I read the review (before I caught up on the last couple dozen posts of the thread) and BlogMickey does state very fairly these are early thoughts and a review in progress and some may change. It felt like very even handed coverage and nothing felt like a hit piece.

I will always retain the belief that good faith criticism is essential to progress. If people are dismissing this because of the source, they are incorrect. I also don't think it's wrong to publish feedback about the park in its current form. Just like a video game beta, you allow theme park rehearsals explicitly for the purpose of feedback and criticism on a product that is fairly feature complete but needs polish to reach the final version. This is especially important because "They are fixing it" is NOT the same as "It is fixed" (and anyone who's ever attended a Disney park knows that). Universal may tweak up to opening day and it may be better or worse, but the issues should be pointed out so that they can be addressed. If Universal didn't want major bloggers to attend, they'd be checking IDs, confiscating phones, and having people sign ironclad NDAs like a pre-release movie.

I agree - but I still think the distinction of first thoughts would have been better as a title IMO. Putting the title as “Review”, to me, gives off the impression of something more finite; and a good chunk of folks will not read the entirety of his review, they’ll probably just go to what they’re interested in.

He may make some clarifications, but also will include statements like this: “One feeling that I couldn’t shake was how Epic Universe felt like it was 80% of the way there but not 100% yet.”

Well, yeah - because it isn’t 100%. It’s in rehearsals.

As an aside - I actually don’t believe he was invited, he was a TM’s guest. (Judging by the lack of photos and no MoM review). That’s not to discredit his points, just adding the clarification.

I think this is the most important point. Whether I agree or not with this review isn’t important. It’s putting out a review for a park that is still under TM technical rehearsals. First thoughts would be more apropos. IMO

I'll use the word "unethical" to describe posting a review for the park where the main attraction is still not fully open. And it doesn't matter how much they want to cage their impressions in the review when they still get the click for "review".

I will say, while of course it could just be a lighting difference on the camera, I watched the leaked POV and already one of the unthemed walls seemed to be covered much more, as well as some new projection mapping effects on the first Drac (the cape never appeared in any of my rides).

Also, just need to get this out there, something Unchained does exceptionally well and better than FJ is the feeling that you're the only one experiencing the events of the ride, except for the very beginning, when it actually makes sense since everyone is still on a normal tour at that point. When everything kicks in though, never once did I see any other ride vehicle, I was fully immersed in us being the only ones experiencing this chain of events, which especially for it being an always-moving ride, is extremely impressive.

That might be too harsh to label...

Universal gave the okay to review an unfinished park. They’ve made the calculation that the press will be positive enough to justify the risk of allowing an unfinished product to be seen, reviewed and photographed by media.

I really don’t think there’s anything misleading in that piece, but I also think we’re just talking semantics. Call it a review, first look, whatever. I just don’t think it’s a big deal.

Edit: Sorry! Thought they were part of the media preview. Disregard!

How I view it is if the review is to inform the public on a possible visit/purchase then wait for the final product. A review this early is preying on folks' interest and less on informing them. This view is deffinatley influenced by video game review preview/review coverage dichotomy. Harsh? Perhaps.

Everything I have seen (including the leaked POV) of Monsters Unchained has me extremely hyped for the ride and land. I love the tone, and I think it was smart for Uni to position the Monsters as a sort of big studio tentpole MCU/DCU/Star Wars adaptation. It seems very Amblin scary, where it's scary but leaning heavily into an adventure tone.

A new review I got from a friend who rode this weekend, who has been on it in Beijing, said its closest to Jurassic World Adventure for him, with more chaos. I’m curious how that fits for the other people who’ve ridden.

How's the music in the land/rides?

Entirely new stuff from Elfman, or any callbacks to the classic scores?
