Protagonist falls in love with captive marine creature they can only speak to through hand gestures, but creature will die if they stay in captivity so protagonist sacrifices their love and happiness to free the creature.

Which movie am I talking about?

Okay but there's a physical aspect to their relationship in Shape of Water that doesn't exist in Free Willy.

When I think Free Creature, I think a kid friendly "Boy and his Monster" adventure movie. Shape of Water is a great little movie but there's room for a take that goes in a more family oriented direction.

I get where you're going with this but the depiction of platonic love (Free Willy) and romantic love (Shape of Water) is a pretty important distinction, no? Thematically, and, uh, otherwise.

After hearing much about it via following the HHN17 website constantly, I finally got around to watching Dead Silence. It's one of those horror movies that's insanely frustrating because it has some legit very scary parts
mainly, what she did to the heckler's body has stayed with me the last few days and is the main reason I wanted to bring it up
and a great gothic atmosphere throughout, but it gets bogged down by monster "mechanics" that make zero sense and stupid characters by even horror movie standards
why would you scream when you KNOW the freaking nursery rhyme?!

Leigh Whannell famously disavowed the movie in a fiery rant posted to his personal Internet blog (not sure if that's archived anywhere). He basically admits he hated working in the studio system and that the notes he was forced to try and implement (reading between the lines, probably some of these monster mechanics) were awful. He also implies an uncredited writer got the script over the finish line. Amusingly enough, I recall reading a comment from Michael Aiello, who expressed his admiration for the film despite its faults and shared that he loved using it as the basis for the 2007 haunted house.

I fully agree with you, though. It's bursting with brilliant atmosphere and features a terrific villain, but it gets very bogged down with convoluted plotting and baffling character decisions. Wan directs the hell out of it, though, and that's enough to make it a semi-regular watch for me.

this movie really demonstrates how talented a director Wan is. he has such a distinct style that breaks through even the most studio-afflicted crap.

I actually love the plot for Dead Silence. I didn't know that the movie had problems filming.

when I saw it I really loved everything about it. I loved the plot. I loved the actors. I loved the sets, I love the mystery. I loved the puppets.
I really loved the detective because he goes from antagonist to the main guy to helpful and supportive character. ( I really LOVED THAT)

I loved the twist ending. it was really surprising. I loved the backstory. even if the studio ruined it, I loved it all.
reminded me of another movie with problematic shooting called DARKNESS FALLS ( basically same premise)

DARKNESS FALLS is one of the greatest theater experiences I ever had. most people don't like the movie.

but in theaters it felt like a horror ride. it literally felt like a screen theme park ride. I also love darkness falls just because of how amazingly they handle the tooth fairy.

their tooth fairy with the porcelain mask and long capes looked amazing on screen. the sound system with the tooth fairy moaning was incredibly terrifying in the theater.

Terrifier 3 is technically well-composed. The effects are solid, the movie looks professionally shot, the performances are given some genuine care and effort. I enjoyed a good number of scenes, even some gorier ones. There's an extent to where seeing simplistic character stereotypes like preppy college kids, drunk gruff bar guys, etc dealing with an onslaught of creative violence can be a fun time. Especially with the goofy slapstick-y performance from Art, it gives the scenes a campy feel that can be entertaining and interesting in it's own ways, even if it's still not my favorite thing ever.

I just had no fun in the third act of this film. Art wasn't doing anything fun or creative. The kills got excessively, needlessly cruel and dark against characters who had been developed into actual people and not stereotypes. The main antagonist was just boring and edgelord-y, and again, needlessly cruel. It lingered in weird places,
I just don't see any reason to sit with the sobbing child begging for her dead mother for as long as they did. I just found nothing fun or interesting about that.

It didn't bore me, like some other violent slashers have. But it trips over itself in a lot of areas in order to provide the audience with excessive blood and misery, and at a point, I had enough of that and didn't need anymore. Especially towards the end, the violence and misery just felt kind of exploitative and needless, while also really serving to rush through the already thin story that had been building.

The film portrays around the mid-point how these characters are going through legitimately traumatic events and how that's really negatively effecting their lives, and shows how the rubbernecking and gawking from outsiders just for the thrill and drama of it just leads to more distress and trauma for the victim. It then proceeds to make the audience the rubbernecker, lingering on scenes that have no plot significance, aren't that interesting from a physical effects perspective, and simply serve to make the audience and characters feel worse. I think it just serves to weaken the thematic core of the film to pace and shoot the film from the perspective of the villains, while portraying the story as if it were rooting for the protagonists. It felt like the film's sequence of events was composed by the True Crime podcaster the film wants you to hate, and it just led to a weird mismatch.

It's...certainly something, and I guess it has it's place. But I definitely agree that parts of this film feel very "Faces of Death"-y, and not in any kind of positive way that could be taken. There is some legitimate craft here, but a lot of it is very messy, and overall I think these films are just very much not my thing.

Finally got round to Smile 2. Really enjoyed it and think was better than Smile 2

As people have mentioned Naomi Scott nails the role and one of best performances in horror role in recent years. Film was creepy at points but still relies on the jump scares like the first one. I liked the demon/entity just having fun and seemingly being unstoppable rather than paint by numbers the good people beating the bad demon etc.

I enjoyed the ending too and really hope Smile 3 is on the cards as without spoiling could take to next level

one of the reasons they never made white chicks 2 was because they were worried about backlash or having any trouble, ( if I understand them correctly)
makes me wonder how they will handle a new scary movie, since the first two were so raunchy and outrageous

Eh, it's been long enough that there's dozens or new horror films/archetypes/tropes they could lampoon but I'm not sure if their comedic style would really gel with the modern landscape. It would be fun if they pivoted into a different style while still aiming to lambast modern horror movies.

This probably isn't the most ideal thread for this, but it's certainly related to horror movies and I wanted to bring it to everyone's attention!

If you're looking to grab some official Universal Monsters retro/throwback merchandise at insane markdowns, Menards (a home improvement store, of all things!) is offering Wolf Man and Frankenstein Monster masks from Super7 for $0.56 and $1.11, respectively (they're discontinued from Super7 directly, but when they were available there, they were $20). They're pretty cool display pieces!

They've also got discontinued Monsters pint glasses from Super7 at a couple of very reduced price points, as well (search for "Super7").

No, I don't work for Menards or Super7! I was just so knocked back by the cheap deals that I thought some other horror enthusiasts might want to take advantage as I did.

Note: I've purchased various things from Menards online in the past (particularly Halloween decorations) and have never had an issue with them.

I finished* my annual Halloween horrorthon and while I mostly stuck to one’s I’ve already seen, I did see quite a few new/new to me movies and my favorites were Oddity, Daddy’s Head, Threads and The Substance.

The Substance was my top favorite and deserves all of its praise & more, it was truly so much better than the hype even made it out to be. Oddity was really creepy with a very interesting story. Daddy’s Head was another super creepy one that really took me by surprise as I went into it totally blind. Threads I feel like I can’t in good conscience recommend due to it being one of the most disturbing films I’ve ever seen, but, it was a genuinely fascinating story that I never want to see again.

*currently watching Trick r Treat so not technically finished, but, finished with the new/new to me movies.

Played a fun 'game' with my wife on Halloween yesterday for our Wedding Anniversary Halloween Movie Marathon. I set up five categories with three movies in each and wrapped each title in some of the finest cheap Halloween decorations a Dollar Store could provide. My wife would pick a category and then pick an unknown title for each. We started right before it got dark here and had a fun time! Here's the categories, the title we picked, my ratings and the other two titles I had for each category!

Category 1: "Spooky Starters": Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein - 3/5 (Casper/Ernest Scared Stupid)
Category 2: "The Spirit of Halloween": Halloween 1978 - 4/5 (Pumpkinhead/Thirteen Ghosts)
Category 3: "My Obsession" - The Loved Ones - 4/5 (Misery/Dario Argento's Opera)
Category 4: "Acclaimed Horror" - The Strangers - 2.5/5 (Silence of the Lambs/The Neon Demon)
Category 5: "A Case of Madness" - Anguish 1987 - 3.5/5 (In the Mouth of Madness/Rosemary's Baby)

Overall it was a great, fun night! The Loved Ones was a first watch and really stole the night, if anyone hasn't seen it, I highly recommend. Truly a Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets My Super Sweet 16, it doesn't pull any punched on its demented ride and has some stellar performances. The Strangers was also a long awaited first time watch and I honestly didn't find it to live up to its hype. Greatly executed and it has some great performances as well but goodness do those two make some truly baffling 'horror movie character' decisions that frustrated me and took me right out of it. Anguish is also worth a shout out, it's a truly bonkers 80s' Spanish horror that feels like a fever dream, nightmare ASMR trip at certain points and features a twist that subverts its horror film archetype plot with something profoundly horrifying, especially when you view it through a more modern lens. It really is scary that something that seemed likely fantastical in nature in 1987 is very much a real world threat.

I watched 4 classic horror movies last night that I hadn't seen before: Dracula, The Invisible Man, Frankenstein, and Bride of Frankenstein. My favorite was The Invisible Man and my least favorite was Dracula
