I took this over the weekend, I think I had seen a similar picture and if so, they do seem to be taking their time with that one building:

They built a ramp up to the second floor so they can use a hammer on the end of the excavator but it looks like they are hand hammering it from the scaffold and the lighting inside. Maybe doing asbestos abatement before bringing it down?

Does anyone know what its purpose was before this?

It is close to the HE tracks and I am sure they do not want to impact the train during the day or ever

Ironic that Disaster!/Earthquake is being demolished at the same time as it's similarly themed competitor, Catastrophe Canyon.

Those old hollywood effects just don't play any longer in this world of cgi and instant news of world horrors. They just look cute, mechanical and stupidly short. At least that is my impression and opinion.

I think, unfortunately, that you're probably right about your assessment of how many would view that stuff. Speaking only for myself, I usually find real water, fire, spark, and mechanical effects to be more impressive than what some CGI animator can cook up (there are always exceptions, of course). That goes for both movies and theme parks.

Practical effects are starting to comeback now. The boom of CGI after Avatar really put a bad taste in audiences mouths. Hell, look at The Force Awakens. Yeah, they used some CGI certainly, but they used a ton of real props, locations and real practical effects as well (ex. - explosions).

I think you are misunderstanding what I meant by cgi. I was referring to the general public's greater understanding of how a city being destroyed looks, what a dinosaur really looks like, how bending our surrounding world in a dream might look etc.

I was not saying that a theme park should only use cgi, but more how robotics must be closer to perfection and forced perspective (twister and disaster) just doesn't "sell it" anymore.

We're impressed with London and Diagon as it is pretty darned close to full scale if not 100%.

I disagree, in The Force Awakens, they promoted how much they used real effects because the prequels use of CGI was so bad.

There's still TONS of CGI in The Force Awakens, but the technology has improved so much you can barely tell.

I think we're getting a little off topic with this but, just in case anyone didn't catch it (as it got pulled real quick from the internet) here's a visual breakdown of many of the CGI elements in the Force Awakens.

Most people don't realise this either, but John Hammond's beard in the first Jurassic Park was fully CGI.

Funny. Problem is, they had no where near solved the problems of computer generated hair in 1993.

On the terms of Practical effects/CGI Effects. Theres a need for both; in many retrospectives.

I mean hell; California's new version of SES focuses more on the practical effects, due to that CGI is common in Hollywood; just like how Practical effects were back before CGI. Sure, in a theme park; especially a simulator attraction like this or Kong for that matter; where you need to immerse the guest in the best way and shape that's possible.

Back to F&F..and to me, I see Kong being VERY telling on how they'll handle the 360 portion; as that can be the defining factor to how the new iteration of Supercharged will work, especially with it being the LARGEST showbuilding in the resort property, they have a good amount of space to have a good sized attraction, bare minding that the Line as Teebs has said in the past; is MASSIVE.

It may be me, but I have a lot of hope for this attraction, due to how well Kongs turning up; to where that's using the IP to a great advantage. And sure, F&F "could" of been a Street Racing roller coaster, that may of had mediocre capacity; but your getting a high capacity attraction possibly, with hopefully; a mix of Practical and Digital effects, making it all work the best way and shape that's all possible.

Its a rant, but F&F to me may surprise a lot of people; especially if they handle it with good care, like Kong on the conversion from the Studio Tour to a Mega-Attraction.

It's nice that Universal takes capacity into consideration with their new attractions but I rather they build something that everyone will find is worth the wait.

I know everyone seems to complain about the lack of 'fast' that will be involved in this ride, but I find the simulated feeling of speed in the chase sections of Transformers really effective. I don't see how that can't be recreated on an even better scale with this new ride.

I agree. I think they'll take what works, check customer surveys, look at what doesn't work and improve upon that, and the result will be a really good attraction with great capacity. Another aside. Teebin had said the Kong 360 screen will be smaller than Hollywood because the vehicles are smaller than the Hollywood trams, thus requiring less space. I would guess that will be the same case with F&F since they're using essentially the same vehicles as Kong. That allows even more space to use for the attraction in what already is a massive building. Universal may just end up surprising us and knocking it out of the park. And as Amityboattours said, simulated speed is effective too.

I may have missed something, but can we completely rule out that this will be a Gringotts type ride? There are very strong rumors going around backstage that we are going to see a "Gringotts 2.0" type ride system. I've heard from numerous people that this ride was redesigned late in the development period.

I heard changes were made, but man I'd be pleasantly surprised if it was to that degree.
