I can safely say that the TMs “running” the Sailor Moon meet n’ greet at tonight’s Fan Fest (4/25) were some of the most unorganized, uninformed, unhelpful and generally aloof set of employees it has ever been my misfortune to try and communicate with in my over 3 decades of theme park visitation. Sure, Universal’s Ops have never been as good as Disney’s but man.

So, just got home... not sure how to feel, really. INSANE value for the price, especially if you only paid $40. However, the budget decrease was felt. I knew at the time not to expect anything on the level of BTTF again, but man... the drop off from that to Scooby Doo was crazy.

I loved the cast and costumes for both the Mystery Gang and Monsters, but the way it was set up just didn't really make sense. There were way too many people crammed into Little Europe, making it hard to watch the little scenes and engage with clues. They really sectioned off the Gang, making it hard to interact (especially since their mics were incredibly quiet.) The Monsters for the most part were just acting exactly how they do during day-ops, which was disappointing. They didn't interact with the Gang much. It felt kinda like... the Frozen world in Kingdom Hearts 3, where the plot of Frozen is just happening unchanged around the characters, vs previous entries where the characters directly engage with the plot, if that makes sense?

My other complaint was that you have to wait in a really slow line to see "The Big Reveal", and they don't tell you this but you aren't allowed to go back to the main area once you've seen it. I kinda get it... they don't want guests ruining the mystery, but man. I solved the Phantom Director's identity before getting off the Tram, it's not THAT serious, and they should've had a huge sign warning guests. Generally, I could just tell the budget was lower. They used a lot of projections for storytelling, which was lame, and some of the props were really cheap looking. It's okay though, I kinda get it. It was worth it to walk around Little Europe alone lol

One Piece show was insane. I loved it and I wish I could've spent more time in that area and met the characters/got food, but oh my god did it feel like walking through Rockefeller Center the week before Christmas. Good for them though. I pray this doesn't replace Water World, but they should repeat this every FFN and maybe even Mega Movie Summer (not that it would fit the theme, but who cares when it's doing this well.) I wanna see even more anime in the future, specifically Jojo and Evangelion (too bad we'll probably never get the absolutely psycho 4D show where Godzilla and King Ghidorah fight the Evas.)

Jurassic Park was a mixed bag. INCREDIBLE, 10/10 ACTORS! LOVED YOU GUYS IF YOU EVER SEE THIS! Seeing little Dolores again melted my heart, she's the only industry plant baby character I have ever or will ever fall for idc. However, the props felt really cheap and last minute. It was cool seeing the stuff up close (at least what was actually used in the movies) but it all felt kinda Downtown Disney. I know they need that spot for other things, but I honestly wish they would just redesign the space, keep the iconic gate and make that the new home for dinosaur encounters with all the original film characters roaming around.

I didn't make it to Sailor Moon, but nobody in my party was that interested. Maybe this is ignorance on my part (would like to remind everyone that I'm 19) but Sailor Moon feels like a very firmly young Gen X anime. Sure, One Piece kind of is too having started it's manga run only 5 years after SM, but the anime started in '99 and I simply don't think Sailor Moon made the same multi-generational crossover (at least in the US.) I know TONS of people my age obsessed with One Piece, but I think the only big Sailor Moon fan I've ever met is my dad's cousin in her mid 40's. Not saying it doesn't have a place at the event, just a demographic observation. It sort of filled the same demographic role as Star Trek last year, oddly enough.

Also didn't make it to Harry Potter, because it was consistently a 80-120 minute outdoor wait for an outdoor attraction and it was 58 degrees. I'm pretty disappointed because it looked great and because of that I don't think I can fully judge this years event, especially since I also skipped the DND repeat and didn't get any food. Everyone was kinda just too tired by 11:30, it was cold and Harry Potter seemed like the only must-do thing we skipped.

On the way out, the topic came up of how strange "Fan Fest Nights" is as an idea for this event. The core idea is pretty much just "HHN but happy", but making it all about celebrating strong fandoms is kind of a really limiting theme. There are only so many passionate, "convention-y" fandoms that are A: "mainstream" enough to sell tickets and drive people to show up, B: IP's accessible by Universal that fit well in a theme park while also not having permenant attractions anywhere, and C: PG/PG-13 enough to fit the vibe they're going for. I feel like they need to drop the convention vibe and just focus on that "B" if they want to continue having enough IP's year after year.

Finally, personal wishes OR ideas for series that could fit really well: BTTF 2&3, Persona, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil (as meet characters without any horror present), Avatar the Last Airbender... maybe Overwatch if it was a decade ago, Genshin Impact, Ghostbusters, E.T., Sonic the Hedgehog, Undertale/Deltarune (as like, food or something?), obviously K-Pop Demon Hunters, Invincible... that's all off the top of my head.

The Phantom Director's identity changes every night. It's possible for it to be any of the 4 suspects on a given visit.

That Sailor Moon take is wild. It’s incredibly popular still.

To be fair it’s not their fault

I was very heard a CM talking to others and they seem to be just lacking compared to other areas

Also it’s crazy they hired ONE actress for this….ONE person. So the line gets crazy because it’s so limited.

This world be ah easy fix by having two people and they switch off and the line only has to top moving for a few mins but right now this and the one piece meet and greets are such time wasters.

I’m not saying the actors aren’t Amazing but it’s like how it’s being run is to make the process as slow as possible

I wish the people making these decisions understood how popular and loved anime is.

The lack of photos being posted kind of indicates it was underwhelming.

It's all over social media? With some going viral. IDK how you can come to this conclusion...

Hahaha, well that’s why I prefaced it with “I’m 19” and “maybe I’m just being ignorant”. Just my own personal experience with the series.

I’ve heard they only have one outfit sent to Universal for Sailor so unless they get another looks like the meet and greet will be one of the longest lines of the night

Also on the note on if it’s popular, the place feels pretty packed all three nights and the lines for food never really went that down. I assume they are making good money at the very least and have no doubt year 3 is coming

I'm expecting a bigger focus on anime next year...and maybe bring the Monsters to the Parisian Courtyard?

It would certainly be good cross promotion with the movies.

One must wonder if Universal has underestimated anime IPs and their fanbases and might evolve FFN to revolve more around Japanese IPs...

I'm feeling big lizard. Who else feels big lizard?

But yeah, deeply jealous of everyone there right now. I want that damn meat on bone but all I have is the $13.99 Popeyes meal!

Also helps Evangelion is just about to get a notable hot streak of large scale content--with the Yoko Taro project and the FF14 permament alliance raid series.

I wonder who Universal went too in supplying for the costume. It's really high quality, so maybe it could be something they are renting from a japanese theater company? Shinagawa Prince Hotel has a Sailor Moon stage show--could be possible Hollywood is lending from the people who work on that one.

Not necessarily.....Universal underestimated. But its resource intensive and the states will always be behind USJ on this. Just like if they brought Genshin Impact, they would be behind USB.

The complexity of integrating Japanese IPs stems less from an IP’s popularity and more from the intricate requirements set by its owners and the relationships required. Because USJ is a significant priority for Osaka and its tourism, the city actively assists in navigating negotiations with a diverse web of stakeholders, including publishers and original creators. These relationships are vital because IP holders typically impose strict limitations on how their characters are represented; however, by fostering deep trust, the USJ team is able to leverage these partnerships to secure licenses for events like Fan-Fest in the states. While most of these collaborations at USJ are restricted to food, beverage, and 4D theater attractions, rare exceptions like Pokémon, Detective Conan, and One Piece have managed to break through those boundaries to achieve a more substantial presence in the park.

With only one 4D theatre expanding on popular IPs will be a bit harder without a proof of concept at other locations first. Like even getting One Piece in Water world was predicated by Osaka doing the one piece specular which isn't anything like the show you guys got for many years.

Then with the dub/sub issue there are even more rights and production issues for certain audiovisual presentations.

I went all three nights

Basic Idea is this

1) Get HP done at rope drop with Early access and you wont have to wait the 60-120 mins to get on it
2) Unless you have EA, I'd skip meeting Sailor Moon or the One Piece characters. Sailor moon take up t0 about 90 mins to 2 hours for most guests because of the system they have. One Piece also takes about 30 mins per set but add 15 mins for breaks and then add on the time if there is a show.
3) The Scooby area is cool but meeting the Scooby gang many times is a mess because its so crowded, so if you want to see them more and also be able to clearly see them interact with the monsters either push your way to the front and just stand there until you see or interact who you like or go later like 11 PM and after....there are normally less people and they don't kick you out until nearer to 1 AM. Security will come in and as people move to the exit they follow you and close off you re entering little Europe
4) One Piece food sometimes isn't as bad before the event starts but most of the time there is a line out the door during the event. The Show you can show up right before but you might get a bad seat and also I haven't heard its being selling out but getting near that point...the place is packed every show and to me this is the best attraction at the event so see it at least once
5) The 4 Colored Yoshis are all easy to meet, just get there and either start meeting them or wait for them to do their little dance about every 30 mins (at the spot Mario meets normally) and then go meet them. I've never had an issue meeting the 4 Yoshi's in the land within 30 mins, this area just works. You can meet Mario and Green Yoshi but the line has been too long for me to try it yet
6) The Sailor Moon show is normally 20-30 mins. It also has a last show at 1:30 AM...so if you are still in the park at most places after 1 AM should be able to make the last show since it does not start until 1:30 AM
7) D&D can be hit or miss on the times...sometimes its 30+ mins and sometimes its a walk on. It also closes at 1:30 AM but the lower lot closes about 15 mins before the closing of the event so be going downstairs at least 20ish mins before 1:30 to make sure you make it, if its your last thing you do
8) Jurassic Area is open for EA, and not to busy but nightime is the best time to be in this area for photos and the Raptor show. The Raptor show seems to happen like one an hour, same with the triceratops, so every 30 mins there should be a show in this area, along with live island music happening normally when one of the Dino shows are not going
9) Unless you don't mind missing something...don't go on rides....yes they have no waits but your enemy here is time...don't waste it on rides you can get on any day unless you want to miss exclusive stuff in the event
