The resolution with her and Aunt May was pretty great, though.

It is, but...

... there's no atonement on Jean's part. She reaches a kind of personal mini-catharsis, which is nice... for her. It doesn't do anything for the family of the guy she walked into traffic, or the thousands of people who were possessed/frozen and subsequently traumatized by missing time, or who knows who else was injured in the armored car chase at the beginning.

I'm not even saying that makes Jean irredeemable. But the movie doesn't appear to think redemption is all that necessary, and even if it did, is the X-MEN movie going to spend screentime rehashing what Jean did in BRAND NEW DAY so that we can see her become a better person? I doubt it.

Also, curious about people's thoughts on

the end titles. At first I was really disappointed but after a couple hours I could at least understand what they were going for.

My real problem with Jean is that I think the movie has a really warped moral position regarding her actions. The writing and performance really paint her as somebody who should be on Magneto's team instead of Xavier's (with her blatant disregard for innocent people), but I think the movie believes she's more justified than she really is.

Going after Damage Control? Fine. Causing harm (and probably death in at least one case) to an unlimited number of regular folks who played no part in what happened to her sister? Not fine.

Yeah, I think that's kind of the point. Jean's story is supposed to run parallel to Peter's, just from the opposite side. They're both reacting to what's happened to them differently. Peter had a compass; she didn't. The end implies she's off to find help, which we know ends up being the X-Men.

Yes, but they've got a lot of work to do to get this character to a place where I can root for her as a hero.
