Obvious comparison. Polanski won the 2003 Oscar, so the whole story was very fresh in the media consciousness in 2003. Even the Director’s real name (“Paulo Ravinski”) is an obvious play on Roman Polanski’s name.

The icons work because of their connection to the event. If you start thinking about them as independent stories, and then start to view those stories in relation to stories that have already been told, their weaknesses as characters become glaring. A killer clown that acts like Freddy Kruger isn’t interesting (or unique) enough to make a marketable movie, and the HHN fandom isn’t enough to make an uninteresting movie marketable.

Playing Devil's Advocate I would say that there's plenty of ways to re-use an old cliche or trope in the horror genre and make it feel fresh and I think that lies mostly in the execution. Just because Jack is a clown with Freddy's personality doesn't mean he can't be the center of an interesting movie. Same as how you can stick a group of teenagers in a cabin in the woods and make it an interesting movie in 2021, it all depends on the execution and ideas within and around that similar sentiment.

That said I wouldn't be pushing for them to make full length features about any of the icons. I do think an HHN branded anthology series could do quite well depending on the talent behind it and how they presented it, of course. If you garner some success with that then I think you can do whatvever you want with an icon centered episode or two.

I think it's a little Columna A and a little of Column B. A nice side effect on the merch dump.... a quick advertising campaign.

You think these are leftovers? Why wouldn't they have just put them out with the rest of the merch last year? This looks to be a re-design to me. Advertises the new announcment/event, and gives the people that bought the other stuff new and different things to buy.
