I actually have hope based on the trailers that this may be the first domestically successful films based on a video game in a long, long time. The last financially successful film in the US was actually probably the original Lara Croft film, all the way back in 2001. Warcraft was moderately successful Worldwide in 2016, bringing in over $400M, but that was on a pretty sizeable budget.
No film based on a video game (that I can remember) has ever been positively received by critics, however. Even that 2001 Lara Croft movie (20% on RT).
