My honest question is, if they don't have cohesive theming, and I mean really nail it down, then why choose it with the substantial amount of measurable downsides that continue to grow worse each passing year?

because it’s still significantly better at what it sets out to do than its competition, particularly its local competition. is it the best deal for the money? dunno! but that’s the reason to choose it.

I disagree that this is the audience they're gunning for - in fact I'd wager they're banking on the fact that they have this group locked.

HHN Unleashed in Vegas is being advertised as an all encompassing themed attraction. I think it's fair to say Universal sees it as a major strength to their event

I think if they would have leaned into the "punk" theme, it could have given the event a whole different feel. Skull punk guy could have actually been the icon - have some music based zones to wrap that all together. That along with the exact same houses, I think the event could have been much better.

So… MyX. Universal should have done a MyX year.

I think another pain point to put out there is the lack of entertainment in the queue lines. I know people have mentioned it ad nauseum at this point, but when you're in line for a house and all you get is generic HHN commercials, commercials for the other houses and advertisements for express and trivia, it's lazy and leads to a continued disjointed event. That is a quick and simple solution that could literally tie the whole event together.

But merch this year was very meh, tribute store this year was very meh, the event in general like I said before literally felt like marketing looking at numbers and spreadsheets and said "let's just do that." Lastly, HHN is absolutely missing the fun as well too. I know Bill and Ted is never coming back, but that mental break of being scared and then watching something to laugh really brought the event full circle.

Frankly, I'm glad FNaF wasn't wasted on this year. If only so I don't have to hear about how the IP "failed to support the event" in the ways it needed to, or anything like that a la Ghostbusters in 2019 and 2024.

I believe the IP lineup had little to do with the general bad taste in everyone's mouth. It probably was a factor before the event started, during the hype season the lack of exciting IP hurt my enjoyment. But once the gates opened and it became clear that Insidious was wonderful, GB was a sleeper hit, and AQP delivered on great cinematics and production value; In my mind, the answer for "Whodunnit?" has to lie with some of the other lackluster elements of the year. I don't think FNaF or Nightmare would've changed much of anything.

Another little detail that was missing was the Halloween scavenger hunt. They really just sliced away all the extras and the event suffered for it.

One new thing that did work well was the tent layout. If that’s permanent, however, they need to find a way to spruce up the long walk behind MiB. Widening the path to accommodate a genuine scarezone would be ideal but perhaps impossible, but something needs to be done to make it feel less “backstage.” The plaza at the tent choice also needs to be expanded and, at the least, a food stand added.

Sweets was a very good house, but it doesn’t change the fact that FaF is a lousy spot for a maze with all sorts of limitations. Uni needs to find a new spot for the tenth house.

Agreed, this feels like the most workable solution (though admittedly, I know space comes at a premium in that area). It would be great to be able to "hang out" for a little bit in that backstage area. Doing the long walk, waiting in line for an hour and then hiking back without a break was a chore.

Agreed on the scavenger hunt - our tradition was always to do that during the day prior to HHN.

I would LOVE if they could manage to fit a scare zone in that path back to the tents as well. Putting a food booth and a bar back there seems like a no brainer, along with some tables.

Definitely need to spruce up the walk too (add some gobo lighting, music, etc.).

If they add two more new tents back there (replacing the sprung tents), they could theoretically then build a more proper BoH access gate next to MIB restrooms that can then be utilized for the houses back there. Assuming they have 4 houses back there, they can move a few food booths back there to reduce some of the congestion points throughout the event.

I also think they need to "move" the F&F house to DreamWorks/ET. That area of the park was a ghost zone and made things worst from a crowd-dispersion metric. I think a key issue to HHN is just how crowded the NY-San Fran-London stretch is, while the other half is empty.

I'm curious how this would work. Where would you put this house?

There's that patch of land behind Trolls coaster/ET extended queue that tends to be empty with some random vehicles/parts they store there. Can easily put an additional tent structure there. I think Major Sweets proves you can fit a decent house in that space... but the actual house location is unfortunately horrendous from a crowd dispersal point of view.

I'm curious.. what was the reasoning behind no formal TV commercial? Was one even produced and then scrapped? HHN Hollywood scraped one together at the last minute but why not a traditional one?

I think they just decided to run the individual IP spots as event commercials. Jury's out whether that was successful or not.

Thread 'Halloween Horror Nights 34 (UOR) - Speculation & Rumors'

Nov 6, 2024
This thread is dedicated to all Speculation & Rumors for this year's Halloween Horror Nights 34 event at Universal Orlando.

As always, we ask that all speculation come from realistic expectations and adds to the discussion. Please keep discussions about wishful thinking/dream properties to the HHN Wish List threads. Official news will be shared on the News & Info thread.

We will be monitoring this thread very closely. We understand the appeal of a new speculation season and everyone is antsy to start talking about what's next. At the same time, we don't want the threads to devolve into...

Your annual reminder that HOTY and ZOTY have a lot more metrics that matter than what the GP thinks.
