Saw two werewolf movies over last week; The Howling and Wolf (1994) starring Jack Nicholson.

The Howling is a serviceable flick with a great transformation scene like AWIL. I was interested in seeing Wolf after comparisons to Coppola’s Dracula and Branagh’s Frankenstein; I don’t get it (considering it’s modern and not based on a novel), but the story and characters were interesting. The makeup was lackluster though, and if you’ve seen Batman movies, it’s a little weird seeing the Joker and Catwoman getting it on.

Re: the makeup in WOLF, supposedly two factors influenced it:

1. Jack Nicholson wanted to remain (more or less) recognizable.
2. Rick Baker wanted to pay homage to Jack Pierce's WEREWOLF OF LONDON makeup design:

the script for wolf changed a lot and the ending changed a few, they kept going back and forth on how much realism or fantasy to put on it

Oddity

3.5/5

A slow burn with an interesting premise and twist that shocked me a little. That wooden statue is pure nightmare fuel.

Terrifier 3 is a large step up from the previous installment. This go-round, we actually have a plot, the screenplay is pretty solid, and every character is well-written and likable.

You know how the colors of Christmas are red and green? Well, Terrifier 3 says "Screw green, it's all about the red, baby"! Every single kill scene plays like the filmmakers asked themselves how they could one-up the bedroom slaughter from Terrifier 2. Oh yes, Terrifier 3 aggressively pushes the boundaries of good taste. This is easily the meanest, most brutal, bloodiest, and goriest Christmas horror film I've seen in a long time. There's also a decent amount of sacrilegious imagery. For me, every single kill after the opening scene floored me in both good and bad ways. I'm tempted to call Terrifier 3 transgressive, that's how intense this flick gets.

Lauren LaVera remains one of the great final girls of modern horror. She's actually better in this than she was in the previous outing.. LaVera has a lot to play with here, and she impresses. David Howard Thornton has always been iconic as Art, but this is easily his best turn as the character yet. He's still very scary and very funny.

Unfortunately, not all is shiny and bright with Terrifier 3. Yes, this flick does A LOT right...but it's still not without its flaws. First off: The way Terrifier 3 handles the Jonathan character might piss many fans off. Secondly: Those walking in hoping for answers to questions raised during Terrifier 2 are going to be disappointed. The Clown Cafe plays no role here except for two brief callbacks. There's also no explanation as to how The Terrifier is important in all of this. A tiny bit of lore is added, but it's not much. Terrifier 3 seems to be more focused on the film at hand than on setting up future pieces, which is a good thing (duh).

Likely my biggest complaint with Terrifier 3 is its ending. This flick feels bombastic and excessive with how many kills occur and with the manner in which each victim is killed. So it's a bit disappointing when it all leads to an ellipsis or a cliffhanger. I can also understand the kind of thinking that led Damien Leone and crew to leave the character of Sienna where they choose to leave her, but it still feels a bit edgelord. Dark and mean just for the sake of being dark and mean. The finale is appropriately brutal and savage, but surprisingly small scale. It’s effective and tense, but can’t quite match the setting of the Terrifier in Terrifier 2.

Horror films aren't supposed to appeal to mass audiences. They're supposed to shock you, scare you, piss you off. They're supposed to challenge you and make you uncomfortable, maybe even make you sick. Horror films push boundaries. Terrifier 3 understands this. There's a lot here that's going to anger or offend many, and that's a good thing. Terrifier 3 is easily the best of the Terrifier trilogy. It's also one of the greatest/best horror films of 2024. This one leaves a mark.

You're going to be waiting a long time then. Hearing a lot of great things about Terrifier 3 and a fourth installment was already announced.

I prefer not to wish for the end of an indie franchise that is finally seeing great success tbh. Not sure about you, but Art the Clown is def a modern slasher in my book. M3GAN and John Carver are great, but Art is leagues above them.

This isn't even remotely true. It's possible to push boundaries and appeal to wide audiences; at no point have those things proved mutually exclusive. Horror movies have been appealing to wide, mainstream audiences for more than a hundred years. Universal Studios owes their entire existence to the popularity of the genre. And those movies might seem dated and old-fashioned now, but at the time? They pushed boundaries.

Here's the best way I can sum up my feelings on Terrifier (and yes, I've seen all three of them): When I was a kid in the mid-90s (like 8 or 9), I was at a sleepover with like three other boys my age and we watched the original NOES. First horror movie any of us had ever seen, and we lost our minds. After the movie, we started talking about all the other horror VHS boxes we'd seen at the rental store. None of us had actually watched those movies yet, but we were so caught up in the adrenaline from NOES that we got carried away describing them. Like someone would go "I heard in Candyman, the bad guy poisons little kids with candy." And then not to be outdone, someone else would go "I saw Hellraiser, and there's a part where the bad guy shoots nails out of his head and it kills a naked girl and there's all this blood everywhere." Each kid had to one-up the next kid, until we just straight up inventing movies that didn't even exist because we wanted to come up with the goriest thing we could think of.

That's Terrifier. There's nothing inherently original or creative about it. (And reminder, I've seen all three.) It's just a litmus test for gore hounds. And that's fine, there's obviously a place for this kind of stuff and I'm glad people enjoy it, but at the same time Terrifier fans think too highly of themselves. When something is trying so hard to be transgressive, it kinda negates the quality of actually being transgressive, and the whole thing just comes across as the invention of some dweeby kid at a sleepover trying to sound as edgy as possible.

i just wish they spent as much time doing a good story than they do with the gore, people would say to me "its low budget shock gore what did you expect" but budget or shock gore shouldnt take away from a better movie.
terrifier is like a cannibal corpse music album, and yeah i get the shock aspect, yeah its "so brutal bro" but i wish they did better. gore for the sake of gore gets boring.
terrifier is like a movie made by 4chan or something lol.

It's like this: When I was a kid, back when I had literally only seen one horror movie, I thought the thing that made horror "horror" was extreme violence. Any concept of style, form, creativity, or narrative theme was completely unknown to me. I think Terrifier is proof that some people -- grown adults -- appear to still think this way. So the entire thing just strikes me as juvenile.
