I think a problem Universal has in general with trying to do these monsters movies is the characters are pretty much all open domain and have been done over and over again in movies and other forms of media throughout the years.

Universal has yet to crack the code on a Monsters movie or universe that can truly stand out to call their own.

the problem is trying to make the monster the protagonist or the hero.
that dracula or tom cruise the mummy, it's kind of the same problem that Sony has with the Spider-Man villain movies. bad guys that need to be the protagonist or likable or heroic.

these are evil monsters or evil supervillains ( spiderman)
it looked like the universal planned dark universe wanted them to be superheroes.
i feel like that was the problem

1. It’s not Talbot.
2. It’s a Wolf Man, not The Wolf Man.

it depends on the character, but they’re not all meant to be straightforward villains. some certainly are, while others are intended to be more sympathetic/tragic figures.

yeah I know, when I wrote that I thought that wolf man is more tragic.
but dark universe with Russell Crowe was trying to do dark superhero stuff lol

So before this comes out...do we want these kinda morden day twists on characters?

Because I am really wanting something that looks and feels more old school......Were Wolf at night as an example of a modern day more simple monster story

If you made me choose, I'd want gothic, period-set horror films featuring these characters, in the style of the 2010 WOLF MAN remake.

That said, I thought Whannell's INVISIBLE MAN was great. I'm open to modern-set stories (especially for something like CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, which -- once you're out in the jungle, visibly away from the modern world -- would still have an old-fashioned flavor to it). But I do think you run the risk of re-inventing the characters so much that they're functionally no longer really the characters at all.

I loved that 2010 wolfman movie so much I even got the action figure for it. it was amazing in theaters. I vividly remember it, it was such an amazing experience. the look of it, the make up, the sets, the really amazing soundtrack, the brutality of the wolfman,
I was excited to see it but the movie turned out to be better than I expected. it had such a great cast.
it felt so awesome to see that transformation in theaters, one of my favorite experiences

I know that people criticize the plot and the editing as well as the CGI on it, I know that there's a different director's cut that fixes some of the plot problems. but I loved seeing the wolfman creature in theaters so much.

but to answer your question yes, I prefer movies like the 90s mummy or wolfman or 90s dracula than modern ones. dracula is another visually incredible movie.

I think the difference in interest between Nosferatu and Wolf Man are telling, even if I wished Nosferatu was maybe a little less stringently tied to the plot of the original Dracula novel.

I think it is and it isn't. It's very faithful to the spirit and tone of DRACULA (more than most official adaptations), and I think it gets its version of several characters very right relative to the text, but there are still some major elements of the novel that are missing (like the whole third act of the book, which turns into a race back to Castle Dracula).

But even so, DRACULA is like HAMLET or MACBETH or A CHRISTMAS CAROL; it's a durable and enduring story, and the fun of getting a new adaptation comes from seeing what a filmmaker can do with it, visually.

I can dig it. Reminds me A LOT of the original 1941 film look/design.

I still don't like the look of that design at all, but I'm trying very hard to keep an open mind.
