But to fuel the Horror Unleashed theory they are even on playing cards, maybe a reference to gambling? Vegas?

This summarizes this year's event. Something specifically tied to TM tees should never be sold to the public.

Give it away to TMs that received guest compliments, hard-working F&B staff, etc.

I'm very disappointed at the management of this year's event overall.

Agreed; I've seen TM shirts make it to the garage sales but selling it in a main store is certainly a choice.

I'll never forget hearing a presentation from someone who worked in Disney merchandise and they were (at the time) so obsessed with brand integrity and image that they would rather burn/destroy slow-selling merchandise rather than move it via heavy discounting.

If Merchandise/Drinks/Specialty food sales are down, I'd guess there might be a poor demographic mix. And perhaps the overall attendee age is skewing too young. Can't spend much if you don't have jobs or money.

I think that's possible. It's almost certainly a mixture of this, off-putting merch and expensive food/alcohol. Of course, it's always been expensive, but we're getting to a point where I can see people pre-gaming elsewhere rather than spending $50 a night on booze.
