Splash Mountain is not based off of a movie or any cartoons ever created by Disney just look through their catalogs there is no such thing as those characters. Not to mention that Zippity Doo Dah SONG they play has never been a part OF any of their movies. It is a fun ride and I enjoy THE way that they have entire story head SOUTH in it.

Actually it is.

Splash Mountain is a log flume-style dark ride at Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland, and the Magic Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort, based on the characters, stories, and songs from the 1946 Disney film Song of the South. Although there are variations in the story and features between the three locations, each installation begins with a peaceful outdoor float-through that leads to indoor dark ride segments, with a climactic steep drop into a "briar patch" followed by an indoor finale. The drop is 53 feet.

I just recently started becoming a way bigger Disney fan that Universal fan, not because all the rides are better, just because of that Disney feeling. I love being able to drive around or take a bus and always be in another world, something I'll probably never be able to explain. When it comes to new rides, I don't freak out too much, because after you ride it once it's not the same the second time around. It's easy to see Universal is doing WAY more, but Disney also knows they don't have to, their fan base has been long established, and every American family probably knows about Disney World, not to mention many foreign countries as well. I wish Disney did add more, and was more loyal to their pass holders, but that's not enough to stop me from going. And it's easy to see why veterans are tired of it, I just started going regularly, and in 30 years I'll probably be done with it if nothing changes too. Honestly maybe Disney just wants to fix their infrastructure problems before they add a host of new attractions to bring a lot more people in. They've added a lot since first opening, and maybe they realize they NEED to slow it down.

With all that being said, why can't people be allowed to have their opinions without being attacked for them? Who cares if Disney does target kids, obviously it worked for them. And I like the "kiddie" rides and animated movies. But some people are so cynical towards the other side, and this goes for both Disney and Universal fans. SOME fans, not all.

The problem is that ALL WDW has going for it is "the feeling" which I still get to this day and living in Miami I have annual passes to both parks right now. But as an adult I love becoming a kid again on their rides, but I also hate the lack of innovation and drive. I went to DLC last year and not only did I have that childlike wonderment, but I was also excited.

Its just crazy that their FL has something like 20+ rides and ours has like 8 or 9 only. Granted some of their rides are SUPER kiddie rides, but I didn't have one wait over 10 minutes there, where a ride like Peter Pan here is constantly 45+.

Sorry it was a joke, look at my capitalization. I'm constantly frustrated that I can't go out and buy Song of the South which was a movie I enjoyed a lot and won a lot of praise because it has been locked in the Disney vault for the past 25 years or so, yet its fine for them to have major attractions based on it. I just got finished reading the book Who's Afraid of the Song of the South, which was a pretty decent book and talks a lot about the controversy.

Didn't mean to start another fire storm here, ^THIS^ was mostly what I was trying to say. And, by the way, take it from someone who has been going to Disney with his entire extended family from the time he was a baby (and whose grandfather actually helped build the place) Disney, including Magic Kingdom, hasn't always been targeted toward just 'families with young children'. That is a more recent development and not what helped Disney get to their current popularity level either. Trust me here, my grandfather could see it even more glaringly than I could the last time he was there. If that was the case, why did they host Grad Night there?

I understand that Disney wishes to put their characters into their rides but I completely agree with Disneyhead here too. Half ass refurbishing an attraction all ages could enjoy to sloppily put in cartoon characters, that don't even fit with the original ride theme half the time, to make it appeal really only to younger children now is a lazy move. Personally I see it for what it is, Disney trying to avoid building new quality attractions and the general 'kiddie-fying' (or a better word perhaps, dumbing down) of the parks. Its not just at MK either, look at Epcot. What happened to all the history/education based rides there. Universe of Energy, dumbed downed with Eleen. The Mexico boat ride, I still can't believe the country of Mexico would be okay with what they did there. The GM ride showing the history of the automobile, becomes a 'mock' thrill ride. Body Wars pavilion, axed entirely. The list goes on. I fear what they may do to my beloved Maelstrom next! I'd be fine if they were adding toddler friendly attractions (along with new family/adult ones too, of course. Or doing quality refurbs to older rides) but replacing good existing attractions for ones aimed really only towards children, and building nothing new in most instances, seems like a mistake in my mind. Especially when you consider that the parents have to bring the children there. If it ends up where adults have absolutely nothing at all to interest them there (NOT that it is completely like that yet, I'm not saying that, but it seems to be heading that direction more and more) do you really see a lot of people spending entire days, not to mention multiple days, when only the kids have anything at all to do? I know parents love their children and all, but throwing away their entire vacation to go to a kid's mecca doesn't sound like a relaxing time for any parent! Again, I'm NOT say that's how it is now, only that (god forbid) this appears to be Disney's new 'direction'.

Maybe Disney feels all they need to appeal to is children (or people with a toddler level of intelligence) now, but they are alienating a sizable part of their fan base in the process. With that said, believe it or not, I am a Disney fan and have been since a child. I still go to the parks, but nowhere near as much as I did even 5-10 years ago; and none of the rest of my family ever go any more; including my brothers, sisters, and friends (even the ones with young kids). I just feel like Disney is making it harder and harder for me to be on their side every time I go to a park. If you ask me their movies are more enjoyable to a wider audience than most of the attractions they've added/refurbed since Everest. Just my opinion though...

You guys go and have fun. WDW is still an amazing place (because of what those before the current management has done). It's just not a place that I have any desire to pay the prices they are asking for what they are serving anymore. I have been going for 42 years and the lack of new compelling attractions, decades old entertainment, and slacking maintenance (moldy monorails, a Future World badly in need of a good power washing, and broken effects in their attractions) makes it anything but magical.

^That's all true, and Disney should get called out on it. But calling out the people who do enjoy it, and belittling their opinions because of what they enjoy...that's what's uncool. I don't think people enjoy being described as "wetting themselves" because they get excited for a new attraction at Disney that someone else might not particularly enjoy. I personally don't go to Disney as often as Universal, and their latest offerings don't necessarily cater to me specifically, but I can appreciate that a different audience might be satisfied with Disney in its current state. And seeing my little girls happy doing things they like at Disney is more exciting to me than the latest and greatest technology Universal can offer.

I don't want to be labeled as a Pixie Duster or anything like that...I still wish Disney was a little more forward-thinking and enjoy my time at Universal immensely. I just view the two parks as different things, which is what they're meant to be.

My favorite part of Disney currently, are the fireworks. I own an annual pass and pretty much the only time I visit the park is so I can see either Illuminations or Wishes. Both are incredible shows.

I have no desire to argue the fact that both shows should be updated, but I still enjoy going to the park for a couple hours, riding some classics and finishing my night off with some incredible fireworks. In that aspect, my annual pass is worth it. Too, they throw some kick ass events such as Food and Wine that are worth attending.

The whole Universal vs. Disney is unbelievably stupid. I get it...Universal is currently innovating and Disney isn't doing ****. It only needs to be said once. Enjoy all the parks and what they have to offer. After all, Universal probably wouldn't be where they are without Disney.

For 15 years (about 8 years ago) I frequently went to all the parks in Orlando. I loved them all. I loved going on Kong and ET, riding Splash Mountain and do all the fun stuff. Bet then things went wrong at Disney. New rides like Mission Space and Soarin where nice tech demo's but lacked story and fun. Remakes like the replacements of Alien Encounter and (my favourite) the Living Seas killed my enjoyment for the attraction. Then taking stuff away (skyway, life pavilion) replacing it with nothing and keeping asking more money became harder to support.
Then Universal started building and when I came out of their rides I really had that "wow" feeling like I once had when I entered Splash or went on Alien. We sold our home before the crash and relocated back to the Netherland and now every 2 or 3 years we come to visit our friends in Orlando but I have no desire to visit Disney anymore. I don't want to support them with my money because I can't get behind what they are doing. I hope full hardy things will change and Disney will become once again the company that makes world class rides like Splash or Tower or Haunted but for now that kind of quality world class rides are build by Universal and that's where my money is going.

That doesn't say the 7DMY doesn't look nice (it does) but why build such an expensive, low capacity ride in your best visited park when so much could be done to the Studios or Epcot or AK...

Like usual, the original arguement gets lost in all the debating.

I agree that Magic Kingdom caters to young children, and families. I also agree that Fantasyland is a huge part of that.
What I don't agree with is that Disney World (as in the entire resort) is only appealing to 4-10 year olds. (which is what was said)
Furhtermore, I also don't agree that the Magic Kingdom ONLY appeals to this demographic.

Which is what caused my response. It's not opinion, it's a false statement, as there are no absolutes when it comes to opinions.

Would it be fair for me to say that Universal is ONLY enjoyed by Potter fans? Or Teenage Boys? No. It's the same type of statement. Just because something doesn't appeal to you, doesn't mean it won't appeal to someone else.

And on the larger scale/"real world"...the mass majority of people (who don't post on Orlando message boards, or go to the parks more then once or twice a week, year, decade, or lifetime) would agree that it appeals to a lot of people.

The problem with these message boards is that quite a few people take there personal opinions and apply them to everyone else, and those that disagree with said opinion are considered "less than". which is just wrong in my opinion.

I am happy to be one of the few that sticks up for Disney around here, as my last two visits to the park were "MAGIC". But I have a 3 almost 4 year old daughter, and that's to be expected.

I still love all theme park info and disucssion. I went to UOR the year it opened. I went to IOA the year it opened. There is no doubt that UOR has a lot to offer. but as I said earlier, things are not black or white. There is no real reason to "Hate" anything about Disney, if you dislike the park, jut don't go.

Problem solved.

There is a very silly catch 22 dilema that Disney has itself in...first of all WDI charges way too much to do an attraction..but that is besides the point...New Fantasyland cost way too much, but what do you expect when Disney builds nothing new and this is the only project in Orlando...I would have charged them out the butt too

I'm more of a Dodge Ram kind of guy. If I go to Ford truck forum I'm pretty sure I'm going to read anti Chevy, Dodge, and Toyota based opinions. The same can be said for a Disney forum. I've been a member on WDWMagic for 8 years, long before many, and I can assure you the level of Universal bashing and labeling over the years is well beyond what you will find here. I've read comments about how the bathrooms in Fantasyland were better themed than Hogsmeade overall and how Universal has no heart, no magical atmosphere. Do I agree with that, no lol of course not. But I knew going in to that forum I was gonna read some crazy crap (in my eyes) about peoples perspectives.

Long story short my point being is that this is a Universal focused board so there are going to be certain comments made that some will not agree with and that's fine conversation is great! The main thing is for everyone to keep their cool, understand that some have preferences big and small, and realize that no matter how many times they make the same point it won't matter to a few.

With that being said I'm going to do two things for ALL of us. One being is ask everyone stop the Disney vs Universal arguing here and continue it in another thread I'll link in a few minutes. This thread is about the FLE and with the Dwarves coaster finally opening in the next couple of months it's time we really focus on the closing piece of this expansion. The second is for everyone to be respectful to their opinions and viewpoints. No need to be condescending, rude, or in any way be disrespectful to someone's opinions or personal experiences.

Can we all agree on just getting along and understanding that some opinions are merely opinions and not written in stone? This is aimed at everyone, including myself, who yes has a bias. All I want is for this to stop here and then be carried out in an appropriate thread where valid points, and respectful opinions, stories, experiences, viewpoints, and disagreements can be made.

After watching that video I was surprised that they have the full on dark ride on the inside, it appears there isn't a whole lot of room for that coaster and having that long of a slow section I think would make it feel pretty disjointed and even shorter than I already thought.

I didnt see an opening date going back several pages, so I will just ask. When is the ride supposed to open? Heading down the end of May and am hoping it will be open by then. By the looks of the video Mike posted, seems like its close.
