2018 TEA Attendance Report

Knotts and Cedar Fair confirmed they had over 6 million guests in 2018. TEA says it's 4 million. As usual:

I have a real hard time believing DHS grew 5% in attendance while Epcot only jumped 2%.

Because the parks don't release those numbers. All of this is a guestimate from TEA.

I’m aware of that. Yet somehow everyone always knows TEA is wrong and speaks as if they know better.

It happens every single year.

Exactly! Everyone knows, but no one knows.

Those who have access to the numbers are under confidentiality agreements. The only umber on there we know for sure is SeaWorld San Diego which posted it to show the turnaround. Aside from that all the numbers are officially "trade secrets"

And it will every other year. As long as people don’t treat it as gospel, it’s a fine way of measurement... since it’s all we got.

Sorry to double up but this is the report always gets questioned. So either they overreported last year, or underreported this year.

So it appears for 2018, Universal Japan suffered a negative 4.3 fall in attendance.

After years of successive growth, i'm quite surprised by this fall. Disney over in Tokyo, after years of stagnation seems to have got some major growth growing this year.

Any thoughts on this ...

2. Tokyo DisneySea, 14,651,000, 8.5%
3. Universal Studios Japan, 14,300,000, -4.3%

Really nothing major to bring new guests in. Think of the past few years-

-Potter
-Minions
-Flying Dinosaur
-Reborn Celebration 15th which the Japanese went CRAZY over.

Recent additions have been small but needed to fill out the park, such as Sing, Curious George and the nighttime parade.

They have added a raft of new additions these past few years. I would have expected a hold over, or at least minimal growth. But for a pretty considerable fall - that's surprising.

Other than some anniversary celebrations over at Disney (basically a few extra parades) they didn't do anything - and that's after years of stagnation.

Maybe it's an anomoly, or perhaps people waiting for Nintendo Land and there are guests holding off, etc

The park is based on heavily on local populace and repeat visits. Osaka was hit by a lot of inclement weather and other natural disasters. I don't know about you but if Orlando got hit by a bad storm would the locals focus on going to Disney or going to take care of their stuff at home.

Additionally while the things they are bringing for Cool are popular, they got rid of their biggest and most popular kid attraction (Yokai Watch the walkthrough and the show) for Curious George which yes is popular in Japan but not as popular as Yokai Watch.

I blame heavily Universal for getting rid of the guy after the full purchase who actually understood the Japanese audience and their likes for the new president who while is great at adding small scale attractions is so focused on the forest he is missing all the individual trees that make up the forest.

The fact there was an earthquake in June and a Typhoon as well (Jebi) might have something to do with that, both of those were highly disruptive.

If a major Hurricane (like Michael) were to hit Orlando dead on and directly impact the parks it would be probably closed for days or at least have a tremendous drop off in attendance also.

The night parade isn't a small addition. They spent ride level money on that one.

Yes...and to add.....Comcast/Universal, in a couple of quarterly reports has pointedly stated the bad weather was a principle problem in Japan's attendance in 2018.
