I tried to buy Express two years ago and it was sold out for opening weekend. I had 2 options though, upgrade my ROF to ROF+Ex or buy an Unlimited express pass. I did this in the early morning.
For the after 11 express, I've also been able to purchase at guest services for multiple days in the future, although his was 2018 or 2019. Anyway, the sooner you try in person the better.

I had a similar experience in 2019, so not sure how different it is now. We went into Kwik E Mart on the morning of our HHN night and bought Express passes no problem!

I’m going Saturday (9/20) and doing S&S. Is the belief that with the new way of queuing for houses that it’ll be an impossibility to see both shows and all 10 houses without express?

I haven't been yet, first day is Friday, but with NF lines being so crazy you have to devout a lot of time to see it, so will be difficult without Express.
