Casting rumors:

Contenders in the running for the lead role of Star-Lord include Wes Bentley, Chris Lowell, Cam Gigandet, Michael Rosenbaum, Jim Sturgess, Zachary Levi, and John Krasinski. For Drax the Destroyer, Isaiah Mustafa, Brian Patrick Wade, and Dave Bautista are supposedly being looked at by Marvel. Finally, in somewhat worrying news, Marvel is rumored to be looking at Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler to take on the roles of Groot or Rocket Raccoon (characters most likely to be motion capture driven).

Cosmic Book News posted a rumor regarding Thanos......

Now we learn that not only will the Mad Titan Thanos be featured in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie — but The Avengers 2 as well.

We previously reported that Thanos creator Jim Starlin was in talks with Marvel about "something," with it theorized that it was over the rights to Thanos.

Now, a Cosmic Book News regular, Armand Rock, has confirmed through Jim Starlin that Thanos will be in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie and The Avengers 2.

Armand Rock attended the recent Montreal Comic-Con and spoke with Jim Starlin who said that the deal is already in place. Jim Starlin even mentioned that Thanos will appear in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie in 2014 and The Avengers 2 in 2015.

The news is not that surprising, as most assumed Thanos would go on to become the Avengers major villain in The Avengers 2, but what it may reveal is that there might be another villain in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige talked to MTV about the Thanos rumors......

"There's a great track record now about lobbing something in at the last moment to get the audience buzzing," Marvel's Kevin Feige told MTV News about the secret villain tucked into the ending of "The Avengers," which hits Blu-ray and DVD on September 25. "Particularly when it came to Thanos, [we knew] that most people in that audience had no idea who that purple guy was — but they could clearly tell he was important, and knew if they asked the two or three people sitting next to them, somebody would know who he was."

The exact trajectory of where Thanos goes from here isn't entirely known, but most fans feel it's all but certain that the Mad Titan will appear in "Guardians of the Galaxy," going on to serve as the major villain of Joss Whedon's "Avengers" sequel. Feige's lips are sealed when it comes to the particulars, but he's quick to add that there is a very clear plan in place for Thanos' next appearance.

"Clearly, there's a purpose to us putting him in the end of that movie. We do have plans for him," said Feige. "I wouldn't say we ever feel the need to rush anything one way or the other. We succeeded in Phase One because we stuck to our guns and stuck to the plan. That plan took place over many, many years and it ultimately paid off. I see Phase Two unfolding in the same way of us taking our time, us doing what's right for each individual movie, while folding in elements that will not only build up to the culmination of Phase Two, but even Phase Three."

Wherever Thanos shows up next, he might look significantly different from his first appearance. Asked if Marvel feels married to the casting of Damion Poitier, the actor behind Thanos in the "Avengers" stinger, Feige said, "I think we feel pretty free to recast. That was cast for literally that one shot. Depending on what the role requires from future movies, we'll go from there."

For now, Feige and Marvel are happy enough to see that Thanos has caught on not just with deep-cut comic book fans, but complete newcomers as well.

"Suddenly, you have a million people who had never heard of an Infinity Gauntlet or a Mad Titan learning those terms," said Feige. "I love that. I love when the experience goes beyond the movie theater and encourages people to look deeper into our universe."

Latino Review posted a rumor that the film will focus on the three more humanoid characters of the GOTG team.....

This just in, there are three characters on the Guardians who are drawing most of the focus “at the moment:” Star-Lord, Gamora and Drax The Destroyer. These three characters are getting visual and backstory updates to meld them into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and going off the plot we already know ( “a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.”), it’s easy to see how Star-Lord, Peter Quill, will hijack his way into space and meet up with the roving future Guardians.

Gamora and Drax getting the highlight treatment over Rocket Raccoon and Groot makes sense since the traditional backstories for both of those characters tie them to ‘Guardians’ and ‘Avengers 2′ villain Thanos (Gamora was adopted by Thanos and Drax was a man whose consciousness was transferred into the Drax body with the express purpose to kill the Mad Titan at the behest of Kronos). Also, Rocket Racoon and Groot are not humanoid characters, so – yeah – it’ll probably be easy not to focus on them

Basically, look for these backstories to get re-tooled and these costumes to be updated.

Latino Review also posted a rumor about how Iron Man 3 will connect to Guardians of the Galaxy. It's somewhat spoilery, so click the spoiler tag to view it......

According to sources, at the end of Iron Man 3, Tony actually does go up into space to hook up with the Guardians of The Galaxy where I also hear he appears at the end of that movie as well.

So the answer is yes, Tony does go into Deep Space and hooks up with that Guardians. Hat tip to Mike Sampson over at Screencrush, Germain Lussier over at Slashfilm & Spencer Perry over at Superhero Hype for guessing correctly.

Like I said last week, toy companies have a habit of spoiling plot points of upcoming superhero hero films. Here is your example.

Also if you haven’t noticed, here is another hint, Tony Stark is currently starring in the Marvel NOW! Guardians of the Galaxy comic book.

So there you have it.

I don't know why you'd worry about a screen capped Jim Carrey. I don't know a lot about the role, but he's definitely got the chops to pull something great off. I highly doubt they'd do Sandler. That would be shocking at this from Marvel.

Casting news from Deadline.....

Chris Pratt Getting ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Lead

igpv8tzrTnNrE.jpg

EXCLUSIVE: After a long search, Marvel Studios has found its lead for its next big superhero franchise, the James Gunn-directed Guardians Of The Galaxy. I hear the role will go to Chris Pratt, the Moneyball star who bulked up and played one of the hero Navy SEALs in Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty. The role is Star-Lord, the Guardians leader who is the offspring of a human mother and an alien father. A puffier Pratt plays Andy Dwyer on the NBC series Parks And Recreation. He certainly has the charisma to hold the screen.

Marvel had made test deals with Zero Dark Thirty‘s Joel Edgerton, Boardwalk Empire‘s Jack Huston, Cloud Atlas‘ Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace (who has roles in both Lincoln and The Hobbit), and Eddie Redmayne from Les Miserables. More recently, Zachary Levi was identified as a candidate. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was pursued, but he has other plans. An August 1, 2014 release date for the pic is planned.

Guardians Of The Galaxy first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1969 but didn’t get its own series until the 1990s. Star-Lord (real name Peter Quill) leads a group of alien superheros who team to protect the solar system from an evil alien race. The good guys are from the future, and another dimension. In the comics, the Guardians worked with The Avengers, so there should be opportunities to use Marvel’s big franchises to help launch the new one. That gives Disney a deep space companion to its plans to resuscitate Star Wars. Forgive the sacrilege, JJ Abrams, but I’m kind of more excited about this one than a Star Wars rehash.

Pratt is repped by CAA and Mosaic.

Speaking to Cinema Blend about The Avengers' Oscar nomination for visual effects, Marvel Studios Executive Producer Victoria Alonso mentioned how pre-production VFX work is coming along for Guardians of the Galaxy's Summer 2013 shooting schedule, and how tricky some characters are to portray considering one in a talking raccoon and another is a living tree.....

Cinema Blend: Before I go, I do want to ask about the future of Marvel.

Victoria Alonso: The future is bright! [laughs]

Cinema Blend: Obviously all of the films in Phase Two are going to have a significant visual effects element, but the one I am beyond curious about Guardians of the Galaxy. I know production is going to start this summer…

Victoria Alonso: Production has already started! Completely. It started months ago and we have an entire team in London already – we start shooting in June. Our director [James Gunn] travels next week and it’s going, baby! It’s a fast train to a beautiful place.

Cinema Blend: What makes me fascinated by the project is that you have five members of this team, and one of them is Rocket Raccoon, a talking raccoon, and another one is Groot, who is quite literally a walking tree. You’re obviously not putting a person in a costume for those parts. Are those going to be fully CG characters? Are there plans to use motion capture again?

Victoria Alonso: We’re going to do a combination. You can’t do any motion capture with a raccoon – they won’t let you put the suit on [laughs]. But we will do rotomation, probably, for some of the behavior. Rocket will have his own personality, of course, and clearly we can’t do mocap on a tree, per say, but we definitely will have performers to emulate what James Gunn will lead to be the behavior and the performance. He’s very clear on where he wants to take the characters.

Casting rumor from Collider

Jason Momoa in Talks to Play Drax the Destroyer in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY? [Updated]

i3T6gugwO6W2n.jpg

With Chris Pratt now set in the lead role of Star-Lord, it looks like casting is moving right along on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Writer/director James Gunn has now posted up in London to continue pre-production on the film with shooting set to begin in a couple of months, and now a new report has surfaced claiming that Gunn and Marvel have settled on the actor that will play Drax the Destroyer. The character is one of brawn, and he actually began life as a human before his family was attacked and killed by the ubervillain Thanos, after which his spirit was placed in a new, much more powerful body. Rumor has it that none other than Khal Drogo himself, Jason Momoa, will bring Drax to life.

[Update: Borys Kit of THR Tweets that his sources tell him Momoa only tested for the role and has not received an offer for the part:

iPJtq2tvbI0C0.png

He followed up by saying this doesn't mean Momoa won't end up being their guy, but he has yet to receive an official offer. Hopefully we hear one way or the other soon. Our original story follows below.]

The folks over at Latino Review (who posted a killer Star Wars scoop earlier today) report that negotiations have begun with Momoa to take on the role of Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy. Apparently the actor flew out to London earlier this week to test for the role, but his audition went so well that he was subsequently offered the part. Also reportedly in the running for the role were Isiah Mustafa, David Bautista, and Brian Patrick.

Negotiations are said to be ongoing and nothing has been confirmed, but Momoa seems a fine fit. Though the film was a box office disappointment, the actor has experience as the lead in a large-scale adventure pic with the Conan the Barbarian reboot. He also memorably played Khal Drogo on HBO’s Game of Thrones, and earned notice as one of the only good things about last month’s Sylvester Stallone actioner Bullet to the Head.

We recently learned that Marvel will be using a heavy amount of visual effects to bring two other Guardians members to life—the giant tree Groot and the talking raccoon Rocket Raccoon—so if Momoa does indeed sign on as Drax, that leaves the female lead of Gamora as the last remaining live-action role to fill on the Guardians team. The film’s villain is rumored to be Thanos, but we’ve yet to hear any casting mumurs for that part. With production set to begin soon, look for more news in the coming weeks. Guardians of the Galaxy opens in 3D on August 1, 2014.

From Comic Book Movie

James Gunn Meets With DnA On GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

This news should bode well for fans of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning's(DnA) epic run on the Marvel cosmic line. Director James Gunn has revealed that he's recently met with the pair at Marvel's UK production offices for GotG.

James Gunn has apparently met with Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning to discuss The Guardians of the Galaxy. The comic book duo were responsible for such noted arcs as Annihilation: Conquest and War of Kings and are credited with reinvigorating Marvel's cosmic characters in the late 2000's.

Are they just visiting or will they be consulting with Gunn on the film? I can't think of better brains for Gunn to pick when it comes to the GotG.

I don't think the GOTG will be defeated. I do think they will beat Thanos, with the after the credits scene being Thanos retrieving the Infinity Gauntlet, causing him to be a whole lot more dangerous.

I gotta say I wasn't sure what to expect, but reviews of the panel and footage at SDCC has me very excited to get a look at what they're doing. I love everything I'm hearing except a bald Karen Gillan.

Trust in James Gunn. BTW, bald Karen Gillan is still really attractive. I'm weirdly the most excited for this Marvel film. Should be ridiculous, hilarious and fun! Marvel makes the fun movies while DC turns Superman into a Debbie Downer.

She will always be beautiful, but that's still a crime to chop that off  I wasn't sure what to think of Pratt, but it sounds like he's got it nailed down. I'm still more excited for Winter Solider, but this definitely has shot up my list.

Definitely loved that line-up art they posted over the weekend. Just waiting to see who's voicing the Racoon, and where does Vin Diesel play into all this.

So I'm not gonna bother posting the trailer, because I'm sure we've all been bathing in its glory the last few days. But I had to share this quote from James Gunn.

here is no doubt that the cinematic pinnacle of my career is our cameras circling around a maniacal raccoon shooting a machine gun on the back of a living tree.
And I say this with as much modesty as I can muster – because certainly it is not me, but the hand of God guiding us all as we make this film – but it just may be the pinnacle of cinema in general.

James Gunn should be in charge of all movies ever.

This has been my most anticipated marvel movie since it was announced... and remains so. Using "Hooked on a Feeling" to underscore some anthropomorphic raccoon action is just demented bliss.

So I went into this movie knowing absolutely nothing. Totally blown away.

SUCH a fun movie. It's not as good as X-Men or Captain America, but honestly it was probably the most fun I had at the movies this year. The characters were fantastic. Chris Pratt was awesome. Groot and Rocket were absolutely hilarious. Just such a fun movie.

And the soundtrack >>>>>

Enjoyed this a lot. I knew nothing about these characters going in, and they were all great. Batista especially was good because except for The Rock, wrestlers don't have a good track record in movies. Rocket was great as well. One of those characters you wish was on screen all the time and when he is you can't help but be amused. Haven't seen much of Chris Pratt aside from his small role in Moneyball and a few episodes of Parks and Rec. He was great too, hope to see him get more lead roles soon

Also, I can't wait to see Thanos mess stuff up. That little tease was great and he looks great

This completely! Wasn't quite up to the incredible quality of X-Men or Cap (and that isn't a negative statement), still a ton of fun. I actually loved all 4 superhero movies this year (I know I may stand in the minority with Spider-Man). This entire season has been amazing at the movies, and I'm still looking forward to TMNT, Expendables and Sin City over the next few weeks.

1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier---10/10
2. X-Men: Days pf Future Past---9.5/10
3. Guardians of the Galaxy---9/10
4. The Amazing Spider-Man 2---9/10

I was disappointed with the end credits scene. Was hoping for something to tease Avengers or the next Guardians. Maybe something with Thanos. But I guess it's ok since some people are getting a kick out of it

Least favorite Marvel movie so far.
Worst after credit scene ever, and a total waste of Stan Lee's cameo
