Since they do this EVERY YEAR and know it'll be popular, is it too much to ask they build really basic queues that have some form of protection from the elements and a little of climate control?

I would say yes. Which is why I opt for my own protection from the elements: Universal Express.

I'm not sure it can be enjoyed without express any longer. I certainly am not going to find out.

I went without express for the first time last year sat on the 2nd weekend. Honestly wasn't that bad at all, maybe it was because I had great friends with me but time seemed to fly and if you have the option of going to the holding pens, you could possibly do all houses in a night. My friends and I did 8 houses within the first 3 hours because of it. The more HHN adds to offerings the more the lines seem to swindle. With the rumor of a 10th house this year I doubt it will be that bad for much longer

A lot of the queues are used for backstage throughout the day until HHN, so I hope they could buy don't know how.

I never go with an umbrella and I've had no problems whatsoever. Must be my luck!!! I wish they would find ways to put a tarp or tent over the queues just in case but it really isn't that big of a deal. Just bring an umbrella if it's that big of a deal, the unprepared will flock meaning no wait!!!

I leave an umbrella in my car. When I park in the garage I check the forecast for the remainder of the evening and then decide if I'm taking it with me.
