Jurassic Park: The Ride (Now Closed)

How long til we start to see progress pics, do people think?

I keep hearing this on my YouTube comments as well, but still not sure where this information is coming from, or how it relates.

It's not like Universal will no longer be able to release a film they made and forever own the distribution rights to just because the book rights revert back to the writer's estate? The film is already made, and they own the film. So, why would they need to close the rides? Will all Jurassic Park 3 arcade games need to be removed from movie theaters across America too? All JP shirts

I'm just not sold on this explanation. In reality, the higher-ups at Universal were asking why their reinvigorated billion dollar dinosaur franchise wasn't yet represented in the parks. And here we are.

Furthermore, I still haven't been able to pin down where the rights reverting back rumor even originated, or if it's a real source or just a rumor. Seems to just be something discussed on a JP fan site, and I can't locate a news release or wiki article on it anywhere else.

Agreed.

The rumor just doesn't make sense. How can slightly changing the name avoid a rights issue? It doesn't work like that, and it's all part of the Jurassic Park franchise - Jurassic World branded or not.

It is true they used to only have the rights for six films. However, it's been YEARS since we've heard that. It's quite possible Universal has already negotiated for more films. Sherri Crichton was hanging around at the JP25 event - in fact, Colin Trevorrow introduced me to her.

I doubt Universal is letting Jurassic go anytime soon, but either way, the park rebranding isn't some sidestep of that issue.

I am guessing we'll see photos of walls up as soon as possible. Seems like they intend to put a lot of work in at a fast turnaround time, as I wouldn't be surprised if the boats get taken somewhere else as they get reworked.

Either way, I think it's safe to assume now that we can now move anything related to the new Jurassic World revamp, to it's proper thread.

Got several rides in this weekend. and 3 yesterday. Jurassic Park is such a classic that Jurassic world will never be. Yes the ride will be the same with a refresh but the context of the subtleties will not translate. Those saying that is just a refresh miss the point. But let see what's next.

Jurassic World and Fallen Kingdom are the most expensive B-Movies of all time. And I love them for what they are: cheesy, big-budget dinosaur monster movies. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Sure, Jurassic Park is cinematic gold, but there's a place for fun schlock in the world too.

I mean, it's just like the One Million Years BC remake, another wonderful dinosaur B-Movie.

Like exactly:

I'd be with you if the movies were...fun. They're not. They take themselves way too seriously. JPIII is fun schlock. JW and Fallen Kingdom think they're right up there with JP.

Nah. That moment when Owen grabs Claire and kisses her among people dying from Pterosaur attacks in the first one is pure schlock. And then for her to kiss him in the second film, just pure schlocky poetry. The films' inability to play it straight when it tries is probably my favorite part about them.

I don't want Sharknado schlock, where it's actually trying to be bad. I want a movie where to make the hyrbid dinosaur monster attack someone, you have to first aim a rifle with a laser attached to it... When, if you think about it, if you could aim a rifle at your enemy, you could just shoot them. That would be a lot easier than sicking a dinosaur monster on them. The fact that it is set up in a serious way in the film, is so breathtakingly cheesy that it's enjoyable for me.

And JP3 would've been a lot better if it has a third act, otherwise I agree, it's fun schlock. Just a bit uneven storytelling.

See but there's a difference between "bad" and "schlock". I agree that trying to be bad is cringe worthy. Schlock comes from the filmmakers having fun with their product, and the JW films just are not. They're executed in the most boring way possible, and think they're "important". See: the stupid insistence on trying and failing to make "Blue" a thing and that terribly eye-rolling brontosaurus on the pier.

I think the two movies, in the hands of better, funner filmmakers could have been really great monster movies, but IMO they stand as inert, dull pieces of work.

The ideas for the Jurassic World films have been solid. The execution within the script and tone is where it all falls apart.

That said, Jurassic World is a surprisingly fun average and occasionally flawed blockbuster. It's my third favorite Jurassic.

Fallen Kingdom is my least favorite. Its ideas may have been the most deserving of a sequel, but its structure as a film, and understanding of what made Jurassic special is quite lacking.

Welp, it’s gone. I’m glad it’ll no longer rot.

I’m sorry I just can’t feel sad over this and I’ve actually worked shifts at JPRA. It’s old and needs the upgrade despite what your feelings may be about JW. I feel like people are obsessed with the movies while the ride has very little connection with their plots.

I feel like y’all are overhyping the closure a bit. You do realize the ride itself will still be there, but it will be a whole lot better than it is now, right?

From everyone’s posts, you’re making it sound like they’re just going to tear it down.
There is absolutely no guarantee that the ride will be refurbished for the better. It is a huge question mark, like what happened with T2. Was it a bit dated? sure. Is Minion Mayhem a similar experience? You could make that argument, since both are simulations. Is Minion Mayhem a superior experience? Absolutely not. One would think that with all the updates and leaps on technology would bring us a superior ride, but minion mayhem was so underwhelming. So that is why we are so sad the ride closed because JP is so popular, it's a classic from Universal and the ride itself was also a classic, one thing Universal is really missing. You could see how many people came to the park to pay their respects to the ride. They wore JP shirts, not JW. One thing is that not everyone loved the JW movies. Have they made a lot of money? Truckloads. Does that mean they will endure and stay as relevant in 25 years as JP has? There is a huge chance that it won´t. The movie everyone comes back to is JP not Lost World or JPIII even though they were box office hits. Avatar is still the box office champ and it seems it will stay like that for many years to come, but there is absolutely no love for the movie 10+ years later. So yeah, we are sad because I great ride from a great movie is no more. Will it be the same ride? We really don't know... so in any case we said good bye like we won't see this ride anymore.

I'll take both JW and FK over JPIII, though I don't outright dislike any movie in the series. The first JURASSIC PARK is the only one that is a legitimately great film, though. The sequels are decent-to-good creature features.

JPIII's biggest problem is that it doesn't have an ending so much as it just stops.

The rights will revert back to the authors family. Universal will always keep the rights to the films because they funded those films. If Universal didn’t have Jurassic World they would of had to pay the Authors family licensing fees to keep the Jurassic Park name. This includes games, merchandise, and yes the theme park license. They will still have to do this once the rights lapse if they still want to sell JP merchandise and games. But, Universal wants to promote World because it’s new and they won’t have to pay licensing fees for the theme park rights. They will own it outright which will make them more money. Unfortunately, like I stated earlier they will have to pay for the JP merchandise rights after the 6th film.
Not sure where this info is coming from, but they would still need to pay fees because JW is not an original property, it is based on Jurassic Park so I am betting Universal won't chance a big lawsuit from Chrichton's state because the movie still says "Based on the characters created by Michael Chrichton" because that is what it is, a continuation of those stories even if they have different name (anyone that knows anything about copyright knows that you can't get away with that with just a change of names) if the info is true... we still need to see a link or article

Oh man I’m glad I’m not the only one who felt like this haha.

Some of this mourning seemed a bit much seeing as how it will be the EXACT same ride and layout just better looking dinos.

And yeah, comparing this to GotG/ToT is a really bad example. Also, I would argue that GotG is a better ride overall than ToT (at least what we had at Disneyland).
Again, absolutely no guarantee that it will be the same ride. Unless you have the plans and renders of the ride I guess that your guess is as good as mine. We said good bye to the ride because we have no idea whether it's going to be an upgrade or an absolute insult. We have to wait and see, but just in case we get a bad ride, at least be enjoyed JP while it was still open. And I disagree. ToT was a better ride

Actually... the JP The Ride concept arts show up in Jurassic Park. While I agree that the ride's storyline is not linked to the movie, what we are afraid is that they change the ride to much or, God forbid, they turn it into screens galore, or that they link the plot of JW with the new ride, or even worse, that they add Jimmy Fallon . Like Chris Pratt or Bryce Dallas Howard showing up in the story line. Again, too many question marks, but reality is that the ride closed and we have to wait. Nothing we can do now, but to mourn the ride and hope for the best

Saying not to worry about the JW redo is like telling Disney fans that ripping out the old POTC and replacing it purely with movie stuff will be better simply because it's newer. "Oh it's the same track and environments, just with updated animatronics and slightly different story." HA!

I'm sure the new JW ride may be great, but the JP ride as it was was a CLASSIC. The JW world doesn't have Dilophosaurus', for example, and that'll be missed. Or the Jeep falling sequence. Or having the T-Rex be the primary villain instead of the stupid Indo Rex or whatever it was called. Or the line, "welcome to Jurassic Park" with the same majesty. These things were iconic and instant classic moments, even back than. Nothing from the new films hold the same imagery or grabbed the emotions from the audience with the storytelling to tie them to certain scenes. The old monitors playing the classic video with Richard Attanborough will be replaced by LED screens with Bryce Dallas Howard - a huge step down.

The charm will be gone. And that's something JW does not have. The new ride will be a corporate synergy cash grab based on dollar signs and not fan enthusiasm, just like the film was. The original JP was a labor of love and ofcourse also to make money, but JW's only mission was to make money, to boost merchandise, to grab the attention of today's kids, and they thought they were being self-aware or transparent with their IndoRex being presented by Samsung crud, but instead were just embarrassing themselves. And Fallen Kingdom is a further embarrassment. Sure, they've made a loooooot of money and will continue to, but neither hold the same respect as the original JP. Not just because simply it's an older movie, but because it was a GOOD and TIMELESS movie. I have no doubt kids love JW and FK, but in 6 years time, those same kids will be pre-teens who are going to become annoying intellectuals who will start to appreciate film more and realize the "older" films were better -- and they will be right. Then they'll look back at old YouTube videos of the original attraction and talk about how they wish for simpler times.

End of the day, I'm just worried about weirdly placed giant screens instead of animatronics.

TL;DR - I think it's appropriate to mourn JP until we're given reason otherwise to believe JW will be better. Automatically assuming JW is better because it's newer means freakin' corporate won and has already succeeded in brainwashing!!! That's terrifying, man...
