Guess to expand their libraries since barely anyone heard of MGM outside of their James Bond franchise.

They have a decent licensed library and they actually are able to make shows break out in the mainstream every now and then (obviously The Boys but also recently Them and Invincible). Idk if this was necessary, but I doubt Amazon will care when they're raking in the AWS cheddar.

While most of the "classic" MGM library is actually now owned by WB, MGM still controls a very solid collection of titles dating from the early 1960s onward. If the $9 billion would also include MGM's portion of the James Bond rights, and the ability to be involved with EON Productions in the franchise after NO TIME TO DIE comes out, that actually sounds like a pretty reasonable amount.

Now, I don't really want Amazon involved in the James Bond films going forward, as I don't want it to become just another "streaming" franchise, but I can see why this might look good for both parties.

Amazon is currently building a studio in LA

So they're serious about production at least

And as I see it, the MGM acquisition would give them a back catalogue as well as potential to revive IPs as long form shows

You're also acquiring 17,000 episodes of past TV shows and series

The only possible buyers were always Amazon, Netflix, Apple, and possibly Comcast. All are trying to bulk up their content libraries and want reliable franchises, of which MGM has a handful (with Bond obviously being the flagship).

The company has been all but desperately begging for someone to close a deal for the better part of a year, so someone will take them up on it sooner or later.

Netflix is not a realistic buyer. They are playing with funny money and are a company doomed to be in debt forever. Their House of Cards can’t last forever unless they find a way to be profitable.

Amazon and Apple were always going to be able to offer more and not blink an eye.

I don't disagree about Netflix, but I still think they could easily pull it off.

There's a constant pressure to create Stranger Things like phenomenons and I'm not sure Netflix can keep up with

Amazon definitely has the capital to throw at it

Knowing them, you’re probably right. Every time I feel like I’ve seen the most outrageous thing from a company throwing money around that they don’t have, they top themselves.

A lot of Wall Street analysts have said how ridiculous it is that GameStop’s stock is so high, but personally, I feel like Netflix is a very similar situation. Not quite as outrageous, but similar.

MGM is valued at most 7 billion and EON is 100% dedicated for James Bond to be a theatrical show which Amazon won't commit to which is going to hurt them. Because Amazon doesn't sell shows to outside studios, a lot of talent will also likely leave because there really is a limited audience.

Can we just get like.. a decent interface for Prime Video? It's easily the worst of any streamer.

The types of shows Amazon greenlights and continues season by season isn't what MGM Television makes. MGM television strength is game shows. Which don't necessary translate well over to long term success on streaming services.

Additonally EON the owners of the rights to MGM specifically blocked all the deals for Bond to go to streaming. It won't matter amazon owning MGM becaus EON has bigger say.

Amazon has committed fairly well to theatrical experience in past. At least up through 2019. Not even the short window like Netflix, actually keeping it in theaters for a while. I'm not sure if that's changed but I don't think that would be a deal-breaker for them.

At the end of the day, why do we care how Amazon spends their billions when this is all just a drop in the bucket to them?
