Marvel Studios to Skip Comic-Con's Hall H This Year (Exclusive)

The studio will still have a presence on the convention floor
www.thewrap.com www.thewrap.com

As a seeming result of the WGA strike and impending SAG-AFTRA strike, it seems Disney, Universal, and WBD are beginning to pull their studios from SDCC.

SDCC was packed last year. Tough break, but people will always show up for SDCC. It's sold out with or without those presentations. Hall H is so small (compared to the size of the event) that only about <5% of SDCC attendees can get in the room anyway.

Hollywood Actors Extend Contract Talks at Deadline

Their union, SAG-AFTRA, and the major studios pushed the expiration date ahead to July 12 and will keep negotiating.
www.nytimes.com www.nytimes.com

excerpt:

A second strike by the actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA, the industry’s largest labor organization, would essentially shut Hollywood down.

Should the actors go on strike, they and writers would be together on the picket lines for the first time since 1960. The actors last went on strike for a significant period in 1980, when they were out for three months.

SAG-AFTRA Prepares Hollywood Publicists for Strike (EXCLUSIVE)

Publicists representing the biggest stars in Hollywood were briefed by SAG-AFTRA on Monday about a looming strike.

SAG-AFTRA Strike Could Hinge On AI; Deep Divisions Remain Between Actors & Studios In Final Hours Of Talks

As talks between actors union SAG-AFTRA and the studios come to down to the final days, artificial intelligence has become a significant obstacle to any deal.
deadline.com deadline.com

“The agreement with the DGA is a good basis for discussion,” a streamer exec said of the deal for AI “consultation” the guild made with the AMPTP and overwhelmingly ratified last month. “This is a town [built] on relationships. Only the whackjobs want to blow this up; they’re the ones stopping a deal,” he asserted.

Super weird how the machiavellian keeper test/"taste cluster" people suddenly care about relationships.

All of it has been because big corporations suck. Would you like it if there was a job taken from you because the company decided it be better if they used AI? Sort of like the Grand Moff Tarkin and Leia situation in Rogue One. Doing that takes away opportunities for other actors.

What is trying to be prevented here is something like, say... Lucasfilm doing something like an Indy D+ show, setting it during 1936, and using the AI appearance of a bunch of the cast of Raiders and making a show where the cast is almost almost fully made up of AI driven portrayals with body doubles doing the movements.

I honestly kinda hope a strike happens. Let all of Hollywood shut down. How long do you actually think that would last? It's bad enough for studios that they don't have any writers. To have their casts taken away for projects currently being filmed would just be insult to injury, and the injury is their fault.

Insane. I fully expect SAG to strike with the two sides not seeming like they are anywhere close at this point.

I just don’t get it

They really want everything shut down this long? With how summer films are doing it’s even weirder

This is all about using plagiarism bots AI learning language models to completely subvert labor and have next to zero cost for studios.

This is late stage capital ripping the copper out of the walls to maximize short term profits even if it decimates future ability to do the same.

It’s insane because we are close but still need a few more years to work out the kinks

It’s just insane they won’t meet with anyone

It will never be able to replace writers because LLMs and other generative algorithms cannot truly create, only rehash content. It can be excused or overlooked for a while but everything will start to look and feel the exact same after a certain point, particularly as its used to generate mass culture media.

It’s not insane, this is the end goal of capitalism. If you can eliminate all costs while maintaining profits you’d do it. SAG is/will be striking over similar issues with AI replacement of actors using deepfakes ala “Joan is Awful”

It’s all very grim and I have nothing but solidarity for the guilds. Execs need to be taken down a few dozen pegs

Side note: Ironically execs are the groups most replaceable with AI/LLM due to the ability to rapidly parse datasets and “make decisions” from disparate inputs lol.

AI Bots also don't have human experiences to draw from, so that would just make everything even more generic than it already is.
