I think it's much more likely that, to @Jerroddragon's point, they're hesitant to shut down their brand-new ride for extended refurbishment. I don't think there's any reason to believe there's parts availability issues.

Forbidden journey does not shut down for extended maintenance, things go down due to parts. This ride will have a similar life… I doubt this ride will ever go down for an extended period of time ever.

Given that there is a gate on what seems to be a movable platform when you're returning to the station, that's probably how they do it; taking out certain karts into the maintenance bay and probably swapping them out.

Yeah. Plus I’m sure the turnaround everyday maintenance isn’t as bad as forbidden journey. They basically work right when the last guests is off to right before the first guests are allowed on lol

Okay, I'm gonna ask: How on earth do you get the Start line coin bonus? I've tried to attempt it like the last ten rides I've done it but I can't get it. I tried to push the buttons right when the countdown hits 2. What do I need to do? C'mon spill your secrets to the class!

I just need the 200 coin and the start line stamp and I will have all of the stamps for Mario Kart. It's really hard to get to 140 for me and even then that's if I'm REALLY hauling.

You press after 2 begins to fade or right after it disappears (its just like in Mario Kart 8).

Well I just did this twice…no dice. I guess the timing is extremely picky???

Well I’ve got a BIG secret I’m willing to share with the whole class. I fellow single rider just filled me in on this on my second ride today and it got me up to my all-time best score of 199 (ONE COIN SHORT OF GETTING THAT STAMP UUUUGGHH)

I literally have been doing this wrong for the past two years. When the arrows pop up calling you to turn the wheel, you are actually supposed to hold the wheel into position for at least five seconds. When I did this, I got at least 5 coins per turn.

Now you’re gonna get a higher score than everyone else in your vehicle. You’re welcome.

EDIT: I FINALLY DID IT! I FINALLY GOT ALL THE STAMPS FOR MARIO KART LETS GOOOO. I got the start bonuses but there was no sound queue that let you know you got it. Oh well. A w is a w.

That start coin bonus is always really difficult for me to get too. I have no problem doing this when I'm actually playing Mario Kart, but on the ride I rarely can make it happen.

It's probably right as the 2 stops moving. As someone who's played MK8D a lot I've consistently gotten it that way and I use both buttons just in case. If that doesn't work it could be a fluke with the cart. Can't say I remember the last time I had it not go through though.

The indicator for getting it is seeing coins appear in front of you as the Kart begins moving.
And yeah, if there's one thing the pre show absolutely bungles, it's that detail about turning. I thought it was previously brought up here but apparently not. I was lucky enough to hear it from another rider during AP previews and I've consistently hit 200+ coins on every ride since.

I have seen some TMs talk to help explain the ride during the pre show, which makes me wonder if any have mentioned that as they're talking.

You'll know if you got the boost start in the moment when you hear your engine revving more aggressively (just like in Mario Kart 8).

Oh nvm, you had already said that (and got it to work, nice!).

My highest score is currently 250 and I honestly can't reach any higher than that. Maybe if I lived in LA I could practice a lot more to get that elusive 300+ score.

I seriously wonder how those 250+ people do it, I've never managed to get that.

This is a tired topic by now, but after countless rides at both USJ and USH and finally reaching 250… I like this ride less-and-less each playthrough. It’s still a beautiful ride but last weekend it felt like stuff was really deteriorating — though that’s not even my main issue. I think the game is just not fun. It’s arguably more fun on the first playthroughs where you don’t get it, because once you do get it, the game is weirdly paced, slow, and never particularly satisfying. The motion controls with limited ammo just don’t work.

I’d love to see them change the game up. I know they won’t, but I’m sure a better version of this exists.

I think what makes Toy Story Mania my favorite In Game attraction is its fun, fast, has lotttttts of secrets, when you shoot you know where its going to hit(its very accurate) and once again fun because you can't run out of ammo

I know Nintendo wants you to hit the blocks and get items but its shells...so rather just have unlimited shells and get items on the way they give you different boots or effects.

But also I don't ride this as a game, I ride it like a dark ride and its still a great dark ride. I know many online always crap on the ride, but like many things the ride has the longest waits in the parks...you can say its new but its been 2 years people seem to keep coming back for more of it. So Nintendo and Universal won't listen to people online until in real life the ride fails

I kind of get some of the issues, and I wish the maintenance was more consistent but I still think the ride is fun. I can get behind the issue of limited ammo and how it's not always consistent but I still think people are too hard on this ride. Though I do wonder if it might not be until after Epic Universe opens that they start introducing updates to the game itself so that all iterations get them at once. Kind of like how Star Tours gets updated.

Anyway I've never been able to get past a score of 236, so score attacking is a big reason I keep coming back, especially when I see some people are even able to score 300+ on the ride. Then again I'm probably biased because I grew up with a lot of arcade games, and rides like this feel like an elevated arcade experience, so if there's anything that's why I still like the ride other than brand loyalty, it's definitely that. I also do concur that the set design is always a treat even if it's not always easy to take it in.

Side note: unless I'm missing something that makes it easier to work with, the one thing that keeps me from doing Toy Story Mania again and again is how it can get tiring to rapidly fire. :nervous:

Some extra Boo's to shoot for Halloween time or Ice enemies at Christmas time would be very welcome along with any other ways to update the AR

Definitely. There is a lot to love about this ride, and even as stuff gets a little broken into (Rainbow Road just didn’t appear on my last ride), it’s still lovely getting to see these sets come to life. And it was very much a noble endeavor to create such a skill-rewarding game at a theme park.

Too true on Mania. I adore TSMM (as well as the Phantasialand version, Maus au Chocolat,) but god I’m equally pained and happy every time I ride. It’s weirdly fortunate that it’s never a walk-on.

Yeah like I know this may sound like a crazy take, but I find Toy Story Mania to be the way superior attraction. Even though it's waaaaaaay less elaborate and ambitious, it achieves its goal as a arcade shooter incredibly well. Mario Kart never gets me riled up like how Toy Story Mania does.

It feels more like Mario Kart than Mario Kart, ahaha. I actually want to BEAT my opponent. It being physically demanding adds to the chaos to me. And the ride vehicle has crazy whip for the kind of ride it is. It's just absolute insanity and I love it for that.

At least Mario Kart provides a unique experience that can only be found at a theme park. Rides like Mania and Web-Slingers just have you sitting in a stationary spot while staring at a screen for the majority of the ride time. There's not much that really justifies it being an attraction. If I really want to play Toy Story Mania, I can just boot up the version I have of it for the Wii, which is a very faithful recreation of what you experience on the ride.

I love MK but from a gamer perspective its much more boring from Toy Story

Toy Story literally has multiple secrets and many of which change the game bored for MK its always the same game and even when you do something like hit all the skull fish it doesn't add more enemies or something new to the next room.....same if you beat the Volcano bowser

I'd just like it where each room had some you could unlock at least....and the hidden blocks are fine but not really game changing

Another example is Shrek 4D....I love Kung Fu Panda but not going to pretend like its Dreamworks theater show is as good as Sherk 4 D....to me doesn't matter if you can do it at home to me its about what is just the better attraction in general over being exclusive

Unfortunately everyone I know says Mario Kart is underwhelming. I tried to defend the ride at first but even I see how it’s disappointing. I understand what the park was trying to do but it ended up being a miss. The ammo is WAY too limited and there’s lots of dead parts on the ride like during the underwater and cloud sections where I know people don’t have ammo or are just saving shells.

As mentioned above, you aren’t really playing against anyone DURING the ride so there’s no sense of urgency like on TSMM or Astro Blasters. You only find out your score against everyone at the end.

Also doesn’t help the ride’s slow moving queue, painful preshows, limited fov on the visors, and the ride being the advertised “E-ticket” of the new small land.

I wonder how this ride scores on the guest feedback surveys.

This not a knock on you at all, but I think part of this ride's core issue is that you're referring to experiencing it as a "playthrough," like it's a video game and not an e-ticket. I think we're far enough down the path to say that Universal just fundamentally missed the mark with this thing.
