I think a problem Universal has in general with trying to do these monsters movies is the characters are pretty much all open domain and have been done over and over again in movies and other forms of media throughout the years.

Universal has yet to crack the code on a Monsters movie or universe that can truly stand out to call their own.

the problem is trying to make the monster the protagonist or the hero.
that dracula or tom cruise the mummy, it's kind of the same problem that Sony has with the Spider-Man villain movies. bad guys that need to be the protagonist or likable or heroic.

these are evil monsters or evil supervillains ( spiderman)
it looked like the universal planned dark universe wanted them to be superheroes.
i feel like that was the problem

it depends on the character, but they’re not all meant to be straightforward villains. some certainly are, while others are intended to be more sympathetic/tragic figures.
