There were propless scarezones for the first decade+ of the event. 2 zones without props won't kill the event.

Touché! I'm still hoping we get props in those zones, though!

Just from the looks of it, it does appear to be a very packed event.

I really don't see how anyone would fall on the "hate" side of things. Things are different...but looks to be a more fulfilling event (despite being only 7 houses, most attendees probably still wont go in every house).

I can see how people fall in the hate category. I fall in the cautious side of things. If the theme turns out to be walking dead I am not going to be a big supporter of that decision. I'd rather have an icon that plays a small role like Lady Luck instead of an advertisement tag that really doesn't play into what looks to be the biggest part of the event this year, scarezones. And I'm really not that excited for any of the houses other then AC only because of how great it was and I know that Universal will improve it for some way in Orlando. And don't think that because I'm not excited for these houses, I still have a lot of hope that they will be able to scare me in big ways. And that's where the haters come in, they don't share the optimism that I have in the back of my mind and see this change as definite bad.

I can say I am not a fan of IPs, but I will wait and see, they did such a great job on their houses last year IMO

Ok, I have a dumb question. What is an "IP"? I see lots of people refer to IP's in that they want more, they are not fans, etc.... I feel like I should know what this is as I've been going to HHN since the 90's!

Intellectual property. Used to denote anything that's not Universal created/from the entertainment world.

for example The Walking Dead is an IP. As Is Silent Hill.
Alice Cooper and Penn & Teller are IPs to a lesser extent.

People are unhappy about those because they strip HHN from some originality. Like TWD maze is going to be based on TWD so really Uni didn't create it.
This year I think SH and TWD are the only true houses that deny Universal creativity, but everyone freaks out about the 4 (more than half) IP houses!!!!
I base what lacks originality by people going into the house with expectations of what to see, something they recognize. SH has pyramid head that everyone expects to see, TWD has the Well Zombie and other scenes from the show. People (fans) of the Property will expect to see things a certain way...limiting the input UNI has on costuming/sets and whatnot.

Alice I dont think is a truly restricting IP. It is understandably getting some flack as it is a re-hash of the house in Hollywood last year. I still think the house is original as it is mostly based on Music and his stage act. People might go in with some expectations...but they probably don't have a mental picture of what exactly the sets/costumes will look like. Giving Uni creativity. I do understand the unhappiness with this house as a repeated house, but I bet most attendees won't even know it was used at Hollywood last year.

As far as I can tell Penn & Teller is essentially an original maze. Created by Universal Creative, they made a premise, costumes, sets...they just wanted a Vegas Act to be a part of the fun. I'm sure P&T had some input, I'm sure they'll appear in the maze to some degree...but this maze looks to be original.

All 4 are technically IP houses. Only 3 mazes are truly unoriginal. 2 because they are designed to look like something specific, 1 because it is an import from another park.

were people annoyed with Poe last year? It is technically an IP

Poe was done by Uni and BGT and is public domain.

It's an IP house in the sense that all of the scenes are inspired by another source. Complete with the expectations that go along with it. I was actually going to make this same argument.

Getting nitpicky here, but all things are "inspired by another source". Corinthian columns were inspired by another source. IP's used here really mean any commercially pertinent franchise that has a name and continues to be a big financially viable product.

Sure, but I guess it comes down to how much inspiration came from the source. We'll take Poe and Catacombs for example.

Catacombs was inspired by the events of the Black Plague, and UC created their interpretation of the plague.
Poe was inspired by the literary works of Poe, and how UC made those pages come to life in their eyes; which in my eyes, is an IP.

Everything is inspired by something. The IP argument gets old to me personally. People Under the Stairs, Psycho, Crypt Keeper, Classic Monsters, etc. All that was used in the first 5 years of the event.

Well Hollywood announced they are getting a Classic Monster house with a twist. I don't mind a "remix", but dubstep?????? I really hope this isn't coming to FL.

Dubstep + Monsters = pulse-pounding horror! Introducing, 'Universal Monsters Remix' at this year's event!

That's just for the House of Horrors overlay. It's not what I'd call a "real" house. Sounds to me like the normal House of Horrors with music and strobes.

I'm a big EDM fan but that just sounds like Hollywood is trying too hard to jump on what's popular at the moment. Was is the House of Horrors?

The House of Horrors is a permanent haunt that gets a light overlay every year. They don't do a massive overlay because it would be expensive and because they need to use it during the day (we have VERY few attractions out here). So the interior is already themed and themed pretty well... but it's pretty much the same every year. This year they sound like they're aware that it's almost useless to try to do a "theme" and now are trying to change up the perception of the interior with the strobes and music.

And I'll still be skipping it this year
