, innovative action scenes. Not too self-serious (unlike Infinity War) and managed to have a supervillain who doesn’t share the hero’s powers and avoid a giant CGI war at the end (looking at you, still very good Black Panther).
3) Aquaman: Goofy 80s fun with striking visuals. A theme park ride of a movie, but I’d rather that than pulp that takes itself too seriously.
2) Mission Impossible Fallout: amazing stunts, perfectly cast villain, not sure what else you can ask from a Summer movie like this.
1) Bohemian Rhapsody: perfectly cast, killer soundtrack (of course), had me wrapped up in the story even tho you could see how it ends even if you didn’t know the band’s history.

Honorable mention: Halloween (best horror), Spiderverse (best animated), Vice (best cast).

TV

5) Magnum PI: surprised myself with this one, wanted to hate-watch it, but keeps everything cool about the original while updating it with a truer-to-real-Hawaii multi-ethnic cast and some made-for-TV Fast & Furious stunts. Magnum and Higgins have charisma to spare, and are very easy to watch. In an era where too many “Golden Age” shows are starting to overreach (e.g. WestWorld, Sharp Objects), nice to see a simple self-contained 45-minute plot done right week after week.
4) Trust: Donald Sutherland and Brendan Frasier are amazing in this. Interesting take on how to tell the story with a different character POV each week, managed to be suspenseful even tho I vaguely knew the major plot points going in. Probably the most creative, risk-taking show I saw this year.
3) The Deuce: season 2 went from sort of a “slice of 70s life” drama to more clearly being a history of the rise of the porn industry and the Disneyfication of 42nd Street. James Franco better than anything else he’s been in, Maggie Gyllenhall also nails it. And the set design and costuming really capture the feel of The Decade That Taste Forgot. If graphic adult material doesn’t offend you, an HBO show worth catching up on.
2) The Good Place: The Australia episodes dragged a bit, but the perfect cast still made them work. Then the twists in the U.S. were just gold. Janet better win an Emmy for that mid-season finale, but even Chidi—the straight man—manages to make his 20-seconds of screen time memorable. If they stick the landing, will replace Frasier as my favorite sitcom of all time.
1) The Americans: Amazing cast, perfect direction, managed to stick the landing after an impressive 6-season run. That finale—can’t remember the last time a work of fiction made me gasp. That episode did it twice. Will never hear “With or Without You” again without thinking of it. Should be in the conversation for GOAT dramatic shows. If you haven’t seen this, don’t spoil yourself, just go watch from episode 1.

Honorable Mention: Archer: Danger Island (animation), Good Eats Reloaded (reality--sort of--TV).

LIVE ACTION SHOWS/THEATER
5) Adventures in Charity 2018: The Final Hoopla: OK, a bit self-serving, so I only put it at #5, but truly, Graham Murphy and his cast put on an amazing show that managed to be nostalgic but also bring the funny. An emotional night for me—it felt like a coda to the longest era of my life—but proud to have played a role in raising $25k for good causes.
4) Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix Tape Live: Michael Roddy gets theme park shows on a level no one else does. Even his proteges are good but not as good. This show was a blast, great song selection, cast having a ton of fun. If you think that’s easy, go see the “Howl O Scream” show or anything in front of Cinderella’s Castle, you’ll see how hard it is to get right like this does.
3) Taylor Swift’s Reputation tour: an odd choice, but with giant snake puppets and lasers and choreography, this was as much a spectacle as a concert. Liked her music fine, not sure I was a “fan” per se—but seeing the way she connected directly with two generations of women was powerful stuff. Also it’s a once a generation performer who can seamlessly shift from a stadium-wide dance along to “Shake It Off” (with #1 artists in their own right as her back up girls!) to a piano-only ballad, explaining that she’d learned the night before a teen told her the song saved him from suicide. There are better singers, better songwriters, better dancers—but I’ve yet to see another person live with Taylor Swift’s charisma.
2) Phantasmagoria IX: Homecoming: quite a few new younger cast members and a bit more levity than in years past helped revitalize the 2018 edition of this Orlando Halloween staple. The stories are getting a bit more obscure as they’ve already done the obvious candidates, but I really like hearing a 19th Century tale from an artist I didn’t know dabbed in fantasy. Even more than HHN, the thing I most look forward to each Halloween season.
1) The Companion/Safe Word: was kind of underwhelmed by Orlando Fringe this year, except for this show. The Orlando Opera sings its way through two stories—one about a mail-order sex robot, the other about a professional Dominatrix, each with a Twilight Zone-like twist at the end. It sounds bizarre, and it was. But it also worked. Singing every word still allowed for both humor and pathos to come through, and even enhanced those emotions somehow. A remarkable, unexpected performance.

Honorable Mention: Glass Tiger at Food & Wine--best EPCOT concert I've seen in years.

THEME PARK ADDITIONS
5) Fast & Furious: Supercharged queue/gift shop: plenty to look at—muscle cars, tools, Easter eggs from the movies and previous attractions—plus Equity actors (glad to see them get work given cuts around Orlando). Puts you in Dominick Torreto’s world and gets you pumped for a kick-ass F&F ride … that sadly never materializes. But bonus points, at least you exit through the best gift shop in Orlando after the crushing disappointment that is the ride.
4) GotG Awesome Mixtape Live: see above
3) Slinky Dog Coaster: incredibly well-themed, and a ton of fun. Can’t wait until Star Wars opens and I can get on it again. May yet prove to be my #2 coaster at WDW behind BTMRR.
2) Hammerhead Fred’s/Adult Cove: the chill bar area Typhoon Lagoon needed, complete with live music on the weekends. The closest land-bound thing I’ve found to the adult deck on DCL.
1) Voodoo Donuts: unique, tasty, Instagram-ready donuts at a fair outside-the-parks price point. There’s a reason this place usually has the longest line at UOR. The perfect store for this location, that holds up its end by providing quality treats and service. The Mouse should have cloned four or five of these already. Best thing Universal has built since Diagon.

Just for fun ... WORST MOVIES
5) Wreck-It Ralph 2: completely unnecessary, undoes the moral of the first movie, and worst of all, unfunny
4) Holmes & Watson: Maybe 25% of the jokes worked. That means 75% did not. Farrell barely can hide the fact he’s trying to pay off his kids’ college and embarrassed to be here.
3) Night School
2) Skyscraper/Rampage (they blend together in my head): And Jumanji was in my top 5 last year. The Rock and Kevin Hart need to be less thirsty.
1) Hereditary: first movie in years I walked out on. Boring and unbelievable.

1) Hereditary: first movie in years I walked out on. Boring and unbelievable.

I have some serious problems with HEREDITARY on a script level, but to its credit, it does contain one big moment that completely blindsided me and left me absolutely stunned for several minutes. There will always be a place in my heart for movies that can do that!

My top 5 things in 2018

  • Yakuza 6 - In early March it was decided my position was not necessary at my company and I was let go. It was a crash for me, including a week long of being sick. After a road trip I started applying for jobs and being a bum. Yakuza 6 came out right as I was looking for a game to really dive into and I bought it after GiantBomb's coverage of the prior games. I fell in love with the locations, the character of Kiryu, and the gameplay. For the first time a brawler/action game made sense and I enjoyed the combat. The story is insane and stupid in the best ways and the side quests are bonkers.
  • Gorillaz 'The Now Now' - Humanz never really sat well with me partially because it felt like the world becoming worse and I wanted answers. If the 2016 election had gone another way Humanz would have been an alternate universe warning, instead it was a nightmare. Damon took criticisms of the album, warranted or not, to heart and created The Now Now, a more introspective and personal album. I've heard it described as "What if 9/11 didn't happen" follow up to their self titled album. Gorillaz albums are about collaboration and destruction: destruction of pop culture, societies, environment, our own humanity, and now ones personal connections. The Now Now is dreamy and dangerous, an album that at first seems breezy summer listening but ends up feeling like an hour long psych appointment. Oh and there are many bangers on the album.
  • Steel Vengeance - A benefit of being unemployed and with severance is I got to explore theme park this year. I made trips to Kennywood, Kings Dominion, Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Dollywood, Carowinds, Silver Dollar City, Six Flags over Texas, Animal Kingdom, and the Universal parks. But nothing this year has topped the additions and changes to Fronteritown at Cedar Point and the opening of Steel Vengeance. The coaster is a coaster fan's dream, with air time to spare, insane coaster elements, and a beautiful skyline. Steel Vengeance is now my number one coaster in the world.
  • My Brother My Brother and Me/McElroy Universe - When one doesn't have a job time loses meaning and day/night mix up. The McElroy properties grounded me fundamentally not only with a weekly release schedule it also kept my spirits up and myself happy. Their advice show My Brother My Brother and Me left me laughing my ass off while their D&D podcast The Adventure Zone built up a world I dove into with characters I loved. I'm happy to see them back with Monster Factory, one of the best shows on YouTube, and cannot wait to see them again live.

  • Into the Spiderverse - I'm not really a movie guy. I'm also in a life state where I need to feel like I'm in control because *see above reasons* and other things that have happened in my personal life. I've tried to watch Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones only to bounce off because that's not where I am mentally right now. How can I watch a man trying to keep his life together while he's dying when I'm trying to keep my life together as *redacted*? Spiderverse dives not only into keeping your poop together in a world of constant change it's also about finding those who share your pain, share your troubles. Plus it too has a banging soundtrack.
  • The Good Place - I'M IN CONTROL SO IT'S SIX NOW. I NEED CONTROL. But The Good Place is all about lack of control and making your own control. Plus it's hella funny and one of the best shows on TV. This is what we all need right now, a show about reformation and the inherent good in people. It's soul food TV with a mandatory podcast attached to it.

I'll do movies only, and in no particular order:

Black Panther
A Simple Favor
BlacKkKlansman
The Endless
Don't Leave Home

Movies:

1. Eighth Grade
2. Can You Ever Forgive Me?
3. Mission: Impossible - Fallout
4. Sorry to Bother You
5. Bad Times at the El Royale

Also enjoyed Blindspotting, A Simple Favor, First Man, and BlacKkKlansman a lot. I still need to see December releases though.

1. Hereditary: A wonderful directory debut by Ari Aster that is about a family falling apart. It's shocking that a Horror Movie today could feel so real like this. It's a genuinely horrifying story with terrific acting by Toni Collette and Alex Wolff. Truly my favorite film of the year.

2. Blackkklansman: Got to see this in theaters with some friends and it was probably the most fun I have had seeing a movie this year. The film is really Really REALLY funny in my opinion. And the presentation of it all is very intriguing and fascinating. The movie has a great soundtrack. It's also really well written and is overall a wonderful comedy by Spike Lee.

3. Avengers Infinity War: Deserved any and all sort of praise it got. It's one of the best MCU films and is a blast to watch. It's wonderful in that every character no matter how many all are well written and feel and act how they are in their individual films and the film is focused on Thanos. Which is also one of the best MCU Villains (Possibly the Best). He is wonderfully written and the VFX/Special Effects for the film are fantastic. A amazing film and a amazing experience watching it for the first time.

4. Aquaman: A serious surprise for me this year was Aquaman. A film with some breathtaking visuals and a great soundtrack (Aside from that Africa Cover lol). The Story is really well written and lots of moments in the story that come back later. Have seen it twice and is easily the best DCEU film for me. Tons of heart and good writing to it. Hopefully Shazam can keep up.

5. Upgrade: Some of my favorite action scenes come from this film. Was on board when the trailer came out and seeing it, it's wonderful. Tons of good writing and great fight choreography. The directing and the style is wonderful and the message of it ultimately ties it all in a nice neat bow.

HM's: A Quiet Place, Deadpool 2, Bumblebee, Bohemian Rhapsody.

Need to Check Out: Spiderman Into the Spiderverse, Isle of Dogs, Crazy Rich Asians, Ready Player One, Annihilation, Mission Impossible Fallout, Sorry to bother you, A Star is born, Mid90s, Christopher Robin, Eighth Grade, Roma, Green Book, If Beale Street Could Talk, First Reformed.

*Edited to change #5

5. Game of Thrones: Live Concert Experience. As a huge GoT fan, I was fascinated at seeing how they bring the music to life and equally amazed at the performances considering that each show used local musicians. This helped with the wait for Season 8 a lot.
4. Sharp Objects. Full disclosure: I've had a crush on Amy Adams for 12 years now, so there was no way I was going to miss this. The series is not for the squeamish, but I still couldn't look away. The performances and suspense is amazing and the story challenges the way you may look at "good girls". If Eliza Scanlen is snubbed at the Emmys next year, it would be a travesty.
3. A Series of Unfortunate Events: Season 2. The production values are great as ever and the humor is darkly top notch as well. NPH still steals every scene he's in. I can't wait to see how it ends with the final season despite having read all the books.
2. Paddington 2. After hearing all the buzz this film got, I made a point to do a double feature for the two movies. Holy crap, what a evening that was. This was such a charming and fun movie that I can't recommend enough. My biggest regret was not catching this in theaters. I'll make sure to do that for the third one.
1. Avengers: Infinity War. I might be a little biased since I saw this at the Orlando 4DX, but it was the most fun I've had at the movies (and themed entertainment in general) this year. It was such a thrill seeing all the heroes together and Thanos is one of the best MCU villains we've gotten yet. Hoping to see Part 2 the same way.

Honorable Mention: Happily Ever After. Not a 2018 addition, I know. But I didn't see it until this past February. It completely blows away Wishes and makes me look forward to whatever Disney has in store for Epcot's new night show.
