Now, the countdown was a ridiculously bad move that will garner negative feelings from a lot of fans.UOTE]

Who will all still probably be at the event shoveling drink money to Uni for 95% of the event nights.

It's only a bad move if people stop showing up, and we've seen no evidence of that year after year as the fans continue to bemoan the "Worst marketing ever."

I would take Ifrit more seriously had he posted that before the countdown hit zero....

Oh, I know. I'm firmly in the "don't like it, don't go" camp. But eventually, the fans who aren't pure masochist will stop going. Their replacements will have been identified and indoctrinated by that point. But crapping on fans isn't sustainable.

I am all for the sweepstakes. I think it's fantastic. It didn't need a countdown.

Remember HHN25 where they had a countdown along with teasers on the way there, on that day when the countdown was over they announced the Originals, Scare Zones, and Shows so they kept their word and everyone was excited and happy. I remember that.

Announce IP to get those who travel from out of state booking rooms (AHS and Shining). That what drives growth now. UOR thinks and probably sees that having info out in August and September brings in the locals.

If I'm not mistaken didn't they say that was for the full reveal?

At least Murdy interacts with the fans on Twitter. It's like dead on Orlando's Twitter.

It's definitely not worst marketing ever - but marketing in general has had a rough year.

I think it shows a lack of understanding from knowing their audience. You've conditioned these hardcore fans for years now with HHN teases during the summer. Whether it was intricate website backstories and games, to just straight up "this is what you're getting". Like many have said, the worst thing they did was put a countdown clock. The GP wouldn't look twice at the clock.

I dunno if I'd go so far as call this "crapping on fans". Fans ask for it themselves by thinking everything is a clue that points to the next announcement

What do you mean "kept their word"? When did Universal ever tell you the countdown was to a "full reveal"?

They very much hyped it up back then to be a full reveal. I was believing that they would do the same today but they didn't. It shows a lot of the issues I have with this year.

They never did say it would be a full reveal but when you hype it up and say a number of days until a Announcement of sorts people are gonna get excited.

They did have announcement today, it just wasn't the one me and many others were seeking (Well I don't anyone wanted to wait a Month for this announcement). They kept their word.

Yes, but Uni has conditioned a certain type of fan behavior with their past practices. Fans didn't simply develop their assumptions out of thin air, they based them on past experience. Having and valuing that experience is part of what makes "fans."

Dismissing fans in favor of first-timers is exactly the mistake WDW is making at the moment. It works for a time, maybe a long time, but eventually collapses. And there is absolutely no reason you can't appeal to both fans and first-timers - in fact, that's marketing's job. They're doing it very poorly.

As a "fan" all I care about is one thing:

"Is the event good?"

The marketing could be a homeless guy with a sign stapled to his back wandering around Orlando for all I care.

I may have a pretty different opinion than most, but I think on the whole Universal's marketing has been knocking it out of the park lately.

Just keep in mind, their bottom line is making money... not just money but more money, and the more people that become die hards is just a group of people that they don't have to target at all any more. Like has been said already. They already have most of our money for HHN, sure HoS has been gaining some ground but HHN is the de facto Horror Event on the west and east coasts. If you haven't been you need to go and look at this super keen sweepstakes to keep your eye daily on while they announce the rest of the event.

I could go into my thoughts more but honestly I don't want to bum myself and others out more.

The marketing is part of the event. And in the best years - for instance, the Usher's year or Bloody Mary's year - a key part.

This coming from the same guy who chastises Universal about holding onto announcements close to the vest instead of starting the hype train?

The idea that you don't have to continue to cultivate fans is nuts. What do you think one of the primary motivations behind comic-con is? (yes, this has shifted somewhat as comic-con has become a major media event, but it is still an element.)
