Yeah. All that stuff they use could be easily googled.

Honestly it’s not same versus seeing in person.

Why wouldn’t you want to go and see the source material instead just googling random images ?

Disney has the money to spend on its workers and I don’t see the issue with that.

It's a bit different yes....but more extravagant than needed. It's not like the Imagineers get low level salaries like the CM's get paid.

are you suggesting the imagineers should … pay for their own research trips? come on now, lmao.

Yeah… the issue with Google is that you can only see what you can find. If you’re researching an aesthetic, a lot of times, you don’t know what you need to see… what you can see… until you actually see it.

I assure you, Universal pays for research trips as well. The quirk is that, for a lot of Universal’s research, it’s for American cities or for places that don’t explicitly feel like “research.” Universal also doesn’t draw attention to a lot of the work. Disney draws a ton of attention to it.

If I was Bruce Vaughn, I'd save a ton of money by just having the imagineers use chatgpt only. Universal's already on that forefront and it's amazing: see Zelda World concept art posted last week.

Villainsland could really benefit from the otherworldly images artificial intelligence tends to dabble in. The engineers can now be the rockstar imagineers

For anyone wondering, these Imagineering Trips are just a myth making marketing strategy. It's for the appearance mainly. It so Disney fans have lore to share. That's not how they actually design attractions.

I agree with this to an extent.

These trips are more for the land aesthetics versus actual attractions.

Honestly the issue with WDI spending is more the quantity of people versus the activities those people are doing. Even the efficiency team is overstaffed.

I distinctly remember them making a big show of the research trips they did for Revenge of the Mummy (though, perhaps ironically, those were mostly to the British Museum). They absolutely do it.

I love the stupid field trips, and really how much is a $100,000 trip for 10 really going to impact the budget of a $200-500m attraction? If there's one thing I got from this trip it's that Dark Universe threw them for a loop and they might be looking to go more gothic than originally intended, yay!

What an incredible irony. McKinsey sucks and Chapek looking to bring them in was a canary in the coal mine of incompetence, but man this is what happens when your incentives for the division are based on projects! Ahhhhhh!

In the defense of theme park design teams and money spent on culture immersion trips,

If they are planning to take elements from certain areas, unlike google images, those trips allow them a way to play in the sandbox so to speak. They can feel the texture of the bricks and mortar, they can see the details up close you can't see. They can get the vibes and smells of certain areas. Its easy to say just bring one person but one person isn't doing all the design its the team so all of them being present and doing their thing pays off for creating truly immersive environments and inspiration for changes they can make.

I did a tour of all things Gaudi while in Barcelona.
Pictures/Videos do no justice whatsoever.
This is not a picture of the Mona Lisa where there is only one way to see it and you will only ever gleam that same amount of information no matter how great the best camera in the world taking the photograph of it is. This is a lived in, three-dimensional space that you have to walk through to see certain things the way they were physically intended to be witnessed. For the Disney people designing a lived in, three-dimensional space that is going to be sought out by just as many -if not MORE- people, it makes perfect sense that they'd want to go and see and feel these places themselves.

This is one of the Disney expenses we should be applauding, not dismissing.
We wouldn't have gotten Animal Kingdom without trips like this - who knows what else.

They probably spend 3x as much hosting influencers at media events and trips.
