As Potter has become synonymous with Universal parks I wonder if the public would be dissatisfied if it opened with no Potter?

Harry Potter?

Pretty sure Universal has no interest in building a nostalgia park.

I’ve always thought Narnia would be a good IP to turn into a themed area. Not really sure if it’s in the public consciousness anymore though even if it is a British IP.

Netflix have the rights atm and should (although they’re taking their time) be rebooting it with new movies/tv shows.

If we were able to bluesky anything into existence, I would want His Dark Materials in there. Sadly I know this is unlikely as although the series adaptation did well enough, I don't think it set the world alight.

Animatronic Panserbjørn bears on some kind of boat ride would make my head explode.

I'd bring up my opinion on the Wizarding World's absence in this new Park, but uhhhh I fear it would not go over well, so I'll just say I really hope Middle Earth is in this new park!!!

I'm sure there will be some kids and some families who will be a bit disappointed if there's no Potter in the parks, my family will be, but if they can't get the rights they can't get the rights. That disappointment will be tempered to a significant extent if what else is in the park is truly world class.

Orlando last year in May, my first trip to Diagon Alley and Hogsmead.

I asked my child what he thought of Diagon Alley, and he said “it’s alright, it’s really good, but I’ve been to the REAL one on my school trip where they filmed it.”

Equally, he loved Hogsmead because of the snowy roofs, but I personally thought it didn’t feel quite right in 34° weather seeing snow blanketed roof tops. But was still really good.

Sorry to hear you’re a Daily Mail reader Rob mate.

Here’s one of their excellent columnists who ironically lives in Florida making sad words when this was all announced. Sent by a friend of course.

I skimmed it just now. Seems like some tired old knobend complaining about how terrible everything is. Mostly nonsensical. Twat.

Seems like an odd joke, quite passive aggressive. You don’t need to read the Mail to know what it is like, but in a previous job I had to follow its coverage of education through a press cutting service so I am more than familiar with its agenda, including when it covered my work.

But maybe best to leave the Mail out of this thread? It really is completely unrelated to Universal Great Britain. I’m not sure why the rag got dragged in to our discussion in the first place.

I’m sorry Rob, I was only joking. It was your mentioning of JK Rowland in the Mail. I genuinely thought the Daily Mail being quite poor was a running joke.

You are quite right, I have derailed this discussion and would like to apologise.

Your input so far into this discussion has been excellent, well informed, and much appreciated.

Apologies again.

Thanks, no apology necessary, just a slightly unnecessary diversion from our agonising wait…

That’s very well put.

I took a walk down the Universal South Parcel this afternoon, and sadly nothing to report.

Other than I noticed the south-south parcel is very flat, but as I approached Manor Road it got a bit steeper. Natural small subtle hills.

Lots of dragon flies, butterflies, dried clay, and trenches. No Kawasakis today sadly, all very quiet.

But it is genuinely a lovely spot. They’ve got some great land to work with.

I’m curious to see what the summer month temperatures here will be if they build it for 2030.

Look y’all I’m not a local, but man does LOTR fit your area in Bedford PERFECTLY. I hope that happens for this resort if no Potter is allowed. Oz would also fit amazingly.

Unfortunately I’m not made of money, but both of those would make me consider a trip to experience them.

While idling away the time waiting for any new information I have been looking a little into SDO special development orders, which Universal have indicated may be the route they go for planning permission.
Basically, the Government have the right to raise a Statutory Instrument in Parliament, which, if unopposed, will automatically become law. There is a list of current and past SI s at this location https://statutoryinstruments.parliament.uk/ and, if you can be asked to look, you will find some previous SIs relating to other developments.
I am not sure if we will also see anything on the Bedford Council planning portal, I guess it will depend on whether the Gov agree to go down the SDO route. I suspect Universal had been doing a lot of behind the scenes stuff and had some confidence the Gov would get on board and support such an order.
I am getting slightly itchy feet now awaiting any further updates. As mentioned by yepthatguy, there is nothing going on at the site at the moment, I drive by regularly and have seen no activity.

Universal state on their Project website that the government, if they proceed with a Special Development Order, will have a public consultation on Universal’s planning application and Environmental Statement. So while we might not see anything on Bedford’s planning portal, we might see something outlined when the Department for Levelling Up goes to a public consultation. As this kind of development is unprecedented in terms of the government approving a SDO it’s difficult to know what level of detail will be available for public consultation.

While it will be good to see an indication of the plans in a public consultation, the downside is that the timetable for completing the Statutory Instrument process might be difficult to complete before a likely general election in the autumn, as I suggested in this post, and this post.
