I hope this is okay to post here, but I finished up my review of night one and wanted to share with you all. There’s some hopefully helpful info here with regards to experience order and early entry benefits. Thanks and please enjoy!

I started to watch your video but saw a fair amount of footage of the attractions, which I am trying to avoid.

What tips do you have?

I highly recommend Early Entry if it’s an option for you; I started with D&D, which I figured would be popular and generally had the highest wait times through the night (~20 minutes). Star Trek and Jujutsu Kaisen came after with minimal waits and after those it was 7PM, so I went to the Hill Valley area to watch the sun set there. Nintendo isn’t worth much if you aren’t into character interactions (there’s an Egg Hunt with some interesting scavenger hunt elements) and HP monsters were on rotation so it was a little tough to figure out what was where and when. I spent most of my time in Hill Valley since I adore BttF but I felt like there was a good amount of fan-service for the other properties represented.

If there’s not much after 10 PM that really makes me wonder why they don’t just make this an event that lasts from the afternoon - 11 PM as a park closing time. Seems kind of a rip off if that’s the case.

As someone who doesn't care one bit about meet and greets or the egg hunt thing or anime, it's really setting in based on everyone's reactions that I'm essentially paying $70 for D&D, Star Trek, and Back to the Future, which'll be about two hours total based on waiting time/experience time. If all the rides are gonna be closing by 10ish, then... yeah, that sucks, when part of the incentive was also being able to ride Jurassic World at midnight, etc. Like I've said before, I want to support this sort of event from the ground floor because of its potential, but it still stings a bit.

I’m right with you as far as the interest levels in the IP, but I was under the impression that the only rides that close early are Jurassic (midnight), Harry Potter (11) and Mario Kart (10). Pets, Hippogriff, Simpsons, Despicable Me and Mummy should all be open after midnight.
With that said, I didn’t ride anything when I went and I saw about everything by 10:30, and with ride wait times the way they were I could have ridden almost everything and been done by 11:15.

I just need to find time to go, but after seeing the footage from TM preview... I'm significantly underwhelmed. BTTF being the biggest offender. Sorry, but projecting the film scene onto the courthouse is all kinds of lame. Photo-op spots are okay looking, i guess.

Star Trek should be kept for HHN & given the Borg treatment. Doing a haunt-seque walk through was a missed opportunity.

D&D is whatever. Sets look great, but if anything, it makes me miss Poseidon's Fury. I'm not familiar with the game, only the films (90s & recent)

It'll be the Jujutsu Kaisen attraction + Hogwarts Always for me & photo-op characters. Along with maybe a select few food/beverage options. Definitely need the OnePiece lunchbox & JJK plush wolves.

Ticket wise- early entry, express, & multi-night just seem unnecessary to me for this event. It doesn't offer enough to warrant the HHN style options

Can finally talk about my time during opening night after being busy these past couple days, but I'm inclined to disagree with early access being unnecessary, especially if you want to do everything and try food.

I overall had a great time and I think the event is well worth the price of admission, but there are definitely some things that might justify early access in my opinion (some of which double as things I hope they fix in the future), especially if you're going in a bit blind like I did.

Got to enter about 2 hours ahead of the event start thanks to my pass and I decided to get a quick fill of Mario Kart before seeing the opening act on the upper lot until it was time to get ahead of the waiting crowd. Then the lower lot stuff was essentially the first stop, and while D&D was smooth sailing, so was SNW until it was time for the special Yoshi line. As nice as it was to see a different color Yoshi, the line took a rather egregious amount of time (I think it was like 40 minutes?). Can't decide if that or D&D would be better to hit first if you wanna do both, especially when I don't know if lines would be better earlier or later in the night (though I had no idea they closed SNW at midnight)

Stopping for food can definitely use up your time, and I unfortunately didn't have a good experience with that when I decided to get Toadstool Cafe that night; not only was the app incorrect about reservations not being needed during FFN and had to make a reservation 30 minutes out (it was 9:30 by the time I got in), it took over 30 minutes before my food arrived, and all I ordered was the Yoshi smoothie since I had a big lunch earlier. I get if event crowds were influencing things but christ.
For that matter, I really hope it and the Alfredo are available in the daytime like the other menu items, I'll definitely plan around that when I go again if so.

It was only after that was when I was able to finally hit BTTF, and impressive and breathtaking as it was, I sadly couldn't see everything (especially the DeLorean photo op) due to being strapped for time (no pun intended), but I did see one of the lightning strikes. After that, I hit JJK with the intention to do the One Piece meet and greets after, but by then they capped the line for One Piece and that made me mentally kick myself for not doing that first and then JJK.

The last thing I was able to do was Star Trek, which left Hogsmeade ,One Piece and the Wicked M&Gs as the only big things I didn't get to do. Hogsmeade was already closed by the time we got out of Star Trek.

In short, if you're looking to do more than just the walk-throughs and main events, I'd imagine you're literally buying yourself more time with early access, daytime arrival can definitely help if you wanna try the food too, and after how my night went I don't blame the park for having (most of?) them available during regular park hours.

Aside from those hiccups, they definitely put a lot of work into this event and I really hope it thrives so that it returns next year. It's exciting to imagine what other IPs could get similar treatments.

I did get wind of this prior to seeing, and I'm personally not a fan of that choice now that I got to experience it. The subtitle placement (especially in the pre show) made it hard to keep up with what's happening on screen. Granted, I did sit in the back of one of the closer rows to try to get a more immersive vibe since there's no 3D glasses.
Anyways, I'm convinced that subbing the Japan 3/4D attractions probably just doesn't work, especially since it's live and can't be paused. They really ought to dub them and I can only hope all future ported USJ shows don't meet the same fate as JJK.

Can someone clarify - I saw the studio tour was open when I checked the app last night. Is it the full tour? I have 2pm entry (haven’t been in 8 years) so I want to prioritize riding the stuff that’s not open during fan fest.

I think your opinion of this event will vary greatly depending on what IP most captures your interest. So it's really tough to make a "this is a great event" or "this event sucks" statement. On the the whole, I really enjoyed it. But obviously, YMMV, and it's not without flaws.

I will say that all the people who went on Friday night and said everything was "dead" by 10pm were both right and wrong for Saturday night. If you looked at a wait times board, it did look very dead. Most attractions had a 5, 10, or no minute wait (the exception for me was the Jujutsu Kaisen movie, which stayed around 20-30 min most of the night, at least before 11).

But that doesn't really mean it was "dead". What the app doesn't mention is that the lines for some food venues (especially Sanji's Galley) and most character meet and greets were insane. Like, Disney Princess line insane. And while BTTF said "no wait" at 10:45, once you arrived, there were still tons of people there.

My thoughts:
  • D&D: Really enjoyed it! It did give me Poseidon's Fury vibes (obviously minus water effects and huge room). The sets were incredibly detailed. Line management, which I was worried about, was totally fine. Big issue for me was sound... it was difficult to hear some characters. Also,
I had no idea it was a huge puppet! I thought it was an animatronic . But if you look carefully, you can see two black tights legs sticking out from the bottom.
  • First Roll Tavern was fine. They wisely got rid of most of the seating, instead opting for standing tables, so people don't linger there too long. Got the Brew Fondue... the bread was "meh" but the beer cheese was really good. Wish they gave a slightly larger portion of it, though.
  • Line for Yoshi was insane at 6:30... it basically went back to the escalators. But it did seem to have died down by 8:30 or so, but I don't know for sure, because I'm not really a Yoshi/Mario person (sorry!). For what it's worth, MK did still have it's SR line open, and we literally walked right on with it. It did list a 20 min wait time, and that mainly seemed to be for the two show rooms.
  • Wicked meet and great had a line of approximately 15-20 people both times we visited, but we also noticed the characters (both of them looked incredible!) were really interacting with the guests... great when it's you, but could make for a longer wait.
  • The new Hogsmeade characters are great, just wish there was maybe one more. I did like the "new" (to Hollywood, anyway) castle show, though it's also very "best of" HP. But it didn't bother me, and I appreciated the moment where they ask you to raise you wands, and I saw all the team members participate... super cute! And not knowing what ending will happen adds a bit of suspense. I was also a bit surprised to see Ollivander's was still open, though it seemed to have no wait at all. Oh, and reservations for the Fan Fest meal at Three Broomsticks can be made either via the app (scroll dining and find the Fan Fest option--screenshot of what it looks like here), or, if you have a problem, team members with iPads outside the entrance can also help you. The have to be made same night, and cannot be made earlier.
  • BTTF... what can I say! The amount of character interaction here is unbelievable! Loved having the "Save the Clock Tower" lady right at the entrance. The Tram ride out felt a bit long, but once there, there's so much to experience, you can easily spend an hour or more taking it all in. It was like "Tamara" (a play where you walk around and follow characters in a house) meets improv meets BTTF. They are literally acting out the movie in front of you, and you can follow characters as your own whim to see their journey, as well as interact with them. They cycle repeats every 30 min or so, and is very worth your time. I've never seen a theme park get so immersive. I think this will be the smash success. The only issue is there were a LOT of people there, even at 11pm.
  • Star Trek. I actually didn't hate this as much as others have, but I can see that by comparison, it's the weakest option. That said, if it were on it's own, it'd be pretty good. I think this is the one where opinions will vary the most. Most trekkie fans I saw, and most of the GP, really liked it. If this really isn't your IP, you're not going to be as impressed. The sets look great, but bummer they couldn't do much with the celings of most spaces. And to me, the biggest problem is there's not much of a payoff. The actors do the best they can with what they were given, but there just isn't much of a plot. Spoilers to explain the "plot" and why it doesn't work:
While D&D has a great practical effect as a villain, this one just gets a blob on a screen as a villain. If there were more practical effects aside from the sets themselves, it would've been better. While I liked the "transport" smoke screen to exit, it was too little too late.
Unforutnately, I didn't get to the Jujutsu Kaisen movie this time, but we have an unlimited visit pass, so we'll return for that later.

Thanks for the details, all! I caved and watched a few videos. The BTTF stuff looks great IMO. I think that would be the only thing that really gets me to go, if I ever do. D&D looks fine, Star Trek looks...kinda hokey. So unless one of my friends is super interested and begs, I probably will just wait for next year and hope BttF returns (or something bigger goes in its place). I think the event needs 2-3 more things to make it more worth it. Early Access and FotL seem like a waste, unless you're really trying to do rides and are not a regular to the park.

I think it's a noble first attempt for this event, but I can't help think they should've tried to lock in some crazier IPs. Horror has fandoms too (a Chucky exhbit/museum with a puppet talking show?)! Action movies (Transformers is right there!), current TV shows (imagine something like Severance), etc.. Utilize Waterworld for a stunt show (even if returning Purge: Dangerous Waters), have 2 more maze-like experiences, and figure out a way to have more elaborate immersive zones.

If we had a park twice the size they could have fan fest during the day and HHN at night

I think they had to play it a bit safe for an inaugural year... though even then, they did take a few pretty big swings with BTTF and D&D!

But yeah, one other observation I had is that the lower lot definitely could've used one more dedicated Fan Fest attraction. D&D walkthrough is the big one, and I guess Yoshi. Plus Tavern. But that's basically it for the lower lot offerings, aside from a DJ booth.

I am also hearing that going forward, don't necessarily count on repeats... they may be trying to get all new properties each year going forward. So if there is a property you're on the fence about, I'd bite the bullet and just go. There's a good chance it may not be back for next year's Fan Fest. Though perhaps the runaway success of BTTF may be able to bring that one back?

One other observation is half the fun is seeing all the guests who did dress up. That really adds a lot to the event. And the blend of IPs gives a very unusual mix of costumes! It was wild to see Star Trek crew members walking next to D&D people.

I was sort of thinking that as well, but the way it's set up, it'd just be maybe 5 big rooms. Unless they decided to do the large groups thing again, you'd go through it in maybe 1 minute in basically a straight line with nearly no turns. It's not really set up in an HHN sort of way.

Yeah, absolutely this, it's basically what I was getting at and why I think early access is worth considering; you simply get to clear things out sooner and you'll probably get more breathing room for stuff not listed on the app.

Can attest, though you do get to see how Jaws looks when it's concluded operations for the day since it passes by it. Pretty interesting.

May as well throw my hat in the ring as well for what I did experience:
  • D&D, pretty much agree with, though I also thought it was hard to hear the actors at times too, same with BTTF if a huge crowd gathers. Also, considering I could never do Horror Nights, it felt amazing to walk into a part of the park you normally wouldn't be able to go to as you enter.
I actually didn't see the puppeteer legs when I first went and only then noticed the legs from camera footage I saw on social media, funny enough.
  • For SNW, I'm a bit confused on what you meant by "escalators", since I don't recall Hollywood's SNW having them. In my experience the line did get capped within minutes of Yoshi appearing in the main land.
  • BTTF is definitely one I'll be hitting early on on my second and potentially only other visit, and I appreciate the foresight on the 30 minute cycle. Is it not available during early access though? Cause I really wanna map out a plan on what's best to clear out first with early access. Even so I bet it's probably better to do the other attractions first since I'd imagine you might be spending a lot of time in Hill Valley.
  • I also thought Star Trek was the weakest for me, though I also wondered if my lack of knowledge of the IP ended up being a big factor.
You basically hit the nail hard on how the villain compares to DND's, and I think it was hard for me to understand it too, especially when it apparently seemed benevolent in the end? I'm not sure.
  • JJK was still fun in the sense of finally experiencing another 4D movie inside the DreamWorks theater and also the marvel that a USJ show can indeed be brought over to Hollywood this way. I just wish they dubbed it as I mentioned earlier. I think that's the one thing sorely missing.
And if they did dub it, I bet they could keep the mention of Universal Studios Japan jokes in the script since the series is set in Japan from what I could gather. Seeing it does make me further wonder if the Dreamworks Theater projectors can be made to support 3D glasses, because there were definitely shots made with 3D in mind, and they probably don't have the same impact when made into 2D. Wonder if it's even more noticeable if you sit further back.

Overall the response the seems pretty positive, it seems? Between here and other places. I’m going in a couple weeks — wanted to give the event time to kinda get on its legs — and getting excited. Sorta thinking I didn’t need the express tickets after reading everything, but oh well.

I mean the escalators to get to the lower lot. Like, seriously, the line went that far back.

But I basically agree with everything you said. And yeah, if you wanted to get everything done in one night, including a lot of the character meet and greets, then I do think Early Entry could be worth it. If character meet and greets are not as important to you, or you just want to do one or two, then you probably don't need it.

I think overall, the response has been pretty positive, but certainly not everything is going to satisfy every person. It's really going to depend on what you're looking forward to most. Honestly, I'm not a particular fan of ANY of these properties... but I still did enjoy myself on the whole.

And I do have to admit, all those years of HHN operations are really coming into play. On the whole, ops are pretty good. And it's impressive how much infrastructure was invested on this initial outing... from merch, to signage, to new purple team member robes, to purple carpet, graphics on the wait time boards, music playlists, etc..

It will be interesting to see if they do anything to better deal with the overwhelming Yoshi demand, though.... to me, that seemed to be the roughest ops (as you can see in the pic!). But I don't know if USH was prepared for that level of response. Hopefully, they maybe reassess a better way to handle that.

I'm curious if this also means SNW will no longer be an uncharge come HHN..

Good lord. Seeing people waiting hours just to take a picture with Yoshi makes me wonder how much the house wait times at HHN would go down if that event had meet and greets that could suck people up like that, too.

Been on the belief for a while that SS12 should enter from the backstage gate of SNW ala how Potter is to H-Lot. Have to imagine we are inching to that being a probable reality for this year with Jurassic.

I have to think BTTF will be a fixture of the event. It seems like a very easy win to have a TT-Esque experience that unlike TT, could operate all throughout the night without any concern or issues. Alternatively maybe instead of BTTF, perhaps Jaws?
