Comcast goes yoink.

They’re the only ones with the capital right now.

What about Amazon or Apple? Or hell, even Facebook? You really think they have no interest?

Facebook is probably too busy playing defensive with their lawsuits moving forward to worry about additional acquisitions right now.

Amazon might be next in the congressional anti-trust lawsuits and will probably be looking to play cool & steady as to not draw any additional attention.

Apple might be a competitor... But I think if it comes down to, preserving the legacy of the studio might be better managed by another historic studio and that may be taken into account when making the final deal.

They'd be managed by a Cable company.

I think it comes down equally to either Comcast or Apple. Both have the leeway financially to do something like this; as there would be benefits for the two giants retrospectively.

I think MGM is one of two studios Universal/Comcast would fight tooth and nail to get (the other being Warner Bros.). MGM owns Bill and Ted, Poltergeist, Rocky, Legally Blonde, The Hobbit(!!!), Addams Family, Barbershop, James Bond(!!!)... They don’t have a lot, but what they have? Ooo boy. If Apple wants it, Comcast will make it a war.

Comcast won't get Warner Bros after AT&T got it for $108 million (edit: BILLION, oops) and is looking to be their chief rival as telecommunications giant.

MGM does not “Own” James Bond. They don’t have a single production credit on a Bond film until 1997 (they started distributing Bond films in 1983).

However, EON (the Wilson/Broccoli families) has all the control. They only sign short-term contracts with other production companies and have produced all except two Bond films. Many are anticipating No Time To Die is their swan song and they will look to sell EON after this, and EON controls Bond much more than MGM does.

I know. But MGM isn’t for sale until it is.

You're insane if you think AT&T is selling Warner anytime soon - especially if their day and date release strategy works out for them. On the other hand, there's been rumors of MGM wanting to explore this for years.

And have I said it’s for sale? I said MGM and WB are two studios Comcast would fight tooth and nail to acquire. MGM isn’t for sale yet. It’s a hypothetical. I could say Comcast would try to buy Disney if it was for sale it’s the same equivalent hypothetical.

Well, there was that time where Comcast DID try to buy Disney

And when MGM is enlisting advisors to explore a sale, your "hypotheticals" are not necessarily on the same footing since one is very possible and one is just not happening.

Yes, they are on the same scale. Because neither is for sale. Considering doesn’t mean selling.

I'm going to have to agree to disagree here. MGM is considering selling, meaning that Universal does actually have a chance at buying them. They don't have any chance of buying WB.

Sure, MGM hasn't flat out said that they are selling, but I don't think Fox ever actually said they were selling either, but we all knew it was a thing that was happening. Point is, there's evidence that MGM is "considering" at the very least. There's no evidence WB is. Thus, they aren't on the same scale.

MGM doesn't own as much as they used to. The classic MGM library was sold to Ted Turner years ago, and in turn was absorbed by Warner. The only "current" property they have a hand in that's worth much is James Bond, and that involves rights with others as well as MGM. Honestly there's not much worth buying there at this point.

Yup, in 1986 MGM sold their classic library to Ted Turner for $600M. Current MGM doesn't have much of interest beyond Bond and even with Bond, they don't have the whole library nor do they have any ownership of the franchise.

GoFundMGM?

Really though, they have most of their major franchises listed on their site:

MGM Studios

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) is a leading entertainment company focused on the production and global distribution of film and TV content across all platforms.
www.mgm.com www.mgm.com

Rocky (and Creed) and Bond are their big film franchises, with a few mid-tier TV series listed as well. I'd say Robocop is up there but making a Robocop remake in 2020+ would be problematic politically.
