You'd be surprised how close they are - and the only reason is that Shrek has had more films over the years.

Are there numbers to back this up? I was under the impression it was still a fraction of the Shrek franchise.

Re: the Korea or Japan talk, I've long wanted a Godzilla attraction in a US park. I think a Japan-based land has much more of a likelihood of happening over a Korea one. I think the Pacific Rim ship has long sailed after the last movie, animated series and comics went pretty much unnoticed. I'd think Godzilla in a Tokyo land has much more of a probability of happening, depending on how the licensing issue is (not sure what company/companies are in control now) and if it's more a hassle to do it based off the Monsterverse which WB controls.

I can't imagine that we would ever see the Monsterverse featured in the Universal Parks. Universal likely does not want to promote a different version of King Kong that they do not own. If Godzilla ever does have a presence at the parks, it would probably be one of Toho's iterations of the character.

I know the point you’re driving at, but if you’re building a theme park land based around a specific culture (and any major eastern Asian city is intricately tied to that country’s culture), it’s vital that you don’t elements from a painful history that is deeply offensive to that city (and the country you’re ostensibly celebrating). San Francisco never militarily occupied LA, tortured its citizens, and try to eliminate its culture. Japan DID do that to Korea. And it’s not ancient history—the occupation ended in 1945.

You may not bat an eye at saying at referring to “Kaiju” in Pacific Rim as it relates to Seoul. Other Americans may not. Koreans absolutely would, especially when this idea already shoe-horns an American franchise (Pacific Rim - which only made $30m across both films in Korea) and an American movie (KPop Demon Hunters) owned by a Japanese company (Sony).

The histories of East Asian countries are complex and the hurt that results from that history runs bone deep. If you want a Seoul area, I recommend you find actual Korean properties to populate it with. If you prefer Japanese IPs, build Tokyo. If you like both, then build BOTH. Suggesting a hodgepodge of these ideas into an approximation of any specific location from those countries creates a perception that they’re basically interchangeable. They’re absolutely not.

All valid. All reasons why K Pop Demon Hunters should have bombed in South Korea and sparked general outrage.

On the other hand:

Kpop Demon Hunters sparks pride and approval in South Korea

There is frenzy, fascination and even a little bit of FOMO as Koreans revel in the K-pop hit.

From the article:
Part of the fandom is driven by respect. Many Koreans are wary of clumsy depictions of their country on screen, especially given how popular the culture is right now. And to have such a global hit get it wrong would have stung.

So let’s build Seoul and throw a Japanese-inspired monster in it.

Would love to hear your response to K-Pop Demon Hunters and not the word kaiju.

Look, I'm not going to die on a hill over one word being used or not.

Seoul would be a fine place to feature a large monster attraction, whether you want to call it goesu or kaiju or whatever else as to not offend, I legit don't care. Pacific Rim, The Host, something original, I also don't care what IP. What exactly goes into Seoul is less of my concern, rather the general concept of the city being added to USF to fit thematically with the other cities, that's the suggestion I'm making.

Jeez, a guy pops over from the Hollywood threads to read the Orlando threads for once and the tension is so palpable.

Well… the movie hasn’t screened in South Korea yet, according to the article. So, I can’t speak about the totality of its popularity. The article is a largely anecdotal description in how it’s drawing attention to Korean traditions and relics. The article also talks about how South Koreans appreciate that the movie takes the details of its culture seriously and accurately. Which… yeah… is exactly my point. The details—to include specific words absolutely matter.

Again, from the article:
”I've seen plenty of films and dramas that touched on Korean culture, but they were always full of errors. They would confuse it with Chinese or Japanese traditions, show actors speaking awkward Korean, and reduce everything to a shallow imitation," says Lee Yu-min, a woman in her 30s.

That's fair and makes sense. I guess dealing only with Toho instead of Toho + WB may also be cheaper and less of a hassle.

In Box Office alone (with the Broadway haul, and assuming “For Good” has the same legs as the first film) you’re looking at a Box Office of close to $3.5B; while Shrek’s 6 films are around $4B.

At this point, we're looking at 4 open areas with 4 IPs to fill them with:

Lost Continent
Springfield
2 lexpansion pads at Epic

Pokemon
Zelda
Wicked
LOTR

At this point, it's just about fitting which IP goes into which spot I think.

I think you can add Shrek to this discussion too though.

I'm not going to continue to defend the use of the word "Kaiju" any longer.

The concept of mechs fighting giant things coming out of the water (whatever you call them) however, would lend itself well to this section of the park. If you need more examples, I'll point to D.VA.

And D.VA also represents another character who is/was a cultural icon in South Korea, with no significant controversy about appropriation by the American company that created her (just you know, other unrelated controversy...).

Regarding the KPDH article, that was primarily to address this criticism regarding using an American + Japanese property, to demonstrate the appeal of the property from South Koreans. Yes it is anecdotal. But there's thousands of more anecdotes (let me know if your want all those), and eventually that qualitative data becomes quantitative. As far as I can tell, there's no significant backlash from Koreans about this IP being American or Japanese. (Also, ignore the box office because this is a Netflix movie and the fact that it has a box office at all is remarkable. We'd be looking at streaming numbers.)

Also since I brought up D.VA and Blizzard... another theme that could work well here is e-sports. I probably wouldn't suggest an entire ride (since the IP aren't big enough). But something smaller like a quick-serve might be fit well.

Still far far away from Shrek’s total though. Shrek’s franchise has about another $2 Billion from home entertainment on top of the traditional box office, and that’s not even counting all other merch/licensing. Wiki’s outdated numbers have the franchise over $6.3 B with very outdated (2010) merch numbers. If you’re looking ahead at the next movie’s projections for Wicked, you’ve gotta do the same for Shrek 5 which would easily put the franchise total between 7.5-8 B
