New Line owns the trademark on Friday the 13th (confirmed via US trademark office). They bought it from Paramount, the original distributors of the F13 movies.

So how do they not also own "Jason Vorhees" and the relevant imagery?

Someone catch me up. How can they use Jason but not Friday the 13th? Those are tied at the hip.

The only thing they cannot use is the name "Friday the 13th", but they have access to the content of the films. It's similar to how the Chucky franchise hasn't been able to use the title "Child's Play" in a long time (except for that awful remake).

This is where things get fuzzy, and probably the only people who truly know are the copyright lawyers who've read the original contract. I know there's a law where screenwriters who create original material are allowed to take back partial ownership of the work after 35 years, and that there was a spree not too long ago of writers of hit 80s movies doing just that. There's also the aspect that Friday the 13th was originally an independent film that was purchased by Paramount rather than something the studio made themselves, which opens up the question of what rights they originally bought.

Either way though, New Line owns the trademark (unlike Evil Dead, where the trademark is owned by Renaissance Pictures) and Jason Universe is clearly able to do stuff outside of their remit.

So can New Line use Jason Vorhees?

This is kinda baffling to me. The partial ownership deal makes it even more complicated.

My guess is that it's baffling to the people who own the respective rights as well.

I'm hoping the vibes are more akin to 17's Camp Blood and less like 25's FvJ. I'm looking for a more gritty, chaotic, relentless and visceral house rather than a more polished, high-concept cinematic house featuring more choreographed (feeling) kills.

I know the location has a rocky history, but this year, it seems like they are attempting to maximize the location’s unique qualities.

I hope it works! Kinda why I’m very curiously optimistic about it!

After some reflection I've decided that "Kill Jason Kill" is the best F13 maze name. Enthusiastic, it's fun to say, and it subtly references the camp setting while also being an accurate description of what Mr. Voorhees generally does. It also puts you in the position of rooting for Jason, which let's be honest, a lot of us are.

I'm excited to see how the creative team handles a 'legacy' house for Jason but my excitement is extremely tempered by the entirety of the Jason Universe experience Friday fans have been given since the company's creation a relatively short time ago. In as few words as possible, as a huge Friday the 13th fan, it's been a pretty big let down so far and, for me, it does not feel like the character is in great hands. Obviously, we will see but as it stands, my own excitement for the future of Jason Voorhees has waned considerably.

I wonder exactly how much freedom Universal will have with the house given the murkiness and how muddy the F13 rights battle was. Will they be able to give beat for beat recreations of iconic Jason kills? Will they only be able to do 'echos' that are similar but not exact? Will the be restrained to creating only new set pieces (which honestly would probably create the best house)? I also think the house will be hampered by the extremely weak new design for Jason, which is obviously out of their hands but will still affect the house.

The new design is one of the biggest road bumps we've gotten with Jason Universe. It's wrong. You would think it would be easy to update the design of a hockey masked killer and yet they found a way to muck it up. The hope was that this was just a concept stage and that a better design would be coming but with it now present in media and merchandise for this house, it's likely here to stay and that's a huge bummer.

Excited for the house but tempered excitement due to the company they're having to work with to produce it.

Is the beetle parked in the area between the F&F queue portion exit and the tent portion entrance? Looks pushed back relative to Blumhouse / Chucky, so could be cool use of space if we get a mini “haunted trail” portion out there. Though maybe just a bigger facade I suppose.

the logo is cringey as hell, very very corny. and outside of the mask I really hated the jacket they picked for him lol. I really don't like it in the promo pic.
but hopefully everything works in real life.
