This one stings a bit, since I do like the ideas and concepts they're playing with, and an infected/sickly kind of wolfman is an intriguing one. But the wolfman design they're showing is just not it. I don't get Wolfman out of it, not even a sickly one. For me I'm getting infected hobo/goblin, no wolf to be found.

I know some folks are speculating that perhaps the one they're showing is the one who turned the father and it's some old man. But even if that's the case, that doesn't change my feelings on this design at all.

I just hope Whannell isn't overthinking things.

There's a fine line between doing something different, and not satisfying what a viewer would be looking for when they walk into a werewolf movie.

Whannell is a super talent, intelligent, passionate film maker and it's very exciting that he had a vision and is seeing it through rather than going "So how can we have a guy get attacked and do the transformation scene we've seen done a dozen times now once more?"

It's cool to see innovation in a story as entrenched as The Wolf Man. And if it's not any good? The ones that came before it still exist and they'll be plenty more 'guy turns into large angry dog' films in the future.

Yeah guys, it's The Fly with a werewolf. It's neat. We're getting other werewolf movies too, might as well get something new every now and then.

It’s believed the original werewolf myths came about because of rabies, so this take on the character is actually refreshingly accurate.

You can still do that "take" and have a werewolf that actually looks like there's some "wolf" involved.

And again, a WOLF MAN movie from Universal might not be the best place for experimentation like this. The character is one of the Big Three Classic Monsters.

Ginger Snaps technically did the whole "werewolf is a virus " thing already and their wolf creature looked really good.
it had great build up

I'd be more worried about not eventually getting a classic wolfman movie if they hadn't just done three Dracula movies.

If you enjoyed SMILE, I can't imagine not enjoying SMILE 2. Bigger, grosser, more ambitious. Excellent lead performance from Naomi Scott.

And...
... the great ending definitely sets-up a potentially very exciting SMILE 3 that would really push the franchise conceit into a new place.

When it comes to monsters, Dracula/Vampires are often portrayed far more often in media than wolfman/werewolves, so a bunch of Dracula films being made doesn't mean there's going to be a plethora of Wolf Man films on the way as well.

And that's the thing, the concept of the movie is totally fine. In fact, reports from test screenings have been very positive about that and most of the movie, so people are understanding the concept. But there's one complaint being reported and it's the design of the Wolf Man itself. It just doesn't look like a wolf in any way, and that's a massive problem for your main monster here.

Once again, you can do an infected/sickly kind of wolf man. If you wanna' make him hairless, ok. Just make sure you have the facial features and whatnot that read wolf in some fashion, but since folks in screenings were saying "Why doesn't he look like a wolf?" , that's a whiff on the design.

Says who? When was it ever decreed law that franchises need to always follow the same format?

I love when series that are well established and rich try new things. It breathes new life into it rather than compounding it with more and more of the same executed in less and less interesting or innovating ways.

I wish I had enjoyed Smile more to be excited for the sequel but it was so cookie cutter and filled with logic holes that I didn't really enjoy it so Smile 2 will be on the back burner for me until it's more readily available.

I did some major catching up last night and decided that since I loved The Substance so much, I would finally watch Coralie Fargeat's debut film Revenge and if The Substance wasn't enough on its own, she's instantly shot up to one of my favorite directors considering both of her feature efforts. Revenge plays in the same hyper concentrated reality The Substance does and was so devastatingly effective in some of its squirm inducing scenes. What a great role reversal film, what a great soundtrack, what a great eye for utter cinematic madness. I hope Fargeat gets all the money in the world to keep making whatever the hell she wants.

Regarding fears over the look of the "Wolf Man..." I'd invite everyone to look up the creature that started the chain of Wolfmen present in the 2010 Universal remake.

I'm actually a little disappointed by that opening tbh. It's only a tad higher than the first and being a sequel + opening in late October, it's bound to leg out far less.

Gonna try to see it this week.

It does not look good. There is not any amount of "well aktually" you can do to make the design look good.

There are many Stephen King books that could support eight episodes.

CARRIE is not one of them.
