I think he is just in the part of his career where he can make just about anything he wants and will have full backing of the Studio and the general public. This is unbelievably awesome news. Such a departure from his last few films.

Would this be a single movie or a 2-3? Wikipedia references the story broken up in three parts:

Books 1–4: Telemachy—the story focuses on the perspective of Telemachus.
Books 9–12: Apologoi—Odysseus recalls his adventures for his Phaeacian hosts.
Book 22: Mnesterophonia ('slaughter of the suitors'; Mnesteres, 'suitors' + phónos, 'slaughter').

I'd be surprised if he did it all in one movie. A trilogy sounds nice and would make a neat collector's set once the last one comes out like the LOTR DVD sets.
