I think they were hoping to build their own CU that could cross over into the main MCU films eventually, making all of their Sony-verse films required watching to understand the lore for event films like Infinity War and Endgame. These villain movies were never going to work without Spiderman. Venom made money because it's Venom. In order to even make the villain movie with out the main hero, you have to make them the sympathetic protagonist which makes no sense especially with somebody like Kraven.

It's just sad because some of these movies had potential lol. I liked Venom 2 and Madame Web (unpopular take, I know!) but everything else bleh. Remember when they were going to make an El Muerto movie??? That would've been very funny at least.

Sony and Lucasfilm going neck and neck trying to see who can outdo each other in announcing projects that never happen.

Without knowing the intricacies of the contractual arrangement between Sony and Marvel that has "loaned" Spider-Man to the MCU, it's hard for me to see a clear picture of what Sony's strategy with these movies has been. Because, in a vacuum, deciding to make a bunch of Spider-Man villain movies without Spider-Man (and where the villains aren't really villains) was an absolutely ridiculous direction in which to go.

But perhaps Sony is not allowed to make other live action films featuring Spider-Man while they're sharing another version with the MCU. That's the only explanation that would make any sense to me.

I think it's clear Sony was trying to set up a Universe so they could pull Holland out of the MCU and bring him over, but aside from Venom, audiences haven't connected and Sony has realized that working with Spider-man in the MCU is way more lucrative than him not being in the MCU.

What sucks is its a great set up for future Spiderman films, like Kraven hunting Spiderman against others like Scorpion and The Hobo Goblin would be an exciting film but....Sony sucks

They really are the slop studio right now. Outside of animation and a few movies that were received well, everything they’ve put out in the past few years has been mediocre at absolute best. I really, really hope Nintendo rethinks their choice to make a live action Zelda movie with them, I can’t think of a worse pick
