Jungle Skip, id just go and see Rise before you keep discussing. I know you know everything that happens, but so much more is said in the execution of the film. As is every film. Films are not done and judged by plot leaks, actually see the movie dude lol.

I'm seeing it on Christmas. I'm sure it will look very pretty, but will still be as dumb as it sounds.

I want to like it. I love Star Wars.

But loving Star Wars doesn't save the prequels from being unwatchable dreck. lol

This is exactly what I thought of, as well. And I detest that element of the story equally strongly in both cases.

It's unquestionably the worst element of the movie.

Cursed Child worked simply because it was live on stage infront of you. The practical effects were, truly, magical. Out of this world tech for a play, a 2 part play, it truly felt like an event. If The Cursed Child were a film, it would most certainly NOT work. Even with the original cast as adults. The play itself just isn't very good/strong enough. Its not bad, like Rise of Skywalker bad, but it certainly isn't good either id say. That being said, the play is a must see lol. Its truly an amazing experience to watch it all in person. I really pray WB doesn't make a movie out of it.

Do you know because reddit told you? They were right on a lot, but you really need to actually see the movie to understand how mediocre/bad this trilogy is as a whole now.

TLJ sticks out like a sore thumb now - to some in a great way, to others a negative “let’s cancel him” light.

no because people who saw the film broke it down to me.

I’m sure the trilogy makes no sense now that JJ went off and pretended TLJ didn’t exist. I’ll
Probably just stop future rewatches at TLJ. Sounds like a better ending than what we got, even with the plot not technically “wrapped up”

Rían Johnson and The Last Jedi was, literally, the first (and now only) Star Wars movie I really enjoyed and found myself invested in. He did that changing a formulaic structure and introducing new ideas and more mature themes to a fairly one-note, juvenile franchise.

If that “tainted” the franchise, then I’m glad I’m not a fan.

JJ basically made a sequel to TFA here. No need to watch TLJ to understand pretty much the whole movie.

Im starting to feel Kathleen Kennedy might get the axe after this one, this film is down about 20% compared to the previous TLJ. Still making tons of $ compared to other films, but there are different expectations for these. Someone is going get the can for this, I'm not rooting for anyone to be out of the job, but its the nature of the business. This certainly didn't unit the fan base like they hoped. Absolutely mindboggling these people can't make a somewhat coherent trilogy. Just awful and makes me think I could be a film maker.

merchandising and the other stuff will probably take a big hit. Toys were already having a decline and this will not help it. I dont think so.
i think these movies have put a negative mark on all the merch from this trilogy.
Why? because it is getting hate from both sides, fans of the original movies and people that hated last jedi are hating that this movie is just a big apology letter. people are mad that things are made on the spot.
fans of the last jedi and fans of the new trilogy are furious that Rose tico was not given a lot of screen time and people are mad that JJ tried to erase what the Last jedi did.... i can't see that many people wanting to buy star wars stuff for a while lol.

I’m going to keep repeating - the original trilogy had three directors. Rian wasn’t the problem. It was the fact that he was allowed to write the story for the movie as if this was his own original film. They needed an overarching vision and they would’ve been fine.

getting directors to make movies that have an outline and have one person behind it is no problem. marvel proves that this works well.
Rian was brought back to not only direct but to help make the story.
Colin wanted to keep Luke alive for episode 9 but Kennedy didn't like that, And Rian came and got rid of Luke by the end of it. Rian was just not the director. he had a lot of input into the movie.
I remember a behind the scenes clip where the costume and set designers would mention ideas or things for specific scenes like the casino planet scenes (the way stuff could work) and Rian would say he wanted to subvert expectations and he Literally would go against what the other people would suggest. Rian literally wanted to make a movie that subverted the expectations of the audience by going the opposite way of how a star wars movie was supposed to be....

ChrisFL said:
So they hire Rian Johnson, he takes everything JJ set up and tosses it out the window and then has another director (initially Colin Trevorrow) to clean it up....yes, brilliant plan.

It would have been better if Rian was tasked with Ep 8 and 9, so at least we could get more of an idea of what he was going for by tossing out all of the ideas from Ep 7, but no, instead he's got the middle film and left another poor person to clean it up.

''

I seriously dont understand how they hired Rian for episode 8 but did not get him for episode 9 but instead they gave him his own trilogy?
how does that make sense? how is that even rational? he makes the second movie of the main Skywalker Trilogy, does not get hired for episode 9, but he gets hired for 3 more movies???? WHAT? lol.....

Nick said:
None of that was fully Rian’s fault though. Kathy wanted to give them artistic freedom instead of a rough story outline which bit them in the behind.

I know everything that's happening in TROS. I'm responding from the position RJ was in when he made TLJ. The "Palpatine's behind it all" conceit was just not a thing at the time. JJ just decided to bring him back when he came back to episode IX.

And you can be sad that Admiral Ackbar died. But holding it as some great injustice is hilarious.

Again, you can not like TLJ all you want. I'm just responding to the idea that RJ was being malicious when he made his movie. He wasn't. He was just answering the questions (of which there were NO ANSWERS at the time) the best he saw fit. People can not like it all they want, but making up this idea that RJ came in and spat in JJ's face or something just isn't true.

is not that Rian was being malicious, I don't think he made anything with that kind of mindset.
Honestly it just feels like he didn't care for The Force Awakens or didn't care for what JJ set up. it feels like Rian thought "well the Force awakens is just like a remake of a New Hope, and JJ set up all these plot points, But i think I just want to make a movie that will Subvert Expectations and not be like your typical Star wars movie"

I'm gonna be honest, I'm watching TFA right now, and a lot of things people have told me about Rise contradict things that happen in *this* movie. Like the dude just made a sequel to a movie that doesn't exist.

A lot of that is bc he knew that important things happened in TLJ and those had to be referenced (like smoke for instance), but he didn’t want to really acknowledge TLJ in any meaningful way it seems.

Snoke was always meant to be the big bad guy and snoke was set up specifically to be the new big bad guy for the trilogy

This movie is a mess because of this.

If there was one thing, maybe the main thing ruining this last movie, it was snoke.
Had snoke been left alive. A lot of the problems in here wouldnt exist.

No, if JJ hadn't ignored TLJ none of these problems would exist.

Snoke being around wouldn't have changed things from being a boring rehash of ROTJ, because that's what JJ does. He rehashes better movies.
