I agree about the script. The book is visually stunning, and the story is engaging (if a little obvious for a magic-oriented YA). The biggest issue that needs to be addressed is

The ending. The book ends with no resolution and an intentional cliffhanger. It’s a trend in a lot of recent “big” YA books
Knife of Never Letting Go, which Chaos Walking is based on does the same thing
but Blood and Bone was particularly egregious to me. The movie needs to have more than “block 1 checked, on to block 2.”

Perhaps the ending could be left less cliffhanger-y (since Disney has the rights to the franchise) and leave some of that for what they hope will be a second movie in Children of Vengence and Virtue. In order to get to that second movie, Disney and LucasFilm have to realize that they need to make a good movie that on it's own, earns itself a second movie by doing well at the box office.

Personally, I actually think Disney is making a mistake by making this a movie instead of a Disney+ franchise, however they inherited Children of Blood and Bone in the Fox purchase (it was to be a Fox 2000 release), so I bet there's contractual language that says this has to be a movie.

Oh, it works as a movie. There are a couple of scenes that need a movie budget (as compared to most “YA” series budgets). The only production companies I’d trust for a series version of this is HBO or Starz. Most of it could work in the same vein as Mandalorian... but there are some scenes that scream “do it practical” which wouldn’t come cheap.

I should be getting Vengeance and Virtue for Christmas, and it’ll get read. I’m interested in seeing if it goes into more interesting directions than Blood and Bone (which leaned into tropes more often than I would like).

I'm terrible when it comes to actually reading a book from start to finish, so I may just listen to the audio book for Blood and Bone.

I’m almost done (70 pages left).

It does not really go into more interesting directions. In fact, I think it relies on tropes even more than the first book.

After reading the first book, I certainly hope it's the case that the movie improves significantly on the story and tropes, because otherwise it's entering Mortal Engines territory.
