Which as Brian said didn't go up till the announcements.

This wasn’t ALWAYS true.

For 19 we got the Palace Theater and various stories around it that hinted at the houses before the official unveiling of the houses in August-ish.

I will gladly take the podcasts/posting of the stories for the original houses/zones as a substitute, honestly.

Nothing will be worse than the "are they going to cancel it" 2020 speculation.

That wasn’t really speculation - it was month after month of coping and denial after it was incredibly obvious the event was cancelled.

I genuinely can't remember where the After Hours bar was at UOR last year. Can someone refresh my memory?

For several years (including the aughts) EVERYTHING was announced the last Thursday of August. The slow build sites occurred from 2004 through 2009 but, as nice as the websites were, they invited a lot of “What does it MEAN” based spec that could be infinitely more insufferable than “what’s happening.”

I don't know anything about website development, but is it wrong to assume that the same type of game playing websites Universal used back in the day, would take far less resources and funds to create in 2023? I feel like technology has evolved and it would take very little effort to have some fun with all types of fans like they did back in the day.

Again, no knowledge of how this is all done, but I'm just curious.

So my understanding is that it's not necessarily easier, just different. Flash was replaced by HTML5 <canvas> which is a lot heavier on the Javascript. One of the upsides of Flash was that it had a really good editor that abstracted a lot of the coding away from the artist/user. There are a lot more Javascript game frameworks nowadays but I don't know if they're quite as easy for non-developers to use as Flash was. So maybe easier for someone technical but harder for someone non-technical.

But I'm more of a mobile/backend engineer these days so I could be totally off base here.

Doesn't mean I haven't thought of trying my hand of trying my hand at a fan made new old-school HHN website :)

Probably, but HHN has 10x the exposure it used to. Now that it’s a major corporate event (with UO growing significantly along with it) it needs major corporate oversight from the bureaucracy. It’s not about the time and resources of the HHN team, but of Legal, Marketing, etc.

When did you typically get the full event drop in those years?
The full event? Usually mid to late August.

The first teasers were usually around June. For example, HHN 19 - they first teased the "Big 3" IPs of Wolfman, Saw, and Chucky along with basic event dates and info on June 25th (to which the website updated with hints and stuff). We got the full drop and theme reveal on Aug 27th.

Granted, the event started Sept. 25 but it just shows how much things have changed.

Eh, as Legacy said before, it’s more the site was a fun thing creative did on the side, not a project with proper budgeting and such. Regional park vs vacation destination stuff.

With all the talk and speculation all over the internet about HHN, they don’t need to do anything. People here and everywhere speculating, theorizing, and obsessing is doing more than any paid marketing campaign.

I got confirmation today of five IPs

This. I honestly don’t know why they would be in too big of a hurry to announce. One thing we do know is that once the announcements stop the obsessing & spec stops ….. briefly.

I’d imagine it’s that…with UOR’s focus on digital transformation over the past several years I figure they’ve built out a more robust attribution model, so projects like a website need assigned T-shirt sizes and sprint projections to ensure there’s a budgetary justification for it (compared to back in the day when, from what I understand, HHN was a more guerilla-style team). But HHN is also now the face of a major resort with international attendance and major contracts with Warner Bros, Nintendo, etc., which I have to imagine means everything that gets published in a guest-facing setting goes through various rounds of legal approvals. One single site with a few informational pages is a lot easier to bang out and get signed off on than interactive web pages and games.

"HHN marketing is horrible."

"They don't know their @$$ from a hole in the ground."

"They're really missing out on potential ticket sales"

"They had great websites a decade and a half ago."

"They need to release more info earlier."

(not actual quotes, just paraphrasing common complaints)

Nevermind the fact that ticket prices have more than doubled and the lines (indicating the amount of tickets sold) has tripled since they did all that magical marketing.

People need to chill out and realize this is a business. If the business is doing gangbusters, to the point that not only are express tickets selling out most nights, but the event as a WHOLE is selling out nights in early September. Guess what? What they're doing, that is an affront to our sensibilities and so utterly stupid that my dog could do marketing better than them is WORKING. They're printing money.

Get over it. You are still going to the event, so who cares what you know now? Marketing doesn't micro manage down to the fan base(s), their job is to get butts through the turnstile for the event and drive revenue. And they're doing TOO GOOD of a job in my book, the event is too crowded, too popular, and too expensive.

Would I love interactive and engaging websites? Of course. Would I prefer that flying on an airplane was a regal experience like in the 60s where you got complementary champagne to celebrate the majesty of flight? Sure. Do I wish Busch Gardens and Sea World gave out free beer (yes, I realize there's a limited promotion doing so right now) all year? Of course. But guess what, those things cost money and used to be needed to draw paying customers to come. If they don't need to do it now, it's a waste of time and money from budgets that could be used elsewhere.

But if you want to get butthurt because you didn't get an announcement when you personally thought you should get one, you're probably right. Marketing $#!+ the bed once again and are horrible at their job. You and your dog would do a much better job by revealing everything too early, spending millions on web content, putting billboards up across America, putting commercials on local TV stations in Maine, and demanding that the HHN A&D team figure out a way to have 13 houses this year.

Umm.. why all the hostility? Personally, I am careful about what I post because I never want to come off as a complainer. It's not in my nature. I have made a few comments about being frustrated, but I've not said anything negative about Uni overall. All I said was they changed the game for announcements. My point being, that is what is causing the frustration here. Some are more vocal than others and have some wild opinions, but, in the end, I think we ALL understand this is a business. What it comes down to is - we are here because we love the event. If people start going over the top, that's what the Mods are for. I don't think a public lambasting like this is really warranted. I guess if it makes you feel better, rock on with your bad self. The rest of us will carry on and learn the patience of a Buddhist Monk.
