The positive way to look at it is that Sony sees theatrical exhibition as being worth seriously investing in. That points to an anticipated health of that side of the industry.

But I know several independent/small-chain theater owners/managers, and they're not thrilled about the idea of the studios starting to muscle in.

I do want to point out....exhibition was a lot different when the paramount decree was passed compared to now. All the studios combined only owned 17% of the theatres so it wasn't a huge monopoly and the policies and decree was driven by the factors of Edgar Hoover and his hatred of Hollywood, Truman and the anti monopolistic society that exist.

With one movie ticket back then you essentially got newsreel, short films, an A film (the blockbuster movie) and a b film. That in now way compares to paying the price we pay together for way less content and time.

Theatre owners adapted and altered the cinema experience which has lead to today. They are not absolved of their own greed which created this issue as well. They devalued the experience for multiplexes, over priced concessions, and a lot of overall unique experiences and appeal to bring thes

viewers back in.

Studios being back in this business who value you their multiple lines of product maybe will put more love into this and help us get to where we need to be. Bringing in more competition would be healthy

that's true, this is an overall positive for the industry because it openly shows everyone including the industry that Sony wants to invest and keep theaters Alive and a good future investment.

Overall not surprising that Sony is the studio to buy a theater too considering they don’t have a streaming service so yeah, theatrical is certainly where they focus.

Has Disney or Universal or any other major film studio made any moves about making their own or buying a theater chain?

Its not really a very profitable industry. Plus the deals towards the studios are already extremely favorable as they have most the leverage. no reason for them to step in... yet.

Why Netflix and AMC Theatres Are Finally Getting Into Business Together for ‘KPop Demon Hunters,’ ‘Stranger Things’ and More

After years of animosity, Netflix and AMC Theatres might be reaching a détente.

Netflix and AMC are finally coming together more properly it seems for theatrical distributions, with both the David Fincher "Adventures of Cliff Booth" and Greta Gerwig's Narnia being eyed for robust theatrical runs.

This makes sense for both sides, and it was only a matter of time. So much money to be made overall.

Narnia? Are they reanimating this dead corps or do they continue the film series?

It's been announced that Greta Gerwig of Barbie fame is planning a new adaptation of the books with Netflix starting with The Magician's Nephew (the first chronological book, sixth published) in November 2026.

The Oscars is moving to YouTube in 2029! It will be airing globally for free.

This is hard

Dave has done some amazing work but then he does crap like make Sabine a Jedi and I think he is going too fan boy/fan fiction

Along with Mandalorian season 3 just being the worst season

I hope he can do it but he needs something to check him, same like Lucas needed people to stop him from doing all his crazy ideas
