I don’t know much about the Backrooms(i plan to watch the movie at some point) but i have played a fan game of it on Roblox once and it had an interesting atmosphere. I wouldn’t be against it coming to the event and i think it could be pretty trippy

I've wanted a liminal space inspired house for a while now (though I agree with the fact that it would be hard to replicate that feeling with many scareactors lol), so im in favor of a backrooms house! i feel like they could really use the heck outta that trick where they hide a scareactor behind a mirror. the backrooms wall pattern would lend itself well to repetition with a mirror, and then rooms could seem empty until theyre not even more effectively than traditional boo holes

Me wish posting ages ago lol:

I mean… no? The key thing that makes liminal spaces “liminal” is a lack of living things in the space.

A pillar of liminal spaces is the absence of living things, particularly other people, with the implication that the viewer is alone

That’s impossible when you have a congo line like HHN. Like, literally impossible. If HHN built this, it would just feel like a bad run of a sparsely decorated haunted house.

is there a way to disappear someone entirely so that they're not just folded but doesn't show up in the first place?

I've seen a fair share of people musing of Backrooms being a house, but I will have to agree with Legacy here that it's not feasible like you think it might be.

To add to this, so if you want a liminal space type of house at HHN. Well first, it's needs to be an upcharge house because any conga line makes the concept impossible. Secondly, you better hope people will find walking through empty sets the most amazing thing ever, otherwise they're going to be very irked they had to pay extra for it.

There are some concepts which just don't translate well into a house, and this is one of them. Heck, one year at the Haunt I work at we tried having a moment like this in our trail with a long, winding section with zero actors. The idea being it would creep people out or potentially have them drop their guard for when the next actual scare happens...and that concept was scrapped from hereafter as it just. didn't. work. . More often than not, guests were just wondering where the actors were, and not in a scared way...more of a "Oh, they're being cheap." kind of way. And you never want your guests feeling that way at a Haunt, let alone one as big as HHN.

If they somehow figured out how to make a horror IP rooted with ASL as a core feature/barrier for how you translate a piece of media to match that of what's represented for a walkthrough experience (or multiple music albums and video games respectively into houses); then they can absolutely make The Backrooms work.

Doubly so, if you get Kane Pixels onboard to make it more along the lines of a Original-IP.

I mean, did they do that? Or did they have some actors doing some sign language while loud noises and scary puppets jumped out at you?

If it managed to still get the point across, then it still got the point across. I do think the key in translating The Backrooms lies in that you can't treat it like a straight-forward adaptation (and if it's treated more as an Original-IP along the lines of Jason Universe, Chucky: UKC, or even The Weeknd: Nightmare Trilogy).

You will need someone who is part of the sect to be able to help get the creatives onboard on how to translate. If it's an adaptation of Kane Pixel's indie series of Enter The Backrooms combined with the film, assuming if Murdy, Aiello, and Kane are working together; I could see a case/point made if they try to cherry pick.

Also helps that Murdy doesn't seem to be ruling out indie animation for HHN in consideration. Perhaps I'm off base.

You can to an extent! If you’re scrolling a page and someone that you have muted posted something it’ll simply say “show muted content” (or something along those lines) so, as long as you don’t click on that, you won’t see the responses from the person you have muted (but you will see if anyone else responded to them).

But… again… liminal spaces (the whole basic premise of The Backrooms) is premised entirely on isolation. That requires being alone (or a part of a very small group. It also (commonly) involves vastness or distance in a physical space and silence to emphasize the isolation and loneliness.

The ability to imitate the physical space is possible (with mirrors), though those effects require either extra space backstage (which is why Universal doesn’t use them all the time) or screens or dioramas (which always comes across as pretty flat). The silence is much harder at scale. You can’t do a whisper hallway for the entire house. The isolation is legitimately impossible in a HHN house.

Now, I haven’t seen the movie yet. Assuming the film doesn’t devolve into a purge-like monster-fest, it’s not really comparable to A Quiet Place. The primary fear-driver in AQP isn’t the silence itself, it’s the Death Angels. The silence and ASL is a way to AVOID a very physical, violent creature that can be anywhere. The Death Angels are an ever present danger (that’s why we see the kill in the opening, to establish they can be on you in an instant).

The Backrooms (from what I gather), don’t have that sort of ever-present danger except the rooms themselves (and the idea of what could be there, not exactly what is). And those are scary because they’re liminal spaces. That is THE primary driver of the fear (which I mentioned, cannot truly be replicated at HHN); the idea of what can exist in the emptiness. That means that any attempt at a Backrooms house is going to immediately have to work around the thing that makes The Backrooms works. If there are no visible (or extremely few) antagonistic creatures, the actual scares would be… victims looking around lost?

I liken it to Grave of Flesh. Grave of Flesh actually did a good job of confusing you, making you feel lost, and replacing the sense of isolation with a constant “what is happening,” mindset that kinda sorta parallels liminal spaces. And those exact, liminal-type sensations were what people hated about the house.

Look, I hear what everyone's saying about how the maze won't work, I don't even necessarily disagree, but it's not like Universal hasn't made bad mazes based on popular IP (hello Hollywood Stranger Things 2).

With the amount of money Backrooms is gonna rake in this weekend, I'm sure they'll come up with something if they really wanna bring it. It doesn't have to be good to be popular.

$50M isn’t that much in the grand scheme of things.

A big win for a gen-z director with a small budget and A24 for sure. But not necessarily something that HHN is going to bend over backwards to “figure out”

Sinners made $45 million domestic its opening weekend ($61 total globally). But, I do think there’s a massive difference in “figuring out” the execution of a fairly simplistic vampire movie produced by a studio you’ve worked with before and an esoteric, vibe-focused creepy pasta produced by a studio you’ve never worked with it.

I feel like eventually, they're gonna have to touch the A24 bubble. The question is when, not necessarily if (especially with films like Curry Barker's Texas Chainsaw Massacre on the horizon).
