Got into the Christmas spirit on this Black Friday morning... with TERRIFIER 3!

It's a frustrating movie, because you can see that the pieces of a much better film are here, but they’re marred by some unfortunate missteps.

Primarily, the ever-present fixation on the prolonged suffering of Art’s victims really inhibits the ability to appreciate what are, conceptually, some pretty inventive and impressive kill sequences. In the hands of a young Sam Raimi or a young Peter Jackson, this stuff would be a delight, but here, it mostly just feels like an overly mean-spirited bummer.

It’s too bad that director Damien Leone has allowed this to become a major feature of these movies, because there is quite good technical work here, and there are some risky, bold choices that most mainstream films would be unwilling to explore, which is neat (again... conceptually). Character work is unexpectedly thoughtful, and Lauren LaVera gives a legitimately good performance, earning her place as one of the genre’s better final girls (certainly recently, anyway). The Christmas setting has a retro, cozy vibe that’s a nice pivot away from the Halloween flavor of the previous movie.

But it’s just not a lot of fun, and if you want to make these dark ingredients work, a certain deftness and lightness of touch is required that the movie doesn’t provide.

I skimmed through part 3 and it finally hit me why I'm not a fan of the franchise: it's quite literally the Monty Python Black Knight joke over.... and over... and over... and over...

How the second and third films are both over two hours long is beyond me. And it's such a waste of a good horror icon, IMO, because Thornton IS great in the role. I really think Damien Leone is the main culprit behind the films not landing with me. But hey, I'm sure he's the reason it does land for others.

finally watched In a Violent Nature and am not a fan. effectively a pastiche of friday the 13th but with an even grimmer, more serious tone and with a much worse pace. I like some of the ideas, but I’m well past the point where I find a cypher mindlessly finding increasingly brutal ways to murder people remotely interesting.

Smile 2 is on Paramount+ now for anyone interested that hasn’t seen it yet. I really enjoyed it—the pop star angle added a fun touch to the story.

For as little as I've enjoyed the Smile films, the ending of 2 could lead to something great but I have serious doubts the next one won't just focus on some other random occurrence with the creature. Hope I'm wrong!

The only reason to do a third is if you're jumping off the ending of the second.

Very excited for Nosferatu.

Planning to get in a watch of Black Christmas, Gremlins and Krampus before Christmas comes.

I can defend the 2006 version only in this sense: the Christmas atmosphere is great, and it's mean-spirited and gross in a way that I'd enjoy... if it wasn't a BLACK CHRISTMAS remake. But it is, so I don't.

Its biggest mistake is providing a concrete backstory for the killer.

AAAABSOLUTELY

To this day the phone calls in the 1974 version make my skin crawl. The calls in 2006 are so unbelievably lame in comparison
